China Trip report - Adults only May 2018

:flower: When people post on one of these forums about yearning to go to Disney but they can't afford it and what should they do, I always think to myself the first thing to do is to stop reading on here so they don't fuel their desire. That's the long way of saying, why am I reading about your amazing trip?!!?

I'm trying SO hard not to think about the China trip, and reading your report is doing nothing to dissuade me. Somehow I keep reading :sad2:

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an extensive report.

Yes! So true and made me chuckle. China is not even on my list, but looking at those terrific Great Wall pics made me want to go.

I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find great blog about the joys of tent camping . . . ;)

Really enjoying your report! We did this trip last October (a DIS exclusive, customized itinerary) and it was really fun!
We had our Welcome Dinner this evening and it seems like we have a fun group. Our guides Ralph and Daisy also seem like a lot of fun too.
Daisy was one of our guides (Christian the other) on our trip last year - the same one that @Cousin Orville was on. Tell her that Jeff & Val say Hi if you get a chance.

Our local guide is Bruce. He was great fun with an awesome sense of humor.
We also found Bruce to be a wonderful local guide. Seeing Hong Kong from way up high was really impressive.

We enjoyed Peking Duck at the 1949 Duck de Chine restaurant. The venue was lovely.
Glad you enjoyed the restaurant. It is quite beautiful. However, I think this is where I decided I really didn't care for Peking Duck. Not sure what I was expecting but it left me flat.
The Peninsula in Beijing looks gorgeous but sad that they aren’t doing rosewood anymore.
We loved the Rosewood. Absolutely beautiful hotel.
And the sky is blue in Beijing. It definitely was not when we were there.
We didn't get blue skies on our visit. The whole time we were in Beijing they told us it was fog. This was during the Chinese Communist Party convention and we were a bit restricted on some of the tours. Still, I couldn't believe how huge the Forbidden City is. Wow!

You’re welcome and I am glad you are enjoying it. There was a time we definitely could not afford a trip like this. Then, later in life, there was a time we thought we could not afford a trip like this and I know now that we were wrong about that. Then, there is now where we can, but we still employ methods to mitigate the costs. I’ve mentioned in this thread a few times that travel hacking is an amazing way to travel free or nearly free. There’s a nice group of travel hackers over in the Budget Board helping people do just that. We are on the “I love credit cards” thread. Anyone is welcome to come say Hi, tell everyone their travel goals and the rest of the group will walk you through the how to part.

If it weren’t for the travel hacking bloggers I wouldn’t even be on this trip. Best thing about bloggers is you can find anything from the joys of tent camping for free to luxury travel for free. Clearly, I have not been reading the Hostels and Couch surfing blogs but it’s cool that they are out there :-)

I will tell Daisy you said Hi! Thank you for following along with me!

I love the Terra Cotta warriors pix! Would love to see them in their original place. I have seen a couple that we’re on loan to a museum but seeing the whole of them would be amazing! Living vicariously for now! When I plan my China trip you’ll have to help me hack the airfares! :goodvibes

Hopping over from the I love credit card thread, love all the pictures!

It was pretty cool! We are off to the Li River today for a cruise to see the Gumdrop Mountains.

I will be happy to help you travel hack those flights! Just tag me when you are ready to start.

Today we took our cruise on the lovely Li River to see the Gumdrop Mountains. It was simply beautiful! The weather held up and we were able to enjoy the day.

This evening we had our white elephant exchange. It was great fun and we laughed until our sides hurt.

Too wiped out to share more at the moment but will be back with more updates as we go along.

Wow, just coming off of a river cruise those river pics are really speaking to me!

After we did the Danube, I discovered I loved river cruises. So of course, now I have the Rhine and Sienna on the ABD list!

My thoughts exactly!

This was one of my favorite days of any ABD. Just gorgeous. And I NEED that hat!

We would have had matching hats in that picture except for the fact he lost his somewhere in HKDL. I nearly lost mine on the Li River! It flew off my head while on the top deck and luckily another guest was able to snatch it before it was lost forever.

I just showed my DS your pictures. His response “How rich ARE these people? “
:rotfl2:

Aaawww! Tell him not rich but solidly middle class with a paid off mortgage and no kids to put through college so that gives us more to play with. We still work crazy hours 6-7 days a week though. Work hard then play hard. But just like his awesome mom @CyndiLouWho we couldn’t do all this cool stuff if it wasn’t for travel hacking :-)

Well, he saw the plane pics and made some assumptions. Lol. He knows traveling costs money and we use “coupons”and “points”and save our money to vacation.
