How far to San Diego from La Jolla?

so I booked us a hotel in La Jolla, but now am afraid we will be too far away from the things we want to do in San Diego - we plan on going to the San Diego Zoo and want to see old town etc.

Should we keep the hotel in La Jolla or find something right in San Diego? Thanks for your help.

It has been a few years since our trip to San Diego but La Jolla is only a few miles from Old Town. An educated guess would be 5-8 miles. We stayed in Old Town but LOVED La Jolla. Beautiful beaches and the town overlooks these
beaches high on a cliff. Wonderful. :cool1:

It's probably about 15 minutes from La Jolla to Old Town most of the time, 20 to Downtown San Diego. During morning/evening rush hours, longer. La Jolla is beautiful and there are a ton of little touristy shops and restaurants there.

La Jolla is a fairly general location as it can cover quite a bit of area but it's about a 15 minute drive to Old Town and a 20 minute drive to downtown. Keep in mind that traffic plays a big part of this especially if you're coming out of La Jolla by the La Jolla Shores beach. This could add 10 to 15 minutes to your drive time if you go during rush hour traffic.

We stayed in la jolla last weekend and did the zoo, old town, midway, etc and it was really easy to get to. Traffic wasn't bad either. We stayed there because the embassy suites was cheaper with free parking and with 3 kids (1 at 1 yr old), we needed the suite. Would love to be downtown or near the beach next time but we liked la jolla.

There is also a bus service that runs to the downtown area Mon-Fri daytime, and at other times to the Old Town Transit Center where you change to the Green Line Trolley. This could be an alternative to driving if you didn't want to change hotels.

We were looking to stay in the La Jolla area, but got a good deal on a hotel on Shelter Island, although this location will still need a bus to get us downtown.

La Jolla is beautiful, but keep in mind, traffic in San Diego is worse than LA... I've had it take an hour to get from La Jolla to downtown.
