How does one become a professional photographer? Is there some coursework you have to do or is it like a college level class? Any ideas or suggestions?

There's not a certification or test to take. A "pro" photographer is just someone whose pictures are good enough that he/she is able to make money at it.

If you're asking where to go to learn how to take better pictures, yes there are college and continuing education classes. Check your local community college. There are also books you can buy and web sites geared to learning photography.

There are college programs in photography and other schools of photography such as the New England School of Photography in Boston where you can learn the art of photography as well as the business of photography. No, they are not required but it sure helps. It isn't just about taking (and selling) good photos, you need to know how to run a business too. Many people start out by being assistants to photographers to learn the business and get contacts.

First: get good
Second: get clients
Third: bill clients
Fourth: cash checks

you are now a pro
