Arizona and Utah ABD activities

We just received the handbook for our September ABD for Arizona and Utah. There is a lot more “on your own time” than I have experienced with other ABDs. They recommend pre-booking activities before the trip. Any suggestions on where we should pre-book? We are not spa or horseback riding or shopping people, so no need to plan for any of that.

Also, they recommend arriving early to get lunch at noon the first day, but we are flying in the day before and so we will arrive outside the secure area. Any suggestion for lunch?

TIA!

Did they give you a meeting place at the airport for the first day/transfer to Sedona? When I did the trip (albeit many years ago) we met at a Starbucks outside the secure area, and there was a food court right there. (I came in 2 days early, spent time in Phoenix, then went back to the airport for the pickup.)

This is what it says: Once inside the baggage claim area, please look for a representative holding an orange-colored Adventures by Disney sign. This representative is available to assist you with your luggage and will escort you to the group meeting point in Terminal 4, between doors 4 and 6. We ask you to arrive by 12:00 P.M. to ensure enough time to grab lunch at one of the many fine-dining or quick-service restaurants in Terminal 4, as this will be your last opportunity to eat a meal before dinner that evening.

What days do you have free time? The resorts usually have plenty of things to do, or you can do some local hikes if none of them interest you. Based on the website, it looks like the stuff you might want to book ahead are spa treatments in Sedona and spa, horseback riding, or guided rock climbing sessions at Red Cliffs Lodge. Everything else looks like you can just get there.

The Phoenix Airport terminal 4 has plenty of restaurants landside, including the starbucks near baggage claim and a food court two levels above that. However my suggestion would be eating a nice big brunch before heading to the airport and getting a snack at Starbucks.

We just did this trip in mid-June. As others have said, your meeting spot at the airport is right in front of a Starbuck's. If you want to eat something in the airport, I would recommend getting there on the early side - 11:15/11:30 am - while they want everyone there by noon, once everyone has arrived, they will want to head out and start the drive to Sedona. We ate a large breakfast and just snacked on the bus on the way up (they have snacks on the bus, we brought some and they also stop to see some cactus at a big rest stop area that has a convenience store that will have snacks to purchase). If you want an actual meal, though, prior to leaving the airport, I would just get there early so you can head up to the food court.

There was a lot of on your own time in the Grand Canyon and Moab, but there are also a lot of early mornings so we appreciated having some time to rest and just spend time with our own family (we didn't book anything extra on the tour but you can book horseback riding and ATVs I think. There is a ton to do at the resort in Sedona (a pool, tennis courts, cornhole, etc.). In the Grand Canyon, you can hike down into the Canyon on your own or there is a really great paved path that takes you along the rim right outside your hotel. There isn't a ton of downtime at Goulding's Lodge and at Red Cliffs, there is a pool and a movie museum. I, personally, just enjoyed sitting on our resort patios/balconies and reading a book and enjoying the scenery. It's an absolutely gorgeous part of the US.

The part about meeting inside baggage claim is for if you are arriving on the day of the first day of the ABD. I don't believe ABD books pre-days for this trip, because of the mass transfer from the airport to Sedona the first day. Have you told ABD you are arriving early so they don't have a representative waiting for you? You'll skip that part. When you go back to the airport the next day (first day of the ABD) just proceed directly to the group meeting point in Terminal 4 between doors 4 and 6 by 12:00pm. This is outside the secure area. (Confirm with ABD, but this has previously been the location of a large Starbucks in Terminal 4). You can eat before you get to the airport, or, as @Marthasor said, just arrive quite a bit early in order to eat at the food court near the Starbucks. Then proceed to the Starbucks.

I ate at the food court, so I don't have anything outside the airport to recommend.

Yes, they have our information so they know we are arriving a day early. Our flight experiences lately have been prone to delays, so we aren't willing to risk flying in the morning when we depart at noon.

Thank you so much for your help!

You're welcome, and I totally agree with your strategy to NOT arrive day of! Too risky and too much stress!

Another quick qsustain, do we need hiking boots? They seem really heavy to pack and then wear in the desert.

In my opinion, if you are planning to do the hike to Delicate Arch then I would say Yes. The ground in the area you'll be hiking through is called slick rock, and it's for a good reason. I was *really* glad I had my hiking boots. Plus, I would never have attempted to actually get to the base of Delicate Arch (along the rim of a gorgeous basin) if I hadn't had them on.

Other than that, I still wore my boots a lot, but you could *probably* get by with really good tennis shoes if they have good traction.

I wore Merrell closed toe hiking sandals the whole trip and had no issues including the hike to Delicate Arch. My son wore hiking sneakers. Unless you plan on doing major hiking in the Canyon on your free time, I don’t think boots are necessary.

I wore regular running sneakers for all activities other than rafting, but I made sure the soles had good traction (meaning not worn out).

Hey there! We’re on a September departure for this trip as well (Sept 13). Maybe we’ll see you there? :)

We are currently on a southwest trip (on our own) and I have been so happy with my new Keen Newport H2s. I bought them for kayaking in Lake Powell but ended up using them for a lot of places (including hiking the Narrows in Zion). Traction was also fantastic on the rocks for our pink Jeep tour. I only used hiking boots a couple of times when the ground was muddy (we were here when the hurricane came through) but otherwise have lived in my keens.

Not to hijack the tread, but for those who use AbD as a starting point for itinerary suggestions, here are a couple of takeaways from our travels:
1. Sedona was a fantastic way to kick off the trip. Weather didn't cooperate to allow us to go hot air ballooning, but the Broken Arrow Pink Jeep Tour was terrific and Enchantment really lived up to its name. I wish we had more time there so that I could have gone to the spa. We ate way too much at the Cowboy Club and my son is still talking about it.
2. Mixed feelings about Monument Valley. On the one hand it feels really far/out of the way so I don't know if I would ever want to return. But some of our best experiences were there (Navajo Spirit Tour and Wildwest Trailrides). Also one of the best meals we had on the entire trip was at Amigo Cafe in Kayenta (near Monument Valley). I'm ridiculously hard to please when it comes to Mexican food and the pumpkin mole was the best I have ever tasted. Gouldings was the low point in our trip accommodation-wise though. If there is a next time we'd try The View.
3. Lake Powell was a last minute addition and I'm so glad we did it. We ended up doing an Antelope Island kayak tour which (because it was just us) ended up being about 20 minutes of kayaking each way and 2+ hours of cliff jumping and exploring an island. Perfect way to break up the trip. We used Lake Powell Adventure Co, who were totally fine (and we would use them again if we were in Lake Powell) but not outstanding like the Monument Valley guides were.
4. Bad weather heading into the Grand Canyon North Rim, so our "rim view" rooms ended up being white clouds. I think that vs. expectations it was the biggest disappointment through no fault of its own. We would definitely consider going back, and I'm very VERY glad we chose the North Rim vs. the South (due to crowds and eventually the view once the storm passed the next day). FWIW Jacob Lake Inn's restaurant/cookies/ice cream are totally overrated.
5. Bryce - loved staying in the lodge, loved the hike, and the night sky was out of this world. I had debated canceling to try to extend our time in the Grand Canyon but was ultimately so glad I didn't.
6. Zion - we switched from in the park to out of the park reservations at Desert Pearl, and the river side suite was fantastic. Hiking the Narrows is no joke - I should have insisted on getting hiking poles for everyone but was told by the hikers in my family that we didn't need them. Still, it was a great way to end the "national parks" part of the trip.
7. Las Vegas - definitely a mixed experience. We paid for a very nice suite at Skylofts but were ultimately kind of underwhelmed, and I don't think I'd want to stay here again. But the Michael Jackson One show (Cirque du Soliel) and Mat Franco (magician) were awesome, so we may very well come back to Vegas someday to see Beatles Love or O.
8. Disneyland - heading to the Grand Californian tomorrow. I anticipate a long drive ahead but after the insanity of Vegas we cannot wait to be "home."

Looking back there is very little I would have changed about the trip. All in all it has been a fantastic experience for my family. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out.

Yes, we are on the Sept 13 departure! Me, my husband, my sister, and our adult son.
Awesome, we’ll see you in just a couple of weeks then! My husband and I are traveling together. We don’t have far to go luckily, we’re just coming from northern Colorado.

Not sure what the normal group size is, but ABD said we have 32 adults on our tour departing September 13.
