Random but please help...long movie for kids

I got stuck in traffic today and what should’ve been a two hour ride was a 3 1/2 hour ride. The kids are too young to know how to replay movies/TV shows. Is there a movie that you can recommend that is extremely long and is geared for kids so that when we are stuck in traffic I don’t have to figure out how to start a new movie in the middle of a drive.

They have the kids kindles I hang on the back of the seats. Do you happen to know if they have the play fast option on the amazon version of the shows?

Children under two are not supposed to have any screen time (interferes with brain development) and kids over two should be limited to two hours per day. How about books or colouring activities for the kids? Lots of talking passes the time too. Singing together. I could go on.

I have three kids too—my twins are older now, but I know car travel can be a bit harrowing at times. Screens are not the answer though.

i do not see the issue with children having a little bit of screen time. you don't know how OP's house rules; the children may be having minimal screen time at home.

a few hours of screen time just for one day is nothing to be concerned about.

Sometimes you just gotta go 'old school' & think "what did they do before there were movies in the back seat & they were stuck in traffic?" Since no one has ever died from this condition, I'm sure you can figure it out ;). Entertaining kids in a pinch has been happening for awhile now, there's way more creative ways than a 'longer movie'. But I digress... Back to the regularly scheduled talk of longer movies.

People shouldn't be so judge mental. If you have an Amazon device you should have access to Amazon Video. If you run a cartoon on there that has multiple episodes it will keep showing episodes even into a new season. You would have to have WiFi. We turn on our hot spot in order to get WiFi in the car.

She didn't ask for parenting advice! This is one adult in a vehicle with three small children in heavy traffic. I am sure that getting her children to the destination safely is her main objective and to do that her eyes and focus should be on the road. Seems like that is what she is trying to accomplish with the movie. If the kids were getting too much screen time I can assure you the 4 year old would have figured out how to play his own movies by now. I agree that the Disney DVDs with fast play are a good solution.

Bring on the perfect parent squad to shame us all! Seriously, in a perfect world, OP wouldn't have been stuck in traffic for 3 hours. A little screen time while in the car isn't hurting them. Kids whose parents are attentive and interact with them will not be harmed by a bit of TV. And the parent who isn't distracted by 3 restless kids in the backseat is far more likely to arrive at their destination safely.

OP, I usually do a fastplay enabled dvd, that way it will loops when it gets to the end. Does your kindle have a settings option to loop/restart when done? Or can you make a "playlist" that automatically goes to the next movie on the list?

Far from a perfect parent, I assure you. I never espouse to be the perfect parent. But, tv for BABIES? A four year old? For sure, but not babies.

I’m obviously in the minority here, but how did we get to the point where tv for babies is even thought of as an option to entertain them? They have no consciousness or desire for tv until we put it in their hands.

I figure it’s to pacifying kids, to keep them docile. Kids are neither, and it’s often uncomfortable and difficult, but that’s part of the deal with kids.

Anyway, I’ll bow out now, but I will say that it’s more than possible to keep babies and small children entertained on long car rides. The trick is to never give them tv as an option in a car. They are resourceful. They’ll figure it out.

Lawrence of Arabia. 4 hours
Star Trek: the Motion Picture 2.5 hours
The Green Mile 3 hours
Avatar 3 hours

Bonus - they'll be asleep by the time it's over LOL

Since none of my suggestions are actually kid-friendly, you could play, I Spy or Spot the Letter or any number of things that doesn't involve technology. ;) Kids are super observant and they will love to play these games if you show them how. I tend to turn on the radio and share different styles of music with my DD. Also if you live near airspace, you can get a lot of enjoyment out of watching the airplanes coming in/out.

No need to drain device batteries or put more stress on your car's alternator using an adapter to power all this electronic stuff!

What stimulating, developmental activity do you propose OP provide for her children while she's driving by herself in a stressful traffic situation? What could she possibly be doing to build their brains while unexpectedly stuck in traffic and trying not to be a distracted driver? You are making big leaps from a few hours of tv in the car to using it as a pacifier.
