The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: I don’t think I’ve ran with anything too far out of the norm and I don’t recall seeing anyone else. My husband did run to the store and back with a big thing of laundry detergent and some other groceries. He wore a backpack and does not recommend.

ATTQOTD: I don't think this beats the tuba guy but in the Philly Broad Street run many years ago a guy came bounding up to me just as a course photog was getting a pic of me. I turned around and realized I got photobombed by a guy in one of those inflatable clown suits that makes you look super-round. The race photographers never posted that picture but I would have loved to see the look on my face. How he ran 10 miles in that is beyond me.

That's a sousaphone. I've actually been looking for one to run with. Our Tuna Run relay team name is "I thought you said Tuba run" (it's a low ley race experience). I think Sousaphones are easier to run with given the way you wear them. So far all the ones I've found are several hundred $ and thats too much for a pun.

Is the run a local run? You might try asking the high school band director in your area if they'll let you borrow one. I played tuba from junior high through college and I've borrowed one to play in the Christmas events they do locally. I nearly ran part of the LA Marathon with one. My friend and I ran it in honor of our friend, who was one of the tuba players we went to college with. He'd died a few months earlier of cancer. At one point, several former band members were going to bring their instruments and play at the finish line as we crossed, but it never happened. They were going to bring a sousaphone and hand it to me as we made the final turn in Santa Monica. I could have done that stretch, but not sure about a whole marathon!

So I run a marathon and one stray thread in my shirt can cause chafing. Invisible things I didn't know existed cause chafing. How can you (or that guy) run in a hard, twenty pound thing (assuming it's fiberglass) that wraps around your body without massive bleeding at the finish?

Side QOTD: what would be the most annoying thing for someone else to be carrying while you are running. I'm thinking cymbals.

It would help that it's outside of the clothing. I'm trying to think if there's any part of it that would touch the skin. I would have been ok for a few tenths of a mile down Ocean Avenue to finish a marathon, but running a whole marathon or really even a half for me would be tough. Sousaphones are easier than the other tubas that they use in orchestras or drum corp because you do get the support on your shoulder. I did the Rose Parade with the drum corp tubas and my back was on fire by the finish from having to hold the whole tuba up on my shoulder. Of course the best part of that weekend for me was that we performed at Disneyland two nights earlier.

Not really holding but the strangest things were in 2016 - a lady running the Light Side 10k in high heels and during the inaugural 2015 Star Wars Half - people running in tandem as an AT-AT.
The Inaugural Star Wars Half in 2015 also featured people dressed in full jawa costumes and somebody, inexplicably, as Jabba thet Hutt. You couldn't see any part of them underneath those costumes. There's a reason why runDisney changed the costume rules after that race weekend.

I also saw people dressed as Mrs. Potts and Chip during the 2011 Disneyland Half. Usually pulled off to the side of the road trying to deal with the heat and those costume choices.

I understand why people want to run in costume. It's certainly fun, but please make sure that if your goal is to finish the race healthy and upright that you choose a costume that will safely allow you to do so.

I have seen several people run the WDW Marathon in a full Tigger costume. During the race one year it was nearing 80 degrees and this guy was still going. He stopped and took off the head at water stops, but other than that he kept the head on.

We have a local Christmas race where they have everyone pin jingle bells to their shoes. Although it is very festive and a great idea, I cannot stand repetitive noise so I've only ran it once because I can't handle the constant jingle throughout the run. No type of headphones can drown out the noise!

EEK, That sounds like it would be festive for exactly one minute but not more.

I was horrified by the guy at 2017 Avengers 10K dressed as Yondu with a stick down the back of his shirt (was it rocket on it? some other character) because it was a pain to carry.

My whining kids.
