Pinks, Farmer's Market & Disney Soda Fountain

Just looking for some input & opinions on Pink's Hot Dogs, the Farmer's Market & the Disney Soda Fountain. We are planning on seeing all 3 on a Saturday at the end of July. Are there any tips to help make this a successful excursion??

We plan on hitting Pink's for an early lunch....walk around the Farmer's Market for a bit & then hit the Disney Soda Fountain for dessert. I read somewhere, that we might need a reservation for the soda fountain??? Just want to make sure we have our plans set before showing up.

We have twin 3 yr olds that are both autistic...so having to wait around for long periods of time with no movement would be hard on them.

Also, from what I could tell...all 3 are pretty close to each other. Please tell me if Google maps is bonkers on this!!

Ooooh...I didn't know you were going to be up in my neck of the woods!! I live right near the Farmers Market!!

I wish I had more time to reply right now, but I just took a quickie break from the work I am doing and I have to get back to work to finish it up.

The only thing that strikes me right off the bat is that all 3 of those places (all good choices, by the way!!) involve food. Unless you spread everything out through the day, from morning until evening, will everyone be able to eat that much?

I wouldn't want you all to go to the Farmers Market without sampling some of the wonderful food there is to be had there - even if you just stop at one of the bakeries and pick up some goodies to take with you. There is some good eatin' to be done there!! But you want to be able to squeeze in your hot dogs at Pink's (YUM - beware, though, the line for Pink's is always very long) and your visit to the Studio Store/Soda Fountain. Hmmm....maybe you can do breakfast at Farmers Market, walk around there a bit and then mosey over to The Grove (right next door to FM, and the American Girls store is right there too) for a while, then stop at Pink's for lunch and then up to the Studio Store to have dessert? Or, you could maybe end the day with dinner at FM or The Grove, and do Pinks and the Studio Store earlier in the day.

Farmers Market/The Grove is located at Third and Fairfax. Pink's is on La Brea and is close to Santa Monica and Melrose. The Studio Store/Soda Fountain is up on Hollywood Boulevard. So they are all reasonably close by car. I am just trying to think of what the best route would be to get from one to another that would make the most sense in terms of a dining schedule!!

LACMA and the Tar Pits are also up this way, right down the street, too.

for 3 year olds. I'm not saying not to do it though, just that forewarned is forearmed!

That's the area where I grew up in LA. Pinks can sometimes have a long line. Farmer's Market is now also the Grove -- my kids loved it at that age, especially the fountain. There are places there that might take up your time if your kids are interested (like the American Girl store) but even if it is crowded (which it will be on a Saturday in Julu), you'll be able to walk around because it's a big place.

Farmer's Market is south of Pinks and Disney Soda is on Hollywood Blvd. so North of Farmer's Market/Grove. That's why it will be a roundabout journey. Hollywood Blvd. is kind of grimy and will be crowded on a Saturday so be prepared. The parking structure on Hollywood and Highland is often a zoo.

To minimize driving, you might want to do something like Farmer/Market Grove in the morning, head up La Brea to Pinks for lunch, and then head up to Hollywood blvd. for dessert.

Have fun!

If you are looking for some open space and a really terrific place for kids, consider the Page Museum/La Brea Tar Pits. If it were me, I'd probably skip the Soda Fountain and the whole Hollywood blvd. thing with three year olds and consider the Page Museum. Or pop up to Hollywood blvd for another day, esp. since, as Sherry said, all of those places involve food anyway.

At the tar pits, tHere is space for them to run around, a really terrific museum of the Ice Age, and a huge tar pit! It has been a favorite of my kids since they were toddlers (they are 8 and 11 now).

Thank you both!! This does get me thinking......I never really thought of the Farmer's Market as eating....more or again, etc. etc. We really just thought it would be a fun place to look around & experience. But this does have me wondering if maybe we would plan this for dinner?? Does anyone know the hours they're opening during the summer on a Saturday?? We were planning on driving to the Santa Monica Pier to meet up with my brother after the Disney Soda Fountain and hadn't really planned anything for our dinner that night.

I understand the concerns about the Hollywood area...we planned a whole day in 2005 to see the Walk of Fame, and couldn't get out of there quick enough. Definitely was not what we had expected.

The Disney Soda Fountain is so we can see the El Capitan Theatre (which we somehow missed...or just didn't realize the significance to Disney) & of course....being the die-hard that I am....have to go see it!!!

On our way out of town after our trip, we're planning on driving by the Disney Studios......I know we can't get in, but would still like to take some pics & say I've been there!!

Because you can drive North on Highland Avenue (from the parking lot closest to the El Capitan) and get there to Burbank. It is probably less than 10 miles away and quicker than the freeway. Just throwing it out there because you could combine those outings -- go to the soda fountain and then head up Highland to the studios on your way out of town. You can Mapquest it for exact directions but it is very easy -- I used to do it when I worked in Burbank.

I wouldn't want you to go to Farmers Market without eating!! Too much good food to be had there, and simply wandering around there wouldn't be enough reason to go. I think FM still stays open later (but not too late) during the summer, but some of the vendors close. Since you are doing the Soda Fountain and Santa Monica Pier as well, I think FM for breakfast or dinner would have to be it. Of course, if you are at FM, I will have to come up and say hello!! I am literally right down the street from there. I can show you where my friends and I used to hang out and spy on the cute boys we liked in school when we were kids (they worked at the fruit stands, candy stores and things like that at FM!!)!!:rotfl2: These are my stomping grounds!!!

Hmmm...how could you work it?....Maybe FM for breakfast, take a peek at The Grove, head up to the Studio Store/Hollywood mid-day (and if you can work Pink's somewhere, do it; otherwise, skip it for this trip), then down to Santa Monica to catch a sunset and eat dinner there. Or you could do Hollywood early, then down to Santa Monica and then back to FM for dinner, but I don't like the sound of that as much. I think FM for breakfast, Studio Store for mid-day dessert and beach/Santa Monica for sunset/dinner sounds better!!

Oh....didn't know that....that actually sounds like a great idea!!! Thanx for the tip!

I really hope we DO get to meet up!!! When the plans get more set, I'll let you know.
The reason I keep avoiding the breakfast thing is because I will be disowned if my 21 yr old doesn't get his Krispy Kreme for breakfast & this was the only day it worked out.....I know, crazy huh?? :rolleyes1

I'm thinking the 2nd plan sounds more like what we will do. I just went to the Farmer's Market website......sounds like we might do dinner at Johnny Rocket's. We've heard good things about this place & we all love the old diner setting & foods!

We're debating if we really need to eat at Pinks that day. We will be at Knott's Berry Farm on Friday & they just got a Pink's there...so might eat at that one & drive by the other one to get pics before going to the Soda Fountain.

It sure looks like a lot of food that day....... but with 3 young adults & 2 growing kiddos....I'm sure they'll handle it just fine!! :lmao:

Well, it's going to be a lot of running around that you guys are doing, driving to and fro, from the Studios in Burbank to the beach in Santa Monica and points in between, and the traffic in this area is usually pretty thick. You are packing a lot into one day. If you were just doing a driving tour and not stopping more than once, it would be different. But you are doing a lot of driving and stopping at FM and Santa Monica and Hollywood, and then driving to Burbank, all of which will take time. You may find that you just can't do it all as the day progresses. It's really too bad you can't do FM for breakfast and leave the rest of the day for everything else, because it's going to be really hectic the other way, saving it for dinner, and some of the vendors do close at night at FM (others stay open, but a lot of them close). That Krispy Kreme is interfering with what could be a more seamless plan!!!

I actually would have suggested avoiding Johnny Rocket's for dinner at FM. Not that it's bad, but I would want you to get a full Farmers Market experience, and eat at one of the fantastic, counter service, mom & pop, family-run places that have been there for decades (or everyone in the family could get something from a different place, and then you all bring your trays back to the table) rather than Johnny Rocket's, but if that is what is going to please the family, I guess you have to do it that way! (Like, if anyone in the family likes New Orleans-type food, the Gumbo Pot is the way to go!! Plus, there is wonderful barbecue food, Italian, Mexican, Chinese, corned beef/roast beef, etc.)

Oh well, it will all come together one way or the other - but don't add anything else to that agenda for that day or you won't be able to squeeze it in anywhere!!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Ok I know no-one has posted on here since April but hpefully one of you is reading.

We are headed out that way in October for MR cruise on the Wonder. We figure if we are coming all that way though we wanna hit some of LA. We are going to AG in the Grove and letting the girls pick out a new doll, hitting farmers market, santa monica pier, and maybe pink's. I like your ideas of a gameplan. think we will save Santa Monica pier for sunset. Maybe hit AG, FM at 9am and then pink's for lunch(1-ish), then we wanna hit a few specific walk of fame stars, and maybe drive up and take pics of the studios. We wanna drive to a location to get a good view of the hollywood sign...any siggestions?????

If you go to the first page/first post of my Trip Report (link in my signature below), you will see the links to where of my Grove and Farmers Market photos begin. I took them over August and September of last year (I even added more after the ones I showed DizNee Luver). The reason I'm directing you to those is so you will see what exactly you have to expect from Farmers Market and The Grove, food-wise, shopping wise, and as far as anything else. That may help you establish how much time will be needed, and if it's something you want to devote more time to or less time to.

Honestly, I think that you won't have much time at The Grove or FM if you are planning on arriving there at 9 a.m. and then leaving for Pink's at 1 p.m. Truthfully, one of the very best reasons to visit Farmers Market is to eat the food - and I mean the authentic food from the small mom & pop vendors and the bake shops, not the places like Starbucks or Johnny Rockets that can be found anywhere. I think you're missing out if you skip the food there and eat somewhere else.

So I would either suggest skipping Pink's or going there much later in the day. Or if you can't miss Pink's, then take a look at my FM and Grove photos so you will know if there is anything there that absolultely cannot be missed so you can be sure to work that in to the time you're there.

Thanks for your pics....When I went to the pg 61 it wasn't the FM/Grove. They were DL pics. :confused3 Anyhow I found them and my girls are excited for the AG store. Also hoping the will see some stars. Ya know they are 7 and almost 11 so they are at those starstruck ages. Hmmm can someone tell the Disney show stars to come shopping that day!?!:rotfl2: I think you are right, if we can make it to Pink's Saturday before heading to the port then we will but I LOVE:love: Ma & Pa diners. So tell me the best place to eat. We like Oriental, good old american food, etc. I think we will definately need to get a funnel cake, not one with all the junk but just a regular one. We don't eat sweets like that so I don't wanna shock the girls systems with more stuff on top of it, the funnel cake will be enough shock:cool1: So maybe we will do the FM and Grove and then head to Santa Monica pier for dinner. Oh where can we go to see the Hollywood sign??? I think I just relaized we will need 3 days to do what we want before the cruise. One day we will go to FM/Grove/pier, one day morning at Knott's( we have passes to Cedar Point so we get in free--might as well just walk thru) then at 3/4pm to Mickey's Halloween party at DL , then Sat was gonna be relax at port hotel but I am thinking a little more hollywood/burbank area. Any chance the girls will have any hope seeing anyone?? By the studios, Grove, etc?

That's so odd! I just double checked, and, on my end, Page 61 is definitely the page on which the Farmers Market/Grove photos start in my TR. The August photos go from Page 61 - 63, and the September FM/Grove photos go from Page 65 - 66.

I'm using Explorer right now, and I'm on a PC. Which browser are you using? I wonder if the pages come up differently when you use a different browser. Or, maybe if you're using a Mac rather than a PC, it might change the pages slightly? Weird, huh? Anyway, thanks so much for telling me that you didn't see them on the page indicated - because that means others have probably had that same issue as well.

Normally I would just post direct links to the exact posts with photos or information, but since I had soooo many separate posts with photos for FM and The Grove, I figured I would just indicate the pages where they started.

You know, celebrities seem to go to The Grove and FM all the time, so I would not be shocked if you saw someone noteworthy. It would not be out of the realm of possibility. Literally, I think TMZ has photographers posted around The Grove to catch celebrities on camera. I've seen a couple of photographers sitting casually on benches with newspapers covering their strollers, or standing, with camera equipment sticking out of a stroller!:rotfl2: Sometimes they are like B-Level celebs that you might see, but occasionally you will see bigger names. They usually have sunglasses on and hope to not be noticed, but yet I always see them pop up on the TMZ TV show!

Hmmm...what is the best place to eat at FM.... Well, a lot of people are big on Magee's - they love the corned beef and roast beef and all that. There are a few Asian-themed places like Korean, Chinese and Japanese. Most of those are good. Patsy's Pizza is very good (they make other things besides pizza). There's a great French crepe place. Bryan's Pit BBQ is great. You'll see tons of stuff while walking around. Of coruse, needless to say, because it's a Farmers Market, the fresh fruit is amazing.

Make sure you look for the (very large) koi fish in the fountain pool at The Grove. For a while they took the koi fish out and just left the jumping fountain. But at some point they put some big ol' fish back in there - only a few, though (like 4) - and they usually all congregate over by rocks so they are easy to overlook.

I think heading to Santa Monica later in the day for dinner - hopefully for sunset - sounds great. If you can work Pink's in to the schedule somewhere, that will be good but the line is always very long there, so be ready for that.

There is a street that takes you a good part of the way to a vantage point to see the Hollywood sign, and I forget which street it is. You can't get too close to it anymore (not like the old days, when you could almost drive right up to the sign), but you can get a better spot to see it. I just have to remember which street it is that takes you up there.

Laurie (DizNee Luver) had a bonanza trip to L.A. and Anaheim last year, and they went to Hollywood Blvd., as well as to the Disney studios in Burbank. They also drove by Pink's. I'm sure she will eventually figure out that we've been posting on this thread and jump in to offer her thoughts on Hollywood and the studios in Burbank.

Funny thing is, I live probably 10-15 minutes down the street from Hollywood (I'm much closer to The Grove and FM), but I rarely go there often so I can't really say how long you'd need there. In the old days, I was in Hollywood all the time but so much has changed since then!

It's probably not a browser issue, it's probably a customization issue. Somewhere on the "User CP" page, you can customize how many posts show up on a page. The default is 15, and most people leave it at that. But if you change the number of posts in a page, then "page 61" will be different for you than for everyone else, because pages 1-60 will have more or fewer posts.

HTH,
Bob

Wow! That's news to me! Thanks, Bob. I never knew that - so I certainly never changed anything (at least not knowingly). Now you've got me curious - I will have to go in and check to see if it's defaulted to 15 on my User CP. It could be that it's also slightly different for the mods than for the regular, non-mod DIS'ers. I've noticed that there are some differences in the things available to me now and the set-up that I didn't have pre-mod days.

You learn something new every day - especially on this board!

I do prefer to link to the actual posts - which is much easier for people to get directly to the information/photos they need. I just couldn't bear to do that in this case when I knew I had 25+ posts with photos.

Thanks for all the info. I found the trip report of the other lady. You guys have helped me. I am getting so excited to come to LA and the girls are gonna love it!! Is it Sept 28th yet????

Mine is set to "Use Forum Default". I've never changed it, so presumably that's how it comes up unless you change it. From long experience using the boards, I know that "Forum Default" is 15 posts per page.

Sherry, I had no problem going to page 61 of your TR and finding the Grove/Farmers Market pictures. I'm guessing that both you and I have the default setting. I'm also guessing that ForTheLoveofDCL has customized it to something else. But those are all just guesses.

Bob---I had no idea I changed it, so I went back to the default setting and you were rt! I changed it and now I can find the pics for farmers market. thanks for posting this...man was I getting agrivated trying to find them!!! Thanks again

Glad it all worked out. :grouphug:

Being a computer geek payed off again  Now, if I had only taken that job at Microsoft back in 1981... :rotfl2: :sad1:
