2017 Tink Bib Thief Article

I like the marathon investigation guy, but I would probably notify the race director before bringing in a 3rd party or telling other people. Give them a chance to investigate and handle the issue first.

He said he intentionally waited until after the 10k started to post this article, mostly so Patty wouldn't see it before starting her run:

I am posting this article at the start of the 10k race. Race officials are aware that Patty has been identified as the runner wearing the stolen bib. I waited to post this article because I did not want Patty to know that she was identified before the 10k race. I wanted her to run this as she normally would. I wanted to give race officials the chance to question her after the race. It remains to be seen if they do so.

The guy who runs marathon investigation usually waits until he has sufficient evidence before posting anything online. There are times a skipped mat may have been a glitch, and he just lets it swing by. He'll also ask the runners and race officials for their sides of the story, also. If a runner goes "yeah, my fault, I messed up." he usually lets the race officials handle it, and lets it go. It's those times when runners double down after getting caught is when he'll post something.

In the case of Patty, this isn't her first time getting caught stealing a bib. I wonder if there's someone at the pick up tables at the Disney Land races that's helping her with this.

Per local news, she was immediately cited with improper use of a disabled placard which requires an appearance in front of a judge. No other charges were filed, but I'm sure RunDisney/Disney wants to do their due diligence to make sure everything is covered before going forward with the more serious stuff.
Because OF COURSE she was illegally parked in a handicap spot... :rolleyes2 Come on, lady.

Latest article...not a ton of updates but it does have the video: https://www.marathoninvestigation.c...t-detained-at-disneyland-10k-finish-line.html

I'll bet she stopped on the way to the race and bought 13 bottles of Gatorade in the 12 or less express lane too.

Interesting that they wait until she collects the medal to arrest her. I'll bet that was on purpose to make it 'more' of a crime.

@Ariel484, thanks for posting the video.

I think they had to wait until the finish because it was the only way they could know for sure where she was. It's not easy to find someone at the start in the midst of 10,000 people. If you see her splits from the timing mats, you start to get a good idea of where on the course she is and can then pinpoint her location as she finishes.

so I have a question. there is this disney/universal youtube personality that I follow. She/he did a race a year ago and a video of it showing the number. When I checked that number for the race result I saw it matched the approximate time (to like 10 seconds) of what this person mentioned was their time in the video...but the name did NOT match this person - completely opposite sex. From the video, it was hard to actually see the name on the bib, but the letters were very close to this persons name - but I couldn't tell exactly. Furthermore, the curious thing is that she/he did a video of going to the expo and picking up shirts/bib - didn't actually see the part of the pickup, just the after showing the shirts.

So, I like this youtube channel but it kind of annoyed me that the name did not match the actual person for the clearly visible number. I just can't believe they would actually cheat - but it is suspicious. What do you suggest I do...should I reach out to the marathon investigations dude...it's been like 1+ years for the race. If anyone is interested, and wants to confirm that I'm not missing something, you can PM me and I'll give you the info.

Let him know.

Derek doesn't just jump the gun. He does just what you're saying to do, and he knows how to do it.

Wow, so that's exciting. I'm glad this is being taken care of because I can't imagine how upsetting it would be as a runner to have this woman steal your bib. It would really ruin the magic even after Disney set things right for you.

I cannot imagine the sinking feeling after flipping through the sign-in book and seeing a signature by your bib number.

In addition to that, now you have to trek to race relations, explain your case, and prove you are who you say you are. What a hassle!

I'm still amazed that this could happen. How did the bib thief bypass the ID check? Did the runDisney worker not check ID? Both times??? I'm surprised if that is the case but the other two scenarios - the thief has a RunDisney accompice or the thief created fake IDs- seems far-fetched to me...way too much effort for such small stakes.

This whole thing boggles my mind...especially to the point where she actually ran IN COSTUME during the Tink! Surely she enjoys Disney and the runDisney magic. What is going on in her mind to a) find it enjoyable to dress-up and run a Disney race but b) only if she can steal a bib to get on the course?

This happened again for the Disneyland Half 5K. My friend and I went to pick up our bibs, and my friend saw a signature on her line and said "I hope you didn't give my bib away...." Yes, her bib was stolen. They pulled the waiver, and someone had printed it and signed it. runDisney fixed the situation, and then did follow thru and detained the thief after the 10K (she had a legit bib for that) and she has been banned from all runDisney events, and from all Disney properties. When Anaheim PD escorted her off property, she was parked illegally with a handicap placard that was not hers. She claims she bought the bib from someone online. It amazes me that she has "bought" so many stolen bibs..... The lies will continue.

I cannot believe the gall of some people.

That excuse never really made any sense to me. There are certainly people who sell their bibs online despite it being against rD's policy but a seller would have to go to expo in person to pick up the bib before selling it or send the person buying it and hope rD doesn't check IDs (which doesn't seem like it would be a successful tactic in general). Either way, the person who bought the bib wouldn't then show up at the expo to pick it up. I can't think of any way that the buying it online story makes sense but it doesn't really matter from a ban standpoint since it's against rD policy. I would like to see her charged with identity theft or something because she did swindle $$$ out of Disney and if Disney hadn't been accommodating to the individuals who legitimately purchased the bib by giving them replacement bibs it would have been an even bigger firestorm.

Agreed, but they seem to have located her and shadow her until she actually takes the medal.

Having a Google law degree (also a Google medical degree), I'm wondering if this isn't it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_pretenses

"The obtaining of property by intentionally misrepresenting a past or existing fact."

Maybe she had to grab the medal to fit this part: "obtaining of property".

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. She got busted and I hope ends up feeling some pain/shame for her transgression.

I don't think that's it. I think they were just escorting her on the way out and minimizing the fuss. By all accounts she was running on a legitimately purchased bib in her own name yesterday (except for the banned from the event portion). So taking the medal had nothing to do with it. The theft charge was for the 5k bib from the previous day.

I thought it was interesting that they took the 10K medal since it seems like she actually DID do that race legally (bought the bib, completed the race).

Ahh, did not pickup on the fact she was legit at that race. So yep, probably just minimizing fuss.

I thought it was interesting that they took the 10K medal..

But then there's this.

None of it really matters. She got busted.

Have a great Labor Day Everyone!

Stealing is a sickness for some... many people get highs from it. Maybe this is her thing... shame.

So glad she got busted - she needs to know it's not okay, and the rest of us need to know that Disney takes this seriously.

I'm thinking the same thing. Especially since she'd steal the bib and then post on social media about it. Just crazy!

It could have been just so that she didn't try and use it as a weapon or something?

This is very true. I imagine that's probably the case here. If it was just about not being able to afford it she wouldn't have bought the Double Dare bib legitimately.

They checked IDs...but my ID now has a different last name than what I registered under. I didn't get a second look. Now, the first name is the same (although its a shorter version of my full name) and of course the birthday matches, but I expected them at least to look twice.

I was not asked for a photo ID when I picked up my Half bib on Friday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. My friend was with me and our bib numbers were sequential. I can't remember if they asked her for ID, but they definitely did not ask me. Maybe they were distracted that there were two of us with sequentially numbered bibs? I did sign the line by my name.

I've always had my ID checked at the various Disneyland races, but it sounds like plenty of people haven't - however, it seems tough to believe you can rely on getting someone who isn't checking ID! I wonder if she had several bib numbers/names/waivers that were spread out, so she could give it a shot at one line, and then if they tried to check ID and wouldn't budge with an "Oh no, I forgot it, but I have my waiver!", she could claim she had to go back and get it, then try a different line.

I'm also wondering if maybe being legitimately registered for the Challenge may have helped her in ripping off her victim for the 5k - pick up those actually-purchased bibs first, then come over to the 5k line and it makes it seem like someone ID'd you at some point. Or play the "Oh, I forgot it, but over there they were willing to check me in with just my waiver, you can do the same, right?" card.

I really hope runDisney takes the message from this situation and has a hard line on requiring IDs.
