The Vaccine Discussion Thread

Saw an interesting article about vaccines for children. Link

"Work on the trials is moving so quickly that Dr. Robert Frenck, director of the Gamble Vaccine Research Center at Cincinnati Children’s, believes it's "even a possibility that we'll see a vaccine (allowed for children) as low as age 5" by August or September. The vaccine could be approved for children as young as 2 by December or January...Frenck told reporters during a call Monday that the FDA may give an emergency use authorization (EUA) to give the Pfizer vaccine to children ages 12-15 as soon as the end of the month."

Gosh, I hope this is true! I'm sort of obsessed with watching for the Pfizer authorization for 12-15 since we have a Disney trip planned for the end of June and I would love my 15 year old to be fully vaccinated by then.

One of my docs enrolled his two boys in the Moderna trial for kids. He's pretty sure at least one of them actually got the vaccine. Most of the medical people I know feel like you and can't wait to get their kids vaccinated. I'm hoping that things move along quickly.

We pushed back our next cruise from November to next July in anticipation of 12+ being approved. Youngest DS, 11, will turn 12 in May '22. We've waited this long, might as well be 100% vaccinated. Hopefully his timing is right (I trust the minds at CCMC as I was a patient there years ago), though, as we do head to Cancun mid October. I'm happy to have one child vaccinated (13), but both would be amazing!

I thought this was a discussion about DCL not other cruiselines. DLC has a very different demographic than other cruise lines.
I feel that the covid procedures being taken by other lines, including vaccination requirements, are very relevant to this topic.
And the demographic is not that different - just more kids. They still need adults to take them on the ship and many parties are multi-generational.

I am not sure they are that different. Those are mass market cruise lines targeting families after all. I don’t think Norwegian is building go karts on their ships to entertain adults.
Yes but they don’t have Mickey Mouse. Let’s face Disney has a niche. Anyway I don’t see DCL leaving Florida.

Pfizer CEO is now officially talking about the boosters within 12 months.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/15/pfi...cine-dose-likely-needed-within-12-months.html
The highlights:
* A third dose or a booster will likely be needed in about 12 months
* Possibly an annual vaccination drive like that for the flu shots

If most of the general public in North America and Europe is vaccinated by this summer or early fall, it means the booster will have to be taken by summer or early fall 2022. I imagine this is in response to the ongoing data coming out against the variants.

It also means that full vaccination may no longer be sufficient for, say, cruises requiring them. You will need a timestamp of your vaccination too!

The production and supply of the vaccines is looking much better later in this year and all of the next. We will hopefully see the AZ and J&J vaccines either modified or in the clear by then. Plus, those currently in Phase 3 such as Novavax and GSK should also receive their approvals this year.

I think you may underestimate the desire for some people to get back on a ship. I think they would sell out at other departure ports in the short term. But I also think it all depends on the vaccine requirements they decide on.
Another issue is that flying to a foreign country to board a cruise would require passports. No everyone who cruises has a passport.

I just booked my appointment for my Pfizer shot. Hoping kids age 10 and up are approved by the Fall and 5 and up approved by December. No cruises booked, but I have a UO/IOA trip booked for Xmas and I know my DH will breathe much easier (no pun intended) about taking them to a theme park if they are vaccinated.

I think some people might be overestimating the desire to get back on a cruise ship. I think cruising has taken a big hit from this. It didn’t seem like there was any excitement over the 2022 release and prices haven’t really gone up.

I heard the opposite. I‘m almost certain I heard it on Cruise Radio News and from different bloggers and/or ambassadors. People are booking/postponing to 2022 and 2023.

Just google « record booking cruises 2022 » and you’ll see tons of articles about it.

Florida is far from the only state doing this.
South Carolina legislature is considering a law right now that if passed will ban employers from requiring the vaccine for employees. It already passed the state Senate I believe. The governor there also lashed out on Facebook last week at the idea of vaccine passports.
So now Texas, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina isn't going to allow vaccine passports. So you are quickly running out of ports in the South to depart from.

Not to mention the CDC continues to drag their feet.

Texas has a requirement that you can't use vaccine passports if you accept state money. DCL probably doesn't get money from the state of Texas. It won't affect most businesses. There is one private college here in Austin that gets money for scholarships from the state, so they are going to have to modify their requirement for vaccines for the fall semester. I believe Florida has the same stipulation, even though most articles never mention it.

That's been my general impression too. A lot of the DCL summer 2022 cruises are filling fast. I keep getting tons of stuff pushing the 2021 Celebrity Cruises. If you look for cruises on their site, you specifically have to dig around to find 2022. It makes sense that they would push 2021, but I think most people are hoping for 2022 now. We moved ours.

I agree 100%. There will be a little bit of demand in the short term, but not the long term. You got some die hards that can't wait to go back to the ships. But once they've had their fill, the demand will wane. A lot of the people booking is just making placeholders. The restrictions are going to be quite significant,. And I don't buy the idea that people are going to pay premium prices for that. What they are doing though is getting reservations booked for 2022 and 2023 and then will wait and see what the restrictions are going to be as it gets closer.

People are doing the same thing with Disney World. They are booking way out hoping the masks mandate is lowered by the time they go. If not, they simply postpone it.

Guilty as charged. ;)

We moved our "placeholder" November cruise this year to March. I kind of wish we'd gone for it, as we now know we'll be vaccinated so we wouldn't have been stressed in the end, but my husband is much happier as our replacement cruise stops in Tortola. This one they'll have to cancel out from under us to keep us away.

Disneys has never had success selling there San Juan cruises. We did it once it was an 8 hour flight for us. The ship was only 2/3 full and very few kids onboard.

The last couple of southerns I've been on from SJ have been totally full as far as staterooms go - they were getting more popular (and more expensive) as time went on. I'm not sure on number of kids but cruises in January will always have fewer due to school just starting back up from winter break no matter where they sail from.

No one is over-estimating. Cruise lines themselves are reporting higher booking and higher prices all around for next year and 2023.

Yes, long-term demand for anything travel-related will remain uncertain until the pandemic is over - but the desire to get back on the ships is through the roof.

Do you really think sailing from San Juan is DCLs bread and butter. They also offered huge discounts on those cruises to military, travel agents etc. I’ve sailed on a number of off-season cruises from PC and they were packed with kids. The Dream is their money maker.

I agree with you on cruising, but I‘m not sure the mask mandates are keeping people away from WDW. I think there would be more people here now if they could get park reservations. Park reservations are currently selling out weeks in advance.,

Yeah inflation is here there is no doubt about that, and it’s only going to worse. People have also gotten stimulus checks and yes there is a pent up demand to travel. Looking at the prices and all the deals out there on cruises I haven’t seen any evidence demand is through the roof.

They said the the same thing about people postponing until 2021.
