Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

I call them shiny.

::yes:: That works.

Ooooh, nice!! That sounds like a lovely visit!

It really was!
And... after being on the road,
a nice home cooked meal
was just the ticket. :)

...woah.

...WOAH.

Correct.

I've thoroughly enjoyed another delightful recap of another one of your many interesting trips

Thanks!

(even if I've been a lack-lustre commenter these busy days!)

That's just it.
You've been busy!
You're forgiven.

Thanks so much for taking the time and making the effort to present it to us in such an entertaining and complete way.

Thanks for reading
and following along!

Always a pleasure to join in on your trip reports....and I'm looking forward to the next one whenever it begins!

Aww... glad you liked it.
No idea when/if the next one will be.

I remember this so cool to see a follow up on what their doing with them.

I had met Liesa
(@Steppesister )
previously
Yay Liesa @Steppesister I have a girl crush on her (LOL)........maybe sounds better if I say fan girl I am married after all.

The above plane, that exact plane,
has been flown by every single
Gemini, Mercury and Apollo astronaut.
You may recognize the names
Gus Grissom, or Alan Shepard.
John Glenn or Neil Armstrong.
They all flew this plane.

That's history right there folks.
And frankly, it gave me goosebumps
just being in its presence.
Now that is awesome history.

What do you call a group
of corvettes?
So this reminds me of a story from work this week. I was telling my boss about a group of design drawings for glass models of marine invertebrates we have in our collection - I said "and then I saw this cluster of snails" and she (jokingly) asked - "oh, is that what you call a group of snails? A cluster?" :rotfl2:

This is AMAZING! And of course as a museum gal (and one who is taking a museum studies course this semester), I'm so fascinated by the way the museum situated these vettes - how FUN!!! I wanna go to the soda shop!

Back in 2014,
a sinkhole opened
up in this room
and swallowed
eight corvettes.
:scared1: I don't even have words!

Right in Bowling Green, down an
unassuming road, lies a very small
aviation park.
How cool! You'll never guess where I'm off to in about half hour... I'm heading to interview the executive director of the National Soaring Museum for a class assignment. The museum is located in Elmira, NY (just a stone's throw from Corning - too bad you won't have time!) which is known as the "Soaring Capital of America". At the outbreak of WWII, Elmira was designated as the first site to develop a glider program and train pilots for the war effort.

You may recognize the names
Gus Grissom, or Alan Shepard.
John Glenn or Neil Armstrong.
They all flew this plane.
Wow! Amazing.

The cook began to call out:
"Dinner! For all in tents and porpoises."
Ya know, I've always wondered where that phrase comes from. Thanks for that! :rotfl:

Hope you enjoyed reading it
as much as I enjoyed writing about it. :)
I sure did! Always do :goodvibes

Did you see it in this chapter?
Oh, you probably did.
Did you see two of them?
Yeah, you might have.
But something tells me you
didn't see all three of them.
Three?! Three?! Your faith in me is overestimated. Something should tell you I didn't spot one of them :rotfl2:

Aww... glad you liked it.
No idea when/if the next one will be.

Taking a break is completely acceptable and sometimes necessary. But I do hope that eventually there will be another instalment of the Canadian Buffoon's adventures down the road. ::yes::

I was so excited to read this installment. Love all the photos - I was surprised to read that you spent hours there. How long should one plan for a thorough....but not too long of a visit? (hubs may get bored...not sure).

Right now, if we had room in the garage (and surplus $$), I'd like a grey '82. As we near retirement, we hope to buy some land and build a home (not to small/big) - with a 4-6 bay garage...if not more.

Marvin having a tough time picking one? Not sure we should feel safe with him trying to get in the sky. didn't see the third.

Thanks for sharing your adventures. Will certainly read along if you write another. If not, I'll still get a kick out of your comments on other tr's.

Just finished the last 2 posts. I never realized Grand Ole Opry was so big either. My mom and dad went there on their anniversary once, but that was YEARS AND YEARS ago. Think I was maybe 7 or 8....I don't remember much of their musings about it.
That little park was a find in Bowling Green.
This Dale Chihuly glass sculpture
immediately caught my eye.
I love glass sculpture.
And Chihuly is one of the best at it.
I have actually seen some of his art when I went to Atlantis. Here, I'll share what I saw... (These are not my pictures, I borrowed them from the interwebs! I have pictures, but they are the ole click and have developed crappy pics. These are much better!)

The one following was my favorite:

I actually got a book with a bunch of his glass sculptures when I was there. His work is just phenomenal!

Bowled Over

The morning found me
in Bowling Green
and the National Corvette Museum.
I can say that because
it says so on the building
that I photographed.

DSC04805_zpscj6logjh.jpg

See?

DSC04843_zpssv0zojpa.jpg

Either that, or it was an
elaborate prank.

Possible...

Improbable.

I walked in and was
immediately smacked
in the face with a passel
of corvettes.

DSC04808_zpsne7wom5p.jpg

Hmmm... murder of crows...
parliament of owls...
smack of jellyfish...
prickle of porcupines...
(a personal favourite of mine)

What do you call a group
of corvettes?
A roar of corvettes?
A blur?
A zip?

Nevertheless, my curiosity
got the better of me
and my money
leapt out of my wallet
and into the eager
grubby hands of the
pimple faced tad at
the cash.

Money well spent.

I passed the next few hours
drooling over fast cars.

Well... they looked fast.
They certainly didn't move
overly much.

They did move once,
a few years back...
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Personally not a corvette aficionado, but on the other hand if they offered to give me one, I wouldn't argue.

Or at least it was mostly
filled with wonder.

Back in 2014,
a sinkhole opened
up in this room
and swallowed
eight corvettes.

sinkhole_zpsztm822yv.gif

There's a marked area
on the floor which indicates
where the sinkhole was located.
They've been repairing
the cars ever since.

That kinda sucks, but as you said looks like it was a hidden blessing for them.

If memory serves,
they won't fix all of them.

I could be wrong.
You may be right, you may be crazy, but it just may be a long road trip you're looking for.

I had met Liesa
(@Steppesister )
previously when I
was on my father/daughter
trip and visiting Alison
(@franandaj ) in California.
She had put out
an invitation to one
and all for dinner
at her parents' house and...

How could I say no to that?
(I've since re-met her in
Disneyland on a return
engagement with Alison.
And even met her again
with @cinderkelly at a
MVMCP.
That makes her the DISer
I've met the most,
although that will change
this fall when I revisit Nebo
and Smidgy.)

I had told Liesa when I would
be passing through
and the times coincided
so I said I'd drop by.

I arrived at her parents' house
and said my hellos.
Her folks turned out to be
really nice people
and I had a very nice visit.
Liesa made a lasagne and
a caprese salad.

Boy that was good!

Sorry, total DIS TR fail.
Not a single photo.
I'm jealous. I'm going to miss Liesa by a couple days.

This Phantom F-4 that was
under wraps and under
restoration.
It was the reason I was here.
Love the F-4.
When I found out there was
one here, that sealed the deal
and I knew I was going to take
a peek.
Unfortunately, since it was covered
in a temporary hangar,
a peek is all I could get.

DSC04850_zpsu2g5njm3.jpg
When we get together, remind me you tell you about my F4 experience (literally)

Now...
The last aircraft just... blew me away.
On the surface, it's not that big a deal.
The T-38 Talon is a trainer aircraft.
It will never be used in combat.

However.
This aircraft type
was the world's first supersonic trainer.
And as such, it was useful
as an astronaut trainer
and chase plane for Nasa.

Way too cool!
I think I might need to plan a trip to Bowling Green.

I still had about thirteen hundred
miles to go, but...
Isn't that considered a small jaunt for you?

Did you see it in this chapter?
Oh, you probably did.
Did you see two of them?
Yeah, you might have.
But something tells me you
didn't see all three of them.
To be honest, I was enjoying the narrative so much, didn't even look. Will have to go back.
Edit: Yes, I found all three. First time for everything I guess.

So.... of course I had
to Google it.

Escargatoire, Rout, Walk of snails.

I want to use that some day.

"Oh, yes. The other day, I was
on my way home when I
happened to come across an
escargatoire of snails."

:scared1: I don't even have words!

Wasn't a good thing.
Except... it kinda was?

I'll even let you ask me
about it in person. ;)

learn new things on my TRs.

I sure did! Always do :goodvibes

Thanks! :)

Oh... I dunno about that.

You might want to look
at that photo you quoted.

:lmao:

I was so excited to read this installment.

Oh? Why? :)

Love all the photos - I was surprised to read that you spent hours there. How long should one plan for a thorough....but not too long of a visit? (hubs may get bored...not sure).

Thorough? Um... hours.
But.. I spent maybe...
2 - 3 hours?
I didn't take many notes
that day.
I think I slept in a bit,
visited, then went back
to the hotel to rest
before going over to
Liesa's parents'.

I guess it looks like
I spent eight hours there,
but that wasn't the case.

Right now, if we had room in the garage (and surplus $$), I'd like a grey '82.

Interesting.
Mind telling me why
that particular model
and colour?

As we near retirement, we hope to buy some land and build a home (not to small/big) - with a 4-6 bay garage...if not more.

4-6 bays?
Do you have a few vehicles
already?

Marvin having a tough time picking one? Not sure we should feel safe with him trying to get in the sky. didn't see the third.

two out of three ain't bad.

Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Will certainly read along if you write another. If not, I'll still get a kick out of your comments on other tr's.

Aww... shucks. Thanks! :)

Just finished the last 2 posts.

You poor thing!
Reading both those at once.
Do you feel nauseous?

I never realized Grand Ole Opry was so big either.

I know, right?
I had no clue!

I just kept walking...
and walking...

and walking...

My mom and dad went there on their anniversary once, but that was YEARS AND YEARS ago. Think I was maybe 7 or 8....I don't remember much of their musings about it.

I wonder if it was the same size then?
I have no idea when this was built.

That little park was a find in Bowling Green.

It really was!
I sure was lucky
that Liesa's Dad
mentioned it.

I have actually seen some of his art when I went to Atlantis. Here, I'll share what I saw... (These are not my pictures, I borrowed them from the interwebs! I have pictures, but they are the ole click and have developed crappy pics. These are much better!)

Personally not a corvette aficionado, but on the other hand if they offered to give me one, I wouldn't argue.

You could do worse!

That kinda sucks, but as you said looks like it was a hidden blessing for them.

Yep.
Lose a few cars...
Make tons of money
in admissions.

You may be right, you may be crazy, but it just may be a long road trip you're looking for.

Thanks, Billy.

I'm jealous. I'm going to miss Liesa by a couple days.

Ohh, that's too bad.
She's really nice. :)

When we get together, remind me you tell you about my F4 experience (literally)

Oh, this sounds interesting.
Sure hope I remember.

Way too cool!

Yep. ::yes::

Edit: Yes, I found all three. First time for everything I guess.

See? Not so hard. ;)

Interesting.
Mind telling me why
that particular model
and colour?

Fell in love with this model as a little girl in the late 70's. This is the last year they made the C3 and it is the only year of that generation that had an operable rear hatch (I do believe). I love grey/steel grey/gun metal grey, etc. on cars. Go figure - of the 3 new cars I have purchased in my lifetime....none of them are grey. But I did sway hubs to buy his truck in grey. lol (he did convince me to get my first vette in black....and I'm glad).

4-6 bays?
Do you have a few vehicles
already?

I guess 3 qualifies for a few. We have 3 bays now and actually park all three vehicles in the garage.
