9 days of gluttony! A (no longer) *LIVE* dining report 8/31 - 9/8 ***COMPLETE 2/28, Lunch at The Plaza***

Dinner at Skipper's Canteen was great! We arrived at 6:35 for our 6:40 reservation. We only had to wait long enough for the hostess to walk up to retrieve us. Our table was located in the far corner of the mess, and while it was very comfortable and quiet, the lighting was terrible for taking pictures. So I apologize in advance for the quality of the following photos. I had to use flash (and I hate using flash in restaurants).

Our server arrived and took our drink order: iced tea with lemon for me, hot tea for Eric. We already knew what appetizers we wanted to order, so we went ahead and got those going right away, too.

I selected the Falls Family Falafel - as I always do when we eat here. This dish has changed a bit since the last time I was here, but it was just as tasty. A secret recipe of Chicpeas, garlic, onion, lemon juice, and herbs; served with house made edamame hummus and toasted pumpkin seeds.

523882

Yum, yum, and yum!! I love good falafel and this one was really good. Crispy on the outside and dense but fluffy on the inside. Really nicely seasoned. The edamame hummus brought a nice creaminess, while the toasted pumpkin seeds delivered a nice crunch. Very successful appetizer!

Eric was in a 'porky' mood tonight, so he ordered Orinoco Ida's Cachapas - house made corn pancakes, beer-braised pork, roasted corn, Fresno pepper salsa, and avocado crema.

523884

You'll notice that nowhere in the description does it say, "Your appetizer will come out covered in a deceptively large amount of micro-cilantro". They did. We both find cilantro to taste like dish soap, so this was an unwelcome surprise. Once we had picked all of it off, these little Cachapas were fantastic! The pork was tender and delicious, the salsa had a little heat to it, the avocado crema was smooth, and the corn cake itself was strong enough to hold it all together. I didn't personally care for the roasted corn, I found it a bit overcooked - but DH liked it.

Sticking true to my carnivorous nature, I chose to order Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak. Adobo-seasoned New York Strip, vegetable and chorizo farofa, caramelized onion puree, and red wine reduction.

523888

Sorry for the terrible picture... I took about 30 different shots, but they just kept getting worse and worse. This steak tasted MUCH better than it looks! Everything was nicely seasoned, and the steak was perfectly medium rare. The farofa had a bit of sweetness to it that I couldn't figure out what it was, but it worked well with the rest of the components.

Eric ordered the "Hardy Har Char" Siu Pork. Char-siu marinated pork served with seasonal vegetables and Jasmine rice.

523889

He liked this, but didn't love it. I had a bite and had to agree. There was nothing wrong with it, per say, I just think he wasn't in the mood for the almost sightly burnt flavor of char Siu. I'm pretty sure he really wanted steak, as he thoroughly enjoyed the bites I shared with him. As you can kind of see, the seasonal vegetable was a huge stalk of bok choy. There is rice hidden under the mountain of pork. Overall, this was good, not great. While we were eating, Eric mentioned, "I don't love this, but there's something about it that makes me want to keep eating it" - and keep eating he did, until all of the pork and rice were gone.

At some point during the meal, he ordered a Kungaloosh beer (sorry, no pic... but it looked like a glass of beer 😉). He took a sip and didn't care for it, so it sat untouched.

For dessert, I let Eric pick something for us to share. He decided on the Coconut Bar with Pineapple-Basil Compote and Vanilla Cream - vanilla chiffon cake with coconut and lime white chocolate ganache.

523890

This was really good, and light. The cake was moist and not too sweet. I usually find white chocolate to be too sweet, but this was nicely balanced. My favorite part of the dish was actually the little white merengues that are scattered about. I could have eaten a plate of just those!

We paid our bill and made our way out to a closed Magic Kingdom.

523892

There were still several photo pass photographers around, so we took some pictures and slowly made our way out. A short monorail ride later, and we're back at the Poly, ready to call it an early night!

Our next planned meal is Brunch at Homecomin' tomorrow!

I'm sorry to hear about Tonys. With so many bad reviews you'd think they would do something about the food quality. I'm excited to hear about Skippers. We make our ADR'S tomorrow and I'm planning on booking it.
We've actually adjusted some of our planned ADR's based on your reviews

Good luck with your ADRs! I really hope I haven't steered you wrong at all and you guys enjoy your meals! 😊

Undercooked meatballs?! The very idea of spaghetti & meatballs shouldn’t allow for that! What a bummer. in many visits Tony’s has never been in our radar and it looks like off the radar it shall remain.

I just have to tell you I'm loving this report and you are eating at a lot of places I'm planning on trying! I have Homecomin' brunch on the list as well. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through your trip!

They were very undercooked - like completely raw in the middle. It was really disappointing, but we've officially learned our lesson about Tony's.

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying my report! 😊

Have never tried Skippers...the food looks really good! Maybe will add this on for March 2021 planning.

Skipper's is my favorite TS in Magic Kingdom. Hubby prefers Liberty Tree, but since they are not offering an a la carte menu right now, I vetoed LTT.

The meal I was most looking forward to, Homecomin' Brunch... and how the heat got the best of me.

We checked in for our 12:30 brunch reservation at 12:20. It took nearly half an hour to be called for our table. Did I mention that today was HOT? I don't think I did... well, today was HOT. We stood outside for those 30 minutes in the blazing heat. By the time we made it to our table, we were both sweaty and gross. Our server arrived with glasses of ice water that were greatly appreciated. He went over the menu with us and left us for a few minutes while we decided.

I chose to start with a Southern Mary - Dixie Black Pepper Vodka, Whiskey Willy’s Bloody Mary Mix with pecan-smoked bacon, fried green tomato, pimento cheese-stuffed olives and seasoned salt rim. Our server asked if I wanted it to be really spicy or just kind of spicy. I was really feeling the heat, so I chose just kind of spicy.

524121

This beauty arrived and it was perfectly spicy and refreshing. I really loved the fried green tomato, bacon, and olive topper. I drank it a little too eagerly, though, and very soon I was feeling unwell. Sadly, I had to pass on any further drinks even though there were several on the menu that I wanted to try.

Eric chose Sweet Tea Shine - Sweet tea, fresh-squeezed lemon and moonshine. Our server offered him the choice between a regular 16oz glass, or a 22oz reusable bottle. If you bring the bottle back with you in the future, you get a discount on refilling it. Of course, Eric chose the bottle.

524124

I had a sip and it was great. Basically sweet tea with a kick. DH enjoyed it as well.

Time for appetizers. Since the first time I saw the menu, I knew that I wanted to order Thigh High Chicken Biscuits - Three biscuits topped with Chef Art's famous fried chicken thighs and bread and butter pickles. Drizzled with hot honey.

524130

This was like a plate full of Southern Love. The chicken was tender and juicy, biscuits were warm, cheesy, and fresh and the hot honey provided a delightful sweetness that tied it all together. The pile of bread and butter pickles in the center was a great touch of freshness for an otherwise heavy dish.

We had originally planned to share just the chicken biscuits, but Eric swerved at the last second and also ordered the Biscuits - Cheddar cheese drop biscuits served with choice of blackberry fig jam or sawmill gravy.

524133

This came with FIVE large biscuits and sides of jam and sawmill gravy. I had two bites of biscuit, one with jam and one with gravy. They were both delicious, but SO HEAVY. Eric loved everything about these biscuits, and somehow managed to eat 3 (plus half of the Chicken Biscuits).

I was still feeling the effects of the heat and my bloody Mary, so at this point, I really should have just stopped. That would have made a lot of sense. But I didn't. I ordered the brunch version of Chicken and donuts with bacon as my side.

524134

Two large pieces of fantastic fried chicken, two sugar donuts, and 4 pieces of pecan smoked bacon. I ate one bite of each item before I gave up. My head was pounding and I was feeling nauseous. The bites I had were really great though! The chicken was moist and flavorful - probably the best fried chicken I've ever had. The donuts weren't particularly special, but they were good. The bacon was wonderfully smokey and perfectly cooked. If I had felt better, I would have LOVED this dish. (I had it boxed up to bring back to the resort for dinner later).

Eric went with the Hush Puppy Benedict - Chef Art’s spin on the classic, with house-made hush puppy cakes topped with fried chicken tenders, poached eggs, griddled country ham and pimento hollandaise. He chose macaroni and cheese for his side.

524136

With the exception of the Hush Puppy cakes, he really enjoyed his meal. The Hush puppies were very dry and somewhat hard to eat - I took a small nibble and didn't care for them either. I didn't try the rest of his food. Wait, that's not true, he convinced me to try the Mac and cheese. It was really good, but just too much for me today. DH said it was the best Mac and cheese that he's ever had, and he has had a lot!

You guys are probably going to think I'm crazy, but one of the main reasons I've wanted to eat here was to try Hummingbird Cake. So we ordered one to go. It comes with ice cream, so our server offered to bring that in a dish if we wanted it. Somehow Eric wanted and was able to eat it. He said it was great vanilla ice cream. I didn't get a picture. And I forgot to take a picture of the Hummingbird Cake until we were back at the resort and Eric had snuck a few bites.

524137

I still haven't tried it, but DH said it was fantastic. His words, "great banana flavor and cream cheese frosting, how could you go wrong?" Sadly, I'm still not feeling well, but I look forward to trying it soon!

We settled our bill and made our way back to the resort. After falling asleep on the bus, I desperately needed to lay down in the cool, dark, room. Thankfully this was a planned non-parks day, so we didn't have to miss anything.

524138

The heat definitely got the best of me today, but I still really enjoyed Homecomin'. We will absolutely be back, hopefully at a cooler time of year next time.

Our next scheduled meal is dinner at Via Napoli tomorrow. We're hoping to do some Food and Wine snacking during the day.

Aww! I'm so sorry you weren't feeling well. We have brunch at Homecomin' scheduled too! I think I'm just going to end up copying most of the places you ate, lol.
I'm excited to eat there for brunch. We've eaten lunch there and I fell in love with it. I hope you get a chance to eat some of the cake. It's amazing

Everything at Homecoming looks great but yeah, that is a lot of heavy food especially if you're not feeling well. Hope you're doing better today and enjoying Food & Wine. I love Via Napoli!

I am loving this review! You’re such a warm and engaging writer and I really do feel like I’m on holiday with you guys! I hope you start feeling better - the heat always gets the better of me in Florida! All the best!

Thanks! Thankfully, I feel quite a bit better today. I managed to snack a bit (not nearly as much as I had planned - lol), and enjoy Via Napoli. No cake yet, was too full from dinner. Maybe that'll be my breakfast tomorrow!

So sorry to hear the heat took its toll on you. Hope you're cooled off and rested and ready to go tomorrow.

Thanks so much! I did feel a lot better today!

Thank you! I think I learned my lesson about eating such heavy food when I'm overheated. Thankfully, I felt well enough to eat today!

Thank you so much for the compliment! That's really sweet of you to say! I did feel much better today, thankfully! 😊

Loving the reviews and they are really getting me psyched for my trip this weekend. Most of these have been places I've never eaten or haven't been to in years. Maybe we need some more ADRs for next week.

Somewhere earlier there had been a question of whether you can use the AP discount at Joffrey's. You definitely can - 10% off non-alcoholic stuff. My brother needs espresso every morning and the cheaper price, shorter lines, and AP discount make Joffrey's a no brainer compared to Starbucks.

Sorry! The last few days kind of flew by and I didn't manage to keep up with live reviews. We're on our way back to the airport right now, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish up my reviews by the end of the weekend.

Thanks for sticking around with me! ❤️

You're probably wondering whether or not we actually made it to Biergarten for lunch after that ridiculously gluttonous breakfast... well wonder no more!

View attachment 523151

We checked in for lunch at 3:00 and after just a few minutes, we were escorted into the cool dark pleasantness that is Biergarten. We were seated in the second tier, over to the right of the stage. As soon as we were seated, our server appeared with delicious pretzel bread, butter, and mustard.

View attachment 523185

For drinks, Eric chose to have the German Beer Flight. I'll try to remember to post a picture of the detail card when I get it from him. He said he liked the dark one and the grapefruit one (sorry, I'm not really a beer person, so I'm not much of a reviewer for this one).

View attachment 523156

I had iced tea again, but I also ordered a half liter Schofferhofer. So refreshing and delicious! I don't know how they manage to take two things I don't care for, beer and grapefruit, and turn them into the perfect drink for a summer afternoon in EPCOT. Pure magic!

Trays of food started coming out, fast and furious. First was the cold salad selection. We had Beets, Pasta Salad, Cucumber Tomato vinegar salad, and potato salad. Eric loved the beets, and I loved the cucumber salad. It had a good zing to it!

View attachment 523158

Next was the hot food tray. I'm not really sure what specifically was on it, but it was a ton of food! There was schnitzel, meatballs, spaetzle, roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, two kinds of sausage, and sauerkraut. Everything was pretty good. The schnitzel was on the dry side, but decent. The sausages were plump and delicious, especially against the briney sauerkraut. The chicken was nicely seasoned, as were the potatoes. I think I was probably just too full from breakfast to fully enjoy this food.

Fun fact, my husband is 1/4 German, so he was celebrating his roots. 🤣

Along with the platter of food, we received a plate with some sort of noodles, hot dogs, and the best green beans ever. Seriously, those green beans were perfect - garlicy and salty and well cooked. They were literally the only item we managed to finish.

View attachment 523177

Our server cleared away the plates and returned with dessert. One was apple strudel, and the other had Bavarian Cheesecake topped with mixed berries, a Black Forest Roll Cake, and the oh so German: Chocolate chip cookies. We did what any self respecting gluttons would do.. we ate as much of it as we possibly could. My favorite was the cheesecake - creamy and delicious. Eric preferred the strudel. The cake and cookies were also good, but again, I think I was just too full to appreciate them fully.

We settled the check and headed back out into the September heat. With extremely full bellies, we decided to head toward the front of the park for an afternoon break at the Polynesian, our new home for the next 8 days.

We're scheduled to have dinner at one of our favorites this evening, Rose and Crown... but I honestly don't know if we're going to make it.
We ate at Biergarten on 8/29 and those green beans were soooo delicious!!

Terrific report so far. Following along.

I just read another report that featured Homecomin'. I'm make a ressie for our next trip (whenever that will be!). Fortunate to have spent the last decade or so in DC and had many AMAZING meals at Art & Soul - Chef Art's restaurant on Capitol Hill.

Looking forward to the rest! :)

Loving your report, you have been to several spots that we have ADRs for in October. I'm glad you posted that photo of the fish and chips at Rose & Crown, it will help me convince my husband to SHARE...it is always a challenge.

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your meals!
