Gaps in the bathroom

They completely removed the doors to the stalls in my high school since kids used to smoke in the stalls. They were still individual stalls so not exactly like that picture posted earlier but the doors were missing. We all managed to live.

A close friend of mine (male) was handling #2 in a target bathroom which had pretty large stall gaps. A "gentlemen" decided to try to press his "equipment" thru one of the gaps and flash my friend. My friend then proceeded to judo kick his junk and then held him (really just stood over him while he rolled around in pain) until security could come. One time when stall gaps were an issue. :magnify:

Wait! What?

I heard they did the same to the boys' bathrooms in my HS. The girls' rooms still had doors, yet there was probably just as much smoking in the girls' room as the boys'.

At my elementary school there were often no doors on the stalls because for some reason, the fun thing to do to kids was to wait until someone was in one then just flat kick the door open. I have no idea why. Boys, right? Anyway, eventually they just stopped fixing them and took them off.

Staff using the kids bathroom is a big no-no here!

I'm glad it's not for us. I would never be able to make it all the way down to the staff bathroom and back before my next class came (I am the Librarian, so I have a class every 50 minutes)

my high school did the same thing! (I graduated in 1985, and smoking in the bathroom and all outdoor places on campus was rampant)

My high school also removed the doors. This was 1986-1990.

My college did not have shower curtains or dividers of any sort in the communal shower. Just 3 shower heads on one wall and 3 on the opposite.

And it sounds like all of you survived, as I did, and managed to live into adulthood. Goes to show that a gap is stupid thing to worry about.

I don't get what removing stall doors do to stop smoking? Can't you see/smell smoke regardless of doors? It's not like staff could go in and watch everyone use the restroom with the doors off.... or did they? Bathroom door removal at schools would go with the things that wouldn't fly today thread. I just can't even imagine.

I'm kind of surprised at the overall nonchalance over large gaps in the bathrooms. Just because everyone else has bodily functions doesn't mean I want to take care of my personal hygiene within view of random strangers. But I've never been the type to use the restroom at home with friends or family members along for ride, and I know some people don't mind that at all. I guess we all have our own comfort levels.

Its not a big deal because unless you put your face right up against the gap, you aren't going to see anything that is going to provide any sort of a thrill.

Why are Europeans so wussy about bathroom stall doors? Don't they have nude beaches, and a lot more nudity on television than we do here in the US?

At my school a monitor stood in the entrance of the restroom in full view of the stalls between periods and all period for the 3 periods that had a lunch section. They were there for the sole reason of making sure no one smoked in the restrooms.

I assume with a door they couldn't prove which person was smoking. With no door they could see you.

Really, it was a non-issue. I have friends who teach at the same school now and there are still no doors.

Believe me, I'm not worried about giving anyone a thrill :scared: And FWIW I've been in some bathrooms where you can see everything quite clearly just glancing as you pass by. No need to get up close to the gap. Thankfully those are not the norm.

I hate using public bathrooms, and I really dislike the gap! Also, I always go to the stall that is as far away from the door as possible. I flush the toilet with my shoe so I don't have to touch the handle.

I live in Canada where the gaps are the same as the American style. They don’t really bother me that much because really no one wants to look except maybe a small child and even then that’s very rare. I usually choose the stall closest to the door because I find that one is usually the cleanest because most people bypass the first one.
