first time cruiser here! I was reading a Cruise Compass today and I read that I need to bring my Seapass AND photo ID every time I leave the ship when I go a port. I would prefer not to bring my passport with me....but I guess I will if I have to, does this sound accurate? Could I use a drivers license since that has a photo too? My son is too young for a drivers license, so I guess he would need to take his passport? Any advice is very much appreciated!

I usually leave my passport in my room safe and take my driver's license with my Seapass. ID for kids is not required if they are with you.

yes. the photo ID is to get onto the pier. the sea pass card is to get on to the (correct) ship. ID are only required for adults. (any kid young enough o not have an ID won't be allowed to leave /reboard the ship without an adult anyway)

We also made quality copies of our passport then laminated them (left original in cabin safe). We carried the kids with ours, plus ID and seapass. This way if we had any issues, we had all the document information we may need from our passports. If you should need emergency evac, you can't do that without passport. Also carry our health insurance & travel insurance info. Once we were doing water activity so I got the small waterproof container and folded it all up in there.

I keep photos of our passport information on my phone. Makes for easy access in case of emergency, or even when filling out check in information online (since we travel from Canada).

Agreed with others that a drivers license should suffice for adults.

For our closed loop cruise via Silhouette, we made copies of our driver licenses/passports and left them in the stateroom's safe (along with the physical passports). We only took our driver licenses and sea card (of course, cash/credit cards) when we left the ship.

I personally take my passport unless I'm on an island run by the cruiseline. But DLs work fine for this purpose.

We got the passport book and the passport card. It's easy to leave the book in the safe and keep the card with you in a wallet or purse.

We don't do cruise line excursions. It is a VERY small risk, but should you not make it back to the boat, having your passport make life a little easier. Honestly you NEVER know what is going to happen when you leave the ship. (injury, accident, illness, arrest...) The ID suggestion is less related to the ship and more related to what might happen ashore that might require you prove who you are. We also take copies and keep them in the safe.

There are some ports where they ask to see ID.

you can take a drivers license unless you are in a country that requires your passport. They'll let you know if you are. They usually don't ask for photo IDs from children but if you need a passport in that particular port, a child would need one also.
