I love credit cards so much!

I don’t think we would qualify as “making that much money”...If my kids want to do something like that they’re welcome to take out loans and figure it out themselves beyond. My math is based on a moderately priced education ($30k-$45k in today’s money) which if my wife and I don’t need to support our own living expenses (since we technically could early retire) then we can just use our earnings for that year to pay for college and write a check.
I didn’t mean it to be snarky. I honestly think it’s a nice thing. My income is less than 40k, so I can’t pay that for college. A 4 year degree + 4 years med school at 40k is $320k, so even paying for half that is a great help.

With only one having one, we took a totally different approach to college funding than the 529 since we didn’t know what scholarships, aid, etc DS will get (we still have 5 3/4 years to go). We plan to sell our home which will be paid off, move someplace warm, ie wherever DS goes to school and downsize. DH plans to retire in 3 years and I’ll request to telework 100% or retire in 6 years. Between the equity in our house and savings, DS should be able to select wherever he wants to go and graduate with his PhD loan free. We may start a 529 now since you can use the funds for private school which DS will be starting in the fall.

As I sit here in my U of R hoodie... hilariously, law school there is cheaper than undergrad.

My daughter and I visited UVA, William and Mary, and Richmond. She crossed Richmond off her list for a very 17 yr. old reason. “Ma, I can’t go to any school that has a SPIDER as its mascot!” She’s terrified of spiders.

And to the poster upthread who mentioned that some schools will let the non-custodial patent slide on the CSS, we found that it would have been very difficult. A lot of the schools wanted affidavits from several people, like a pastor, principal, etc, stating that we did not know his whereabouts and he provided no financial support. We did know where he was, and he did pay child support (although not his share of college like he was supposed to). He just refused to do it because he didn’t want to pay. Sure, I could have dragged himm to court, but we had other things to deal with at the time. I suppose I still could, I guess. A few schools would have worked with us, but not many. I think Amherst would have, but she was waitlisted there, so a moot point anyhow. I think the crackdown on non-custodial parents is partly a consequence of so many parents who were capable of paying in the past, but just refused to. At least, that’s what one financial aid office told us. Sad for kids caught in the middle of it. Luckily, it worked out for us. Okay, I think I’m done being off topic.:offtopic: (Maybe.) :P

Thanks for the optimism...she got 3 Cs in her junior 2nd semester after her grandmother died and she was a mess. Just a mess. So I'm not holding out hope. I joke that 1.2 million take the PSAT, 50,000 are commended or higher, 15,000 are finalists so she has to be in the smallest percentage (the 1,000 that don't progress from SF to finalist). So she's the most special:rolleyes:.

And can I say how BRAVE you were to wade into College Confidential? Seriously, those folks are intense!

I do like that we can discuss things and stay friendly on this thread. Such a nice respite from the polarization of the outside world. :flower1:

I'm still going to hold out hope for you and your DD. Plus this means her SAT should be good since the 2 are so closely correlated. ;) Yeah, CC is scary, and I still venture over there, but it took a long time to figure out who was biased or just plain wrong and who is actually helpful. The real crazies show themselves pretty quickly. I found a brand new one just a couple of days ago and boy is she is nut.

I'll put out here that I did enough research that I have more info than I know what to do with, so if I can be of any help to anyone let me know. I'm not much help with the churning stuff since I'm not nearly as experienced as most on here.

No worries - I didn't take it that way. :-) I just like to carry forward the FIRE mantra that it doesn't take crazy six figure income to achieve financial independence :thumbsup2 One of the most common misconceptions about the FIRE movement is that it's only for people making $250k and such. While I will acknowledge that we have had a few fortunate events occur in the past 3-4 years, we were already well on our way towards FIRE (and still are) despite being a single-income household that has never had a six-figure salary figure :)

Ha! Too funny! If it makes any difference, our mascot looks so absurd it's actually funny.

They are still much more reasonable than the U of Chicago which is $75,000/yr
My ex boss was paying for his son to go to U of C. He actually bounced a few of my paychecks while trying to pay tuition and his employee.

That’s great. DH and I have always lived frugally (though maybe not FIRE frugal) with our only debt being mortgage and maybe a car payment. However unfortunate events (plus adopting DS, which was our best decision ever, though costly) deplete any gains we make. I often feel I’ll never be able to retire.

Calling Southwest experts.....

1. I have a res booked with points and Early bird attached. What is the process to change the reservation? How do I transfer the EB to the new res, or do I just cancel for a refund to the credit card and repurchase on new booking?

2. With the Priority cc can the $75 airline credit be used to buy a gift card, or only just for booking a flight?

3. Can a res be booked with BOTH cash and points?

Late seeing this so others may have helped
1- you can change the reservation online.or by calling .don’t cancel or you’ll lose the money you paid for EBCI
2- Haven’t bought one but think you can use it for a GC
3-no can’t combine points and cash

I just applied for the SW business card and got the "we're reviewing your application screen". I'm really hoping for a CP for 2019-2020. I am currently 3/24. I was denied for the Ink Business card in the spring and the letter I received made it seem like I had too much credit with Chase, I then lowered the limits on some of my cards.

I guess we'll see what happens. If I get denied for two cards in a year I'm not going to be a happy camper!

Did you try the automated status line? What’s it say :-)

Hahaha- you have a ways to come in churning! I’m post 5/24 but so far this year I have 2 BoA denials (both of which would have been shoe in approvals 6 months ago) and 2 Barclays denials (1, biz AA was a shoe in for most, A+ was a flyer and I knew it). I’ll prob hit 5 since I applied for the AA Biz a second time but I put spend on my 1 Barclays card ahead of my application this time & I am NOT going to call to discuss my app. Or answer a call from them. Nobody goes through each and every cc on your report quite like a Barclays rep...

@SouthFayetteFan our FIRE people could head on over to this DISchurners thing I’ve heard tale of if y’all want a FIRE discussion area without lighting the DIS on fire*

*couldn’t resist guys!

Though I do wonder if a FIRE thread was started if the kooks wouldn't eventually give up, leave id the thread moved fast enough. That's what has happened here, just not sure how fast a FIRE thread would move. We're lucky they haven't really been in this thread, have left quicky or just get scared away

AmEx offer for Viator (Sightseeing Tours & Activities) -

Get a one-time $30 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $150+ in one or more transactions online at viator.com by 2/4/2019

Edit: Oh and I can't remember if this was out before or it's new too but here's one for Busch Gardens Tampa -
Get a one-time $20 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $100+ in one or more transactions online at buschgardenstampa.com by 2/28/2019.

And speaking of AmEx, from the hate side of the relationship - added my employee card to my existing login and why do they ask you for all the same information that already exists in the login?? They wanted my email address and phone number, plus the DoB and SSN - I thought that was the whole point of having a user account already? Just use the same stuff that exists there, that's why I logged in. And now I have the same problem everyone else has where offers don't disappear even though they are already added to another card. I haven't had that problem with just my two cards on separate logins, when I add it to one it disappears from the other. But now that I added a card so that I have 2 on one login now I see all the offers I've already added. It let me add the FedEx 25% off shipping though, even though I know that's added on my SPG Biz. Unfortunately this means I'm maxed out at 100 offers already on the BBP and each offer I try to add tells me no, so I may have to make a list just to get rid of some.

From the love side of the relationship, despite Sam's Club not shipping the last item until after it was supposed to arrive and therefore didn't charge any cards until 12/6 - well after the expiration date of the amex offer - we both got the offer credits on our cards like we should have! So I guess having it pend before the expiration date works for Sam's Club .com at least... I think AmEx know how cruddy they are and built that into the offer.

DISchurners could work but I like the flow of the discussion here. And the little pictures make it feel more personal! Maybe we just need a nonchalant name ala “I love credit cards so much”.

:offtopic: College finances are such a tricky topic! I visited high schools to recruit for my univ because my univ paid me $50/school. Money I needed to travel with our MUN team! What broke my heart was kids coming to hear me talk and telling me their parents could NOT find out they came to hear me. College was off the table and a taboo topic. They came from poor enough families they would have qualified for ALL the aid- and had their parents just educated themselves they would have known that. It still breaks my heart the potential these kids in my hometown have, but their parents have drilled it into them even bringing up the topic of college will destroy their familial relationship.... As such I count as a win EVERY SINGLE PARENT HERE whose is willing to even talk to their kids about school. And the conversation “I can’t pay for any of it but I’ll do whatever else you need” is also a win because some kids are not even give that chance.

Is it hard to get a teaching job where you are? We are desperate for teachers in our district b/c it is high income and therefore hard to fill jobs.
Yeah we live in the same town as the college I went to which has a huge education program and I’m a tad picky on the schools I want. Luckily I can be since Dh has such a good job. Otherwise I would have to take anything. I usually stay pretty busy with subbing though. I actually like subbing because it’s so flexible. I get to be with different kids every day and I have to do 0 planning which means I can leave right when school gets out.

I totally agree about the value of that Hilton on the monorail loop.

The MiraCosta was definitely a pain to book. DH wants me to go for it again next year. He wants to watch Fantasmic from the room again. I told him I'd try.

I did. Here are the screen shots from Ashford Castle's own website (more expensive), Hotels dot com, Chase UR portal, and Amex travel portal. Only Ashford Castle's own website and the Amex travel portal give me the option to even book something less expensive than a junior stateroom. All are for checking in on 6/13 and out on 6/20.

It seems that Amex has different inventory than Chase.

That’s all you can do is try and book it and see what happens. After the stress of our wdw trip I like not having to plan anything ahead for Tokyo Disney. I am going to try to book dining ahead of time on the Japanese site but that’s it.

The cash rate for our Hilton room is $154/night. The normal king ocean view room is only $141. I wish wdw had those prices. I know it’s a Hilton but it’s still right there on the monorail loop
