I'm looking into a trip overseas to visit the other parks and would to know if its better to use dvc points or come out of pocket?

I tried to use DVC points for Shanghai and Tokyo for a summer 2016 visit. It was nearly impossible to get complete information and I gave up.

Basically, Member Services could not, at that time, directly book the Asia properties. Rather, they conduct the transaction via a series of phone/email/other methods when you are NOT on the phone, holding. So .. I felt pressured to "commit" to dates even before I was told the number of points required. I was given a broad range of point possibilities up front but essentially asked, "You are ready to commit to this reservation before we check availability w/out you?" Sorry, no ... I want all the information before I commit, thx, no thx.

For my dates, I did some calculations for Disneyland Paris and it turned out that paying out of pocket using their current promo was a better deal than to use points and purchase tickets.

i used points to stay at disneyland paris in 2015. $95 fee plus minimum 2 night booking. Got my park tickets through member services. When i arrived they had no record of park passes. Spent 60 mins on phone with member services. finally got it straightened out and got an extra 3 fast passes per day for the mistake.

We did not use our points, but we recently stayed at all three parks. Shanghai we stayed at the Toy Story Hotel and were shocked to find out there wasn’t a pool! I didn’t even think to look if there was a pool when booking it, so when we went back to swim after a morning in the blistering Shanghai heat you can imagine our surprise! Minus the lack of pool the hotel was great!

Hong Kong we stayed at the Hollywood Hotel and it was awesome! We liked it better than the knock off AKV right next door called the Explorers Lodge.

Tokyo we stayed at Hotel Miracosta and the Disneyland Hotel and both were outrageously expensive and in my opinion worth every penny for a once in a lifetime trip. You need to book both these 6 months out.

So as a TR fan, are you going to do a summary some day? Not your usual day-to-day but summary? You've done something most of us have not. <insert winsome smile>

I was horrible about trip reporting on my Asia trip because I didn't bring a computer with me. I did do a few posts though which I've pasted below. My Hong Kong one was the most complete. My Shanghai one didn't have any pictures because the Great Chinese Firewall didn't allow me to post any, and by the time I got to Japan I was exhausted.

Thanks! I could probably do Hong Knog or Tokyo but your TR for Shanghai made me all the more certain it is not for me. Thanks for your links!
