Well, it is a good reason because, if I die, the contracts would need to go through probate, etc. and the cost and aggravation would take away much of the value.

Review the limit to pass assets through without probate. If you have other assets passed along by beneficiary or ownership, you may be below the amount and no probate would be needed.

I think it's rare for the expense to set up and manage a trust to make sense currently. It might provide other benefits but one has to have a lot of assets for it to make financial sense and retirement accounts.
