NY Travel Advisory starting 11/4. NJ & CT have separate lists now

MA says they're using https://www.covidexitstrategy.org/ for determining which states are high or low risks. There's lots of data there.

You've provided a lot of helpful info regularly and especially today. I'm just adding an article that expands on this point:

https://njbiz.com/ny-nj-conn-hope-not-levy-covid-travel-restrictions/

Thanks! As the cases go up everywhere, having this thread be a group effort is great. :grouphug:

At the very least, not knowing or remembering there are travel restrictions can mess up travel plans. At the worst, (aside from health issues,) it can be an awfully expensive mistake. I've seen some reviews on a travel website that does hotel reviews, where a hotel didn't refund several travelers when they had to cancel their reservations. They mentioned it in their reviews. I think the hotel used the "non-refundable reservation" as a loophole. I get that the hotel industry has been decimated and they are struggling to survive in any way they can. :( But, it sucks for the travelers.

If you are just as likely to encounter a Covid positive person in your own state at a trip to the store, why the need for quarantining those coming from elsewhere? Isn’t that just kind of stupid?

Yes it is stupid.
Of course it's even more stupid to let 3 states off the hook when there are literally 100,000's of people traveling from them into NY daily, if you are really trying to keep the spread down anyway.

What are the NYC and it's suburb rates? I would suspect that they are similar to NJ and Conn. since they are so interconnected.

UPDATE for 10/20/2020 -10/26/2020:

2 states have been re-added: Arizona & Maryland.
(Sorry guys! :( )

No states removed as infection rates are up all over the U.S.

CT, NJ & PA - technically meets the criteria. But given interconnected nature of these states, (people living in one state and working in another,) a quarantine is not practically viable. Non-essential travel into and from other states is highly discouraged.

New York, New Jersey, & Connecticut's travel advisory is 38 states & 2 U.S. territories.

If you're traveling to NY/NJ/CT from the following states you must self-quarantine for 14 days.

The states are: (updated as of 10/20/20)
  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arizona (re-added 10/20/20)
  • Arkansas
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland (re-added 10/20/20)
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming
  • Guam
  • Puerto Rico

There was nothing personal in choosing the states. The goal of a travel restriction requiring one to quarantine is to try to control the SPREAD of the virus from coming IN from other states. Some states, even with high infection rates, have travel restrictions and quarantining to try to stop their rate going HIGHER, so as to not overwhelm their hospital systems which may already be at their limit.

NY, NJ & CT aren't the only ones requiring a 14 day quarantine. There are also about 17 other states. (We just happen to have the only thread here on the DIS.) The criteria is that these states have, unfortunately, a high infection rate of at least: 10 new COVID positive cases per 100,000 people on a 7 day chart, (called a 7-day rolling average.) OR: at least 10% of the total population is COVID-19 positive on a 7-Day rolling average.

The travel advisory/restriction does not apply to any individual passing through designated states for a limited duration (less than 24 hours,) through the course of travel. Examples of such brief passage include but are not limited to: stopping at rest stops for vehicles, buses, and/or trains; or layovers for air travel, bus travel, or train travel.

Also, some categories of essential workers who work in critical infrastructure fields are exempt. Check the state's official website for more specific info, as they are different for each state.

Specific links & info for each state will be in the 3 posts after the first post of this thread. There is a post designated for each of the 3 states.

The latest, updated list will always be in the first post. This way people don't have to hunt for it.
(The thread title will be updated too, so you know there are changes.)

Here is a FULL LIST of all states with Coronavirus Travel Restrictions by State compiled by CNN as of 10/20.

However:
As a general rule: before making any trip anywhere, check the official state website (ends in .gov) of the location you plan to visit right before you leave home, as this is such a dynamically changing situation. The travel advisories for that state may change at any time due to local circumstances.

NEW:
New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania now have COVID Alert apps which work in conjunction with each other to regionally alert you if you've been in contact with someone for 10 minutes or more, and have been possibly exposed to someone who later tests positive for COVID-19. :thumbsup2 If you live in, or are traveling into one of these states, download the app, keep it on your phone for a full 2 weeks after your visit and then delete the app. Hopefully, it will never go off.

Download one HERE. :surfweb:

I'm not sure that this has been covered here, but you don't have to quarantine in CT if you had a RT-PCR negative Covid test within the last 72-hours. We live in Wisconsin, a "naughty state", and visited my MIL two weeks ago. We had planned to cool our heels in "safe states" (MI, OH and PA were are "safe" back then) for 2 weeks and then we found out we could test. We tested 2 days before entering CT for the week, got our results in 1 day and filled out the paperwork as soon as we arrived. We did get some "side eyes" from people in CT, "You're from WISCONSIN?!?" :rotfl:I understood their concern and assured them we tested negative days before.

Ironic that California is a yellow and they will not allow Disneyland to open.

I just finished a 2 week PA quarantine from my Florida trip. California is not on the PA list.

UPDATE for 10/27/2020 -11/2/2020:

2 states have been (re-)added: California & Massachusetts.

MA has never been on the list before. :( It currently is on only NJ's list as it is not a border state of NJ.

NY is currently only discouraging any NON-essential travel to/from MA & PA, (which meet the qualifications & metrics to be on the list. But both states are border states, with too many interchanges between the states and too many people who live in one state and work in the other, making it impossible/impracticable to be able to enforce a quarantine.)

No states removed as infection rates are up all over the U.S. :(

Some good news:
MAINE actually has the LOWEST COVID infection rate in the U.S. despite having the oldest population. Keep it up! :thumbsup2

SUNY's 64 colleges and universities are planning to test all 140,000-ish students within 10 days of sending them home for the Thanksgiving break, in an effort to prevent any community spread. So, you parents will get a healthy child coming home. :thumbsup2 Happy Thanksgiving. 🦃

Then SUNY will transition most colleges and universities to remote learning after Thanksgiving. :duck:(SUNY New Paltz has already said they've cancelled spring break.)

New York, New Jersey, & Connecticut's travel advisory is 39 states & 2 U.S. territories.

This says that Massachusetts is not on the list though it qualifies, as Mass borders with New York.

Sounds like Cuomo's leaning towards dropping the quarantine requirements and going to a testing requirement.

I hope so. I'd like to be able to visit relatives out of state. My husband's aunt lives in NC, she asked us to visit over the holidays. She lives alone and barely leaves the house. I don't think visiting her is any riskier than staying home.

He didn't mention anything about it in his news conference yesterday. There have been ideas he and the various department heads have mentioned in the past they were researching, but then due to the research & metrics, or new discovery and guidelines by the CDC, WHO and global infectious disease experts they are consulting with, they end up scrapping the idea. I was hoping to post an update. If anyone else happens to see an update DO post it. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the correction. :thumbsup2

:headache: It's been re-added on to NJ's quarantine list, which is where I got the info from. (Their list actually lists which states have been re-added.) This info may also be subject to change.

However, MA is not listed on the NY list.
(CT has not currently updated their list yet. But, it's a safe bet MA will NOT be on as it's a border state, with so many traveling back & forth between those two states.)

Okay, according the 5 o'clock local ABC news, NY is currently discouraging any NON-essential travel to/from PA & MA. Even though both states meet the qualifications and metrics to be on the list, they are not officially added for quarantining.

Praying to everything that is holy that this goes into effect. We have flights to California for Christmas, would love to visit family out of state and even possibly sneak a WDW trip in. And like he states, quarantine is almost impossible to enforce. Rapid testing would make so much more sense here.
