Discomforting “security checks”

I understand what you’re saying, but you might just find that it’s not that big of a deal. Or maybe I’m just used to it now. Lol.

I actually started this thread upon returning from a 7 day trip Kidani/Poly. The policy, of which we weren’t aware, unfortunately invoked such a visceral reaction in both my wife and myself (who are easygoing to a fault sometimes), leaves little hope we will ever get used to it. But that’s a personal reaction and view of which we are all entitled.

I think you can still feel safe. This has been going on for awhile now and I haven’t heard any stories of security harming anyone in the room.

I have a 12 year old daughter and she was my biggest concern when I first heard about these checks. Security did walk in on her once when she was in the room alone. She heard a man knock but chose to ignore him. She thought he would go away, but he didn’t. As soon as he came in and realized she was by herself, he apologized and left quickly without stepping into the room.

Really, the best thing you can do is inform your family and prepare them for the possibility of security coming into your room, especially if you spend a lot of time in your room mid day and/or you forgo housekeeping.
Unfortunately, working for Disney has obvious attractions for child sex abusers.

Dozens of Disney World workers arrested in child sex stings
By David K. LiJuly 15, 2014 | 11:26am
Almost three dozen Disney theme park workers have been arrested for alleged kiddie-sex crimes since 2006, according to a broadcast report.
The 35 busts have been for possession of child porn or trying to meet a minor for sex, CNN found after combing through law enforcement and court records.
So far, 32 of those busted have been convicted and the other cases are pending. Two cases of child porn allegedly happened on Disney property.

For this type of criminal, being allowed to enter hotel rooms where children are present, alone, notwithstanding the presence of a "Room Occupied" sign, would unfortunately be quite an enticing prospect.

Bad people can be anywhere. No doubt. But knowledge is power.

Now that you know the policy, you tell your child what to do if someone wants to enter the room when you’re not there.

While I do not disagree with the fact that it is private property etc etc; (not the major point and not missed) it’s a discussion to measure if the policy is worth the customer disapproval. I don’t believe anyone here has stated that they have or plan to disobey the policy. It’s had good points made for and against it. Not that I’m assuming your meaning but I wouldn’t project the intent nefarious intentions on other folks. (Apologies if I’m off base on this.

...and again the like it or leave statements can be tiresome as it’s been stated that some of the people here, myself included are DVC “owners” and abandoning ship is not as easy as “hey let’s book resort xyz off property.

Where we differ is a "room check" is one of the last things I will get upset with Disney about. You want to check my room, fine knock yourself out I have nothing to hide.

I am more upset with Disney over the "charge more, get less" approach. You want to charge me more for my AP then come up with a plan to replace the monorails and make it known. Don't slap a quick interior refurb and think it's sufficient when you didn't touch the AC.

Also, why should someone staying offsite in a non-Disney hotel have the same perks as someone onsite, where's the incentive to spend more?

Then there are the rides, I understand you can't fix everything at once but there are some that need some TLC in a bad way.

I think the major point being missed is, you chose to stay on Disney property. Unfortunately, if they want to do a room search they can, it's private property you gave up that right when you chose to stay there. Unless you are willing to abide the rules, then maybe staying on property isn't for you.

This it's Disney's property, follow their rules. Don't like em stay elsewhere

I think its weird that anyone would leave their 12 yr old in a hotel room ANYWHERE alone. With all the things going on with sex trafficking and such, there's no way I'd leave my kid alone in any hotel room at that age. I worked in prisons for far too long, and saw the worst of humanity. The people who will hurt your child could be anywhere and you have no idea. They could be sitting next to you on the park buses, behind you in line, in the room right next to you. Heck, one of the offenders on my case load was a former federal prosecutor who was in with 300+ years for child molestation. The very last kind of person yo would expect would do that.

It is easy enough to have them flip the latch so that no one can enter.

Not to mention, I prefer not to see the boogieman everywhere.

I prefer not to as well. My life experience tells me you can never be too careful, and that they are in fact, everywhere. That being said, when we are home I am not nearly as paranoid about things as I am when we travel.

I don’t think anybody is talking about leaving a child alone for hours at night.

Serious question. Would you really not leave your 12 year old alone for a minute or two in the middle of the day, say if you wanted to go to the ice machine if you needed ice, or to check if the pool was open, or to the food court steps away if you wanted to refill a mug?

steps away for ice machine or something yes. But there were posts about leaving kids in the room while the adults have a drink at the bar, which is certainly different that a min or 2.

Personally, I don’t think there is anything wrong with leaving a couple of twelve year olds together while you’re at the hotel bar.

But the point is, the security checks are happening in the middle of the day. It takes security less then 30 seconds to enter and leave.

So you might leave your child for a few minutes and in that time, security has come knocking. It’s literally that quick. I think it’s just important for kids to know what to do if they’re in that situation. I get being paranoid. But we can’t always keep them in a safety bubble.

I have absolutely no problem with the security checks, for whatever reason they are doing them, whether they are checking for weapons, trafficking or whatever. But I think that it's weird that people leave their kids alone in a hotel room and the security checks are the thing they are worried about.

My daughter just went down in April with her high school music dept (approx 110 kids). They happened to stay off property but the cross town HS stayed at one of the values. I wonder how Disney handled this. Did they coordinate with the groups to insure that they were gone? Did they forgo their own policy assuming HS students are not a high risk or did they enter multiple rooms with minors. Same question for the huge cheerleader comps.
Just curious.

You don't think a locked room with one entrance/exit is a safe place to leave a pre-teen? No one is talking about toddlers for god's sake. What if the child in the original post was 16? You want a strange man walking into a room with your 16 year old daughter? A room where the door was locked and she had expectation of privacy and is maybe napping in her tshirt or taking a shower?

Do you have eyes on your child all day every day? Are they never alone? Jeez, when I was 12 I babysat my little sister all day every day in the summer time. I would venture any normal 12 year old is perfectly capable of being by themselves for 15 minutes. I bet they could even handle *gasp* a whole hour!

If Disney makes you agree to such a policy then yes, if you stay there you've chosen to deal with it. My understanding is they AREN'T having people agree to it or even warning them until it happens the first time. There certainly isn't anything on the website about it that I have seen. So what about someone who isn't on DIS Boards? They pay thousands of dollars in advance for a vacation only to get there and either be told this policy at the desk or find out about it the first time someone barges in their room. At that point are they supposed to "go somewhere else if they don't like it"?

My personal problem with it is that nothing about it is secure. Those CMs entering rooms are technically under housekeeping. Have they had background checks? Security clearance? How do I know THEY aren't the traffickers everyone is worried about? Does Disney know? They have taken a knee jerk reaction to an extreme. They are grossly violating the privacy and safety of their customers and gaining nothing from it. If I was a decent criminal, looking in my room for 2 mins is not gonna catch me by the way. (p.s. I worked in law enforcement for many years, I'm not coming at this from an uneducated point of view.)

And yeah, talking on these boards is not going to change the policy. But this is a place for discussion after all. 😉

Didn't I just say that????

Looking in the Vegas gunman room for 2 seconds would of caught him.

I also wonder about a man who is not Disney security but pretending to be, entering a room? It seems we are supposed to open our doors to a person we don't know for sure is a Disney employee? Maybe I'm just a little too suspicious, don't know, but if I've thought about it, what about a pervert? or a criminal? Have their devious minds thought about this.
Just some random thoughts after reading these posts. FWIW

I find it amazing how the world has changed. I was the babysitter when I was 12 years old. The Girl Scouts offered a badge of some kind and I had to take a Red Cross emergency first aid class in order to get certified. I spent a good deal of my free time as a teenager babysitting. At least until I turned 16 and was finally “old enough to date”.

All of that could have happened at any time before they started doing this.
