Do reallocated points go into holding if under 30 days?

I have a Sept VGC reservation made with 2020 points (Sept UY). I also have a back up reservation for Jan, which I made first, and it’s using banked 2019 points. Assuming DL reopens before Sept, I will cancel Jan. I’d like to wait until right before the Sept check in, just in case the resort closes again. But if I do so, will the now freed up 2020 points (originally attached to the Sept reservation) go into holding? Basically do I need to do the cancel/reallocating before the 30 days? Thanks!

Currently, DVC is following a modified rule under which there is no holding penalty if the reservation is cancelled 30 days or fewer before arrival. Nevertheless, DVC could change that rule at any time, meaning, for example, at 31 days before your arrival it might still be in effect, but by the next morning DVC could change it and you would have no recourse and be stuck in holding if the reservation is cancelled. In essence, you should assume that a decision to keep the reservatiion beyond 31 days out comes with a risk of having those points ending up in holding.

What I am not sure of is what happens in your situation even if the points go into holding. Will you then be able to put them in the Jan reservation and take out other points at 60 days out (the holding reservation rule) from the Jan reservation. In other words, can holding points be used at 60 days out to replace points already in another reservation. For that one, to be safe, you would likely need to get an official response from DVC.

If they go back to normal rules by that time then yes, the points would go into holding if you wait that long.

No, not unless the reservation is still available to book at 60 days out. Otherwise, there is no point to putting them in holding status. and most resorts, but expecially Califonria, that is very unlikely.

They said they would cancel the Jan stay.

But no, you can't keep 2 reservations and reallocate the points directly between them.

Yes if Sept happens, we will cancel January. Thank you! We have a spring or summer trip planned too I could use those points for, I was just trying not to use them towards the end of the UY if I could help it.
