Asia Disney Parks closed due to Coronavirus (SHDL, HKDL, TDL)

I’ve been following the UK situation closely.... I personally think the UK is going to be in big trouble very soon. Friends who live there think it’s going to be another Italy based on how they’ve handled everything so far. They are very very worried.
I thought another really scary part of the PC was when they said that people won't need to report mild cases and that basically only those who will end up in hospital will be tested. This way they won't really know how many cases they will have. I thought my big issue was going to DW in May but by the sounds I will have bigger issues staying in UK 😅

This is the advice
You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after seven days contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.

Wow I have just watched the UK press conference and I'm terrified! What do you think of their approach? The bit where he says they want to build some community immunity was really what shook me!

The approach is basically.... "Let's see what happens if we do nothing"

Meanwhile Trump says the reason he hasn't blocked travel from the UK is because of our strong handling of it all!

Are you in the UK? I'm really worried, they re treating us like Guinea pigs. I think I will stop sending my kids to school anyway, 95%of parents work in the hospital nearby.

Yep in the UK.

I think following today's 7day self isolate news (what use is 7days!!?) you can in theory just keep them off school anyway

Taking supplements will provide nothing more than a placebo effect for the majority of people and, in the case of Vitamin D, can be harmful if too much is taken, as it's a fat soluble vitamin. People who are truly Vit D deficient could benefit from a supplement but those people are likely already supplementing. If you have normal vitamin D levels, a supplement won't do anything to help you here.

Zinc and Vitamin C are water soluble so you can't really overdose, but there is no scientific proof that these supplements do anything for this or any other virus when taken orally. Zinc has some proven therapeutic efficacy WHEN COMBINED WITH ANTIVIRAL meds, but not as a standalone therapy.

Elderberry has some proven efficacy against INFLUENZA, but not coronaviruses.

The rest of your advice is good, and would be great if people followed it.

However, the supplementing isn't going to do anything other than make your urine more valuable and your wallet lighter.
You are grossly misinformed. Vitamin D is harmful in mega doses but most people should be supplementing with 4000IUs per day especially this time of year as in the northern hemisphere from October to April we cannot make Vitamin D as the sun isn't high enough for the UVB rays to penetrate the atmosphere. So almost everyone is deficient in Vitamin D.

I hate when people say that there is no research. Go to PubMed and look this stuff up. There is a TON of research on this. This type of misinformation is harmful to people.

I prefer to trust actual medical journals, the contents of which have been confirmed by the many medical professionals we have worked with over the last 10 years. These are of course, just a few of the available studies. Again, none of the suggestions I made, are curative, and I wasn't suggesting them as such. However, they are shown in medical journals and peer reviewed studies, to be beneficial in supporting a healthy immune system. Further - not once did I use the word supplement, merely to increase your intake. This is always best done through food, supplements should be a last resource.
GREAT JOB!!! You are so correct on this!

From some stuff I am reading it appears that many Europeans are pretty pissed off right now at their governments' response/lack of response to this virus. Asking why they haven't been doing what the Americans are doing. That sort of surprised me. Is that kind of feeling widespread or was I just reading a snapshot of small minority?

I think it was probably just UK, Germany and France. Although now Germany and France are taking action whereas the UK....
Although I'm not sure I would look up toAmerica as a point of reference given the small quantity of testing it has been done...

I agree, but I think that's going to change. In the last week, the CDC & FDA has lightened up their restrictions on both labs & indications for testing, allowing more people to be tested.

Today, Trump has added to that an array of private companies such as Roche to provide tests and Walmart to allot space for drive-through testing, with Google designing a website to help people diagnose themselves and direct themselves to the nearest testing center. It's really pretty innovative. I've always been a fan of public/private partnerships so I think now things will really move.

In addition, he's waved a bunch of regulations so doctors and hospitals can do as they see fit. Since healthcare is the most highly regulated industry in the US (along with nuclear energy) this is really going to help. For instance, one hospital wanted ill people to wait in their cars away from other people, until the staff could see them, but that wasn't allowed. Now it will be. Better for everyone.

And the best thing about that is our concern has been "the system" getting overwhelmed. By bringing in extra companies and entities we are expanding "the system" without having to build new stuff. So with the drive-thru testing at wal-marts and places we keep the people who just need tests out of the hospitals and doctors offices and pull them into a new network releaving strain on the main healthcare system.

I had always been thinking along the lines that our healthcare capacity was simply what it is. You are not going to build new hospitals, etc. in a few weeks but this actually is a way to give us more capacity along with the new lighting of rules giving doctors the ability to use any part of the hospital or whatever other spaces they think they need which before some regulations prevented.

It really was a good way to address it all.

I'm not sure that testing in Walmart's (or any other retailer's) parking lot is a good idea. I can see people running into the store to grab a few things since they are already there. I'm worried that this will increase the spread!

That sure would be a possibility! Although can anyone really just run into that store and grab a few things? It's like going on an expedition, it wears me out. I have to come home and rest. :crazy2: Maybe a sick person wouldn't be up to the task!

Although the headline is unnecessarily alarming, here's a great article on why they have to do these things like shut down Disney, the schools, etc. :

I ran a few of the rules they specifically called out by my DH who is an internist. He's going to have to take care of many of these patients (unlike moi). For instance, waiving Medicare's 3-day hospitalization rule before transferring someone to a nursing facility. This rule has been the bane of his existence for as long as I can remember. He told me that would make a huge difference, both in safety for the elderly patient (decrease risk of exposure to #COVID19) and in freeing up hospital beds.

Who knew? Little stuff like this can go a long way. We may have a lot more capacity than we think we do. Allowing the local doctors and hospitals to use their resources in a way that's best for their communities is a tremendous and under-appreciated step in the right direction. Rules and regs screwed up our testing capacity- they seem to not want to make that mistake again with inpatient capacity.
