How do you preselect your table mates?

We are looking at a multi-generational trip to Alaska, probably 9 of us in 4 rooms. How can we be sure that we will be seated together in the dining room and at what point do we make that request?

We do the same thing. 13 of us in 4 rooms. With that many people we do fixed time dining.

If you used a travel agent they can make the necessary requests for you. If you booked on your own call up Royal and let them know.

We do this as well. As starvenger says, this only works with fixed time dining. If you are calling yourself, you will need each cabin's booking number and Royal will link them for you. If you used a TA, they should have all of the info needed.

As far as when, I usually do it right at booking, but then I am the one that handles all of the bookings for my family group. You can do it anytime after you have your booking numbers, but I would do it as soon as you can to ensure you can get one of the larger tables.

If you have My Time Dining, it gets trickier but it still can be done. You will need to make reservations for each night through the cruise planner, there is a place to add people from another reservation. You will still need their booking numbers and there is no guarantee that your preferred time/table size will be available.
