Even back when DS was born they wanted the babies in the rooms, not in the nursery. But they didn't want the mom to SLEEP if the baby was in the room! So I would call for somebody to come get him, they would take FOREVER, and by the time they came to get him it would be time for him to eat or time for me to see the Dr. or a visitor would show up so I got NO sleep from the time I checked in for induction at 5 AM on a Tuesday until they discharged me at 1 PM on Thursday!
I know that they think rooming in is important, but it's also important for a new mom to get sleep. A tired, exhausted, cranky mom is much more susceptible to post partum depression. I had to get really stern with some of the staff when Jacob was born, as they wanted me to have him constantly. It helps that Alan is a giant, with a really fierce look when he wants. It actually came down to Alan taking Jacob to the nursery and insisting that they take him in so I could nap for a couple of hours.
With the twins, it wasn't so bad. They needed more monitoring in the nursery. Leslie had a really hard time waking up, and when she would eat, she would take one suck, and then fall asleep. Also, they both had jaundice, so were under the bili lights quite a bit. I got some sleep, but not as much as I wanted since everyone and their dog that we knew wanted to come see the babies!
