SO my shorts finally arrived, so wanted to share my Disneybounding for August 17th party. Gonna be hot, so went with tank, and I like to add bows to the backs of my racers at Disney. :)
We are doing Avengers. I will follow with my kids. :)

(Sorry Starlord is so large, couldnt figure how to resize him...) I took out the giant pic, lol

DS6 Dr Strange. His cape is very light weight and I will probably cut it to tshirt length. DD16 is Loki, she is just wearing a green or dark gray tank.
DS14 is wearing Spiderman tee.

Thought these might help those trying to figure ideas for the heat. Easy, not too hot, still "dressing up". :)
I like those a lot!

Now we're talking!!! As soon as I saw the colors I knew who the character was! Fantastic job putting all the costumes together! LOVE them and the movies!

My sons want to go as Jack Skellington (age 5) and Oogie Boogie (age 4). I have basic sewing skills, and a sewing machine, but feel intimidated about making their costumes. For Oogie Boogie, I was thinking of making a sort of long hooded poncho and adding details like eyes-- I wanted to make it out of basic brown linen, but my son wants it to glow in the dark, so I thought maybe green glow in the dark fabric. As for Jack, I saw some costumes on Etsy, but the one I want would be around $50.

My primary concern is that the costumes be comfortable so they can go on rides and otherwise move around easily. I would really appreciate any suggestions or advice about making these. Thank so much!

When are you going? It can be quite hot in August, September and parts of October. If the poncho is an added layer of clothing I would ditch this all together. Instead I would rally around a white, short sleeve hooded t-shirt and add the details to the hood. It's fairly simple to make a hood from another white T-shirt. I haven't used glow in the dark fabric spry paint but it can be found at JoAnns:

I would buy 100% cotton fabric, wash it in warm water, hang dry then spray the fabric outdoor. You can achieve two looks: a flat paint job or marble it by squishing the fabric here & there.

Not sure for Jack, can you add a link to I can take a look see.:flower3:

We're going to the October 4 party. I hadn't considered that a poncho might be too warm. I wanted something thin, similar to the linen hooded towel seen here:

The hooded t-shirt is a great idea! And I didn't even know fabric spray paint existed. I'm going to give it a go and see how it turns out.

As for Jack, here's my ideal costume:

He wants a striped jacket and pants, but considering heat, I'm not quite sure what to do.

PS I hope I'm doing these links correctly and that I can post them here. Just let me know if I need to post an actual picture.

Every layer you wear has the potential to insulate your body creating you feel hotter. When thinking of wearing a costume you need to design it based on the weather and include the availability to add another layer underneath if needed. I typically make my costumes one - two sizes larger that way it can be worn next year as well.

Before buying your fabric read the directions on the spray can, if it calls for specific fabric then you'd need to get that. I used fabric spray on a wool felt hat, the can said cotton. It took a very long time to get this to work but eventually the wool submitted. Wool repels moisture.

If you're interested in purchasing the Jack costume I really recommend looking here: Post #156

I added a lot of links to various costume sites that offer an additional discount when you sign up. Some of the costumes are on sale too and these sign up coupons can often be stacked. Make sure you pick sites that are found in your area. If you need to return the item you can avoid the return shipping fees by returning it directly to the store.

Your links worked perfectly! I did a quick google search and found this:
https://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-Jack-Skellington-Costume

It is a great alternative and in viewing others it seems this is how many made their Jack costume - hand painting white stripes on black pieces of clothing.

Makeup (which my son would never wear):
