Would you rent a scooter?

So, I have nonrefundable hotel reservations because I purchased them through a travel site. Two weeks ago, my 14 year old kid gets a hairline fracture right below his knee. He is in a full length soft brace (as opposed to a cast), and he limps around the house without crutches. He can't bend his knee while wearing the brace.

I really don't want him to walk the distances required in the parks, but he doesn't think he will be able to extend his knee while he rides the scooter. Also, he is concerned that it is a hassle to use it. What would you do in my situation?

Is it a brace he can walk on?

The scooter will be tough if he cannot bend his leg. I would suggest a larger scooter with a swivel chair. But instead of using it 100% of the time, he uses it to get to an area then do that area on 'foot'. This way, he is not spending most of the park 'walking' and not having to always deal with the inconvenience of the scooter.

You may want to check if a 14 year old would even be allowed to operate a scooter in the parks. I think there is an age regulation of about 18 years old. I'm not positive, though, so it is something you would need to check into.

My 14 broke his foot right before our trip last year, as in the day before. Not the same scenario. If you can find a method of transport that he is comfortable in, then I would go. My son had a wheelchair and crutches, foot was in a boot. We would push to an area, then he would crutch around. He could not have possibly crutched around all day. He wanted to wheel himself, but he didn't have any experience and could not effectively get himself around.

It wasn't a problem for him to do rides, except for keeping the boot dry on wet rides.

He felt embarassed for a few days...mostly because he felt like a faker, since he could transfer from the chair.

He got overheated sitting in the chair more than he would have had he been walking around.

If he can't bend his knee using a scooter, he might have an issue on some rides bending the knee.

Last October I went to the park and was 5 months out from TKR..
I tried to do the gringots ride but could not bend my knee in the ride.
The safety bar was the issue for me.

They escorted me off.
Had that happen on another ride

Rides where I could stretch my leg out, were fine for me.

Is your trip coming up soon?
Check with his doctor if he can go without the soft brace for a few hours each day

Maybe the push wheelchairs that they rent at the park would work.
The legs can extend a tad bit so they are not making him sit at a right angle.

They would actually have a hard time stopping someone from using their own, personal scooter, in the park.

BUT, I'm betting that no one will rent one to him.

Plus, even if he had a personal scooter, you can't use them in any of the ride cues except for the Hogwarts Express. You have to transfer to a wheelchair to enter into the ride cues.

MaryLovesPoohBear was correct.

I searched the UO site and found:

Guests can rent strollers, wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECV) upon entrance to Universal Studios Florida™ and Universal’s Islands of Adventure™, to the left side of each park's entrance. Manual wheelchairs are also available at the Rotunda area of the parking structure. Due to limited numbers, please note that ECV Rentals are on a first-come, first-served basis and must be operated by a single person 18 years of age or older.

NOTE: We suggest you place a request in advance for ECV rentals (at least 1 week prior to your arrival). This can be done by contacting Guest Services by calling 407-224-4233.

Strollers and Electronic Convenience Vehicles (ECVs) will not be available for rent at Universal’s Volcano Bay™. Wheelchairs are readily available at the Concierge Booths located throughout the park for guests that may need them.

You can rent one of the push wheelchairs for him to use.
But, you would be the one to push him in the parks.

But if you rented from a company offsite, I don't think it would matter to UO staff.

Yes it is correct that they won't rent to under 18. But rent from an offsite place and there is no question by them of the age of the operator. I doubt they would stop someone at the gate in a scooter that was clearly incapacitated.

I wouldn't assume that.

There is a reason that Disney won't rent to someone under 18. And I am sure that offsite companies don't want that liability either.

I am not assuming. I have rented on my last 3 trips for someone else in my family. The only question asked is how heavy. I am the person who picks up and drops off to the delivery truck, so they never meet the actual rider.

Which means that they don't know that they are renting to a child. That isn't the same thing as the vendor knowingly renting to a child.

Yes, you can certainly hide information about the driver. In fact, I am sure that you could rent for someone that is blind. As long as the vendor doesn't know, they won't have a problem with it.

Best practice? Let the vendor know, in advance, the situation. I would then feel like I was doing the right thing.

I am hiding nothing. If they ask, I tell. And a 14/15 year old is hardly a child. They are as tall as 6' and in another year they will be getting their permit to drive a vehicle as large as a 26,000lb truck. This is a small ECV. They go faster and more reckless on a bicycles and skateboards.

Thanks everyone for your responses. We see the doctor again the week before we go. So, I will have time to make a decision once I have more information. Overheating was something i hadn't thought about. That makes sense. Maybe we will just walk really slow and do a little at a time.

I feel like a wheelchair rental would be better for him, and I would call the rental places to see if they have any where he can extend his leg.
