Love the mascots!! I have to say that my fav almost swung to Hokie (who doesn't love a castrated turkey??), but LiserAnn, I'm holding strong on Anteater. So totally not a warrior energy coming from that! (Ours was the home of the Pioneers...)

Carolyn

Aw . . . c'mon . . . at least they made the anteater look fearsome - instead of dopey like our Zippy. And as for the castrated Turkey, I KNOW he is angry!

Do we need a new poll? Dumbest mascot? popcorn::

We looked at hotels that weekend, too, and couldn't figure out why there was nothing available that weekend. Now, I know. We'll probably just drive up for the meet and head home after.

Carolyn

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN PREMIERE IS SAT 5/19.....could be one reason for hotel issues. Jeeeze, I'd better make sure I can get my room

Anteater? Fearsome?? Sorry...just doesn't go. I do like Zippy's name. Instills a real sense of...dread?...fear?...no, happiness! But, kangaroos are dangerous with those feet! Anteater still wins, for me!:)

And, well, I'll concede that the castrated turkey is PROBABLY angry, he has a really silly name. And, he can always run away. What can an anteater do? Smack the opponents with his tongue?

Carolyn, getting just a little silly (must be the heat outside...)

Thank you, Jackie. You know I'm so NOT a Disneyphile. Never would have associated the two. Still haven't seen the second Pirates movie... I hope all these events don't make getting reservations tricky for LiserAnn.

Here is the Stanford Unofficial Mascot, the Tree:

stanford-mascot.jpg

Some history behind "The Tree"

In 1975 the Stanford Band performed a halftime show that suggested (in jest) several possible mascot candidates: the Steaming Manhole, the French Fry, and of course, the Tree. The Tree received so much positive attention that the Band decided to make it a permanent fixture.

For the first decade, the role of the Tree was generally performed by the Band managers' girlfriends; in the mid-1980's, however, the Band adopted a more formal selection process for its Trees. Today's Tree candidates must go through grueling and humiliating physical and mental challenges to show that he or she has sufficient chutzpah to be the Tree. During "Tree Week," candidates are known for performing crazy and apparently dangerous stunts; so much so that the University has felt the need to prohibit certain types of audition activities over the years.

The Tree costume is also a prominent target for rival University of California, Berkeley (Cal) pranksters. In October 1998, fraternity brothers from Cal known as the "Phoenix Five" stole the costume and held it "hostage" for two weeks.

Well, I am wondering who came up with the name of "Peter"...{I'll keep it clean}....maybe it's because it rhymes with anteater and it was the best they could do?!? Certainly not a fearsome name (Peter), that's for sure! So embarrassing....and during basketball games they would want you to call out "zot, zot" (you know, the sound an anteater makes when he's slurping an ant up). Please!

Funny how something that was supposed to be a joke, became a reality! In junior high, a few class leaders started a drive to rename the school to Slim Whitman Junior High. They had petitions, a rally, blared Slim Whitman music, even took it to the school board. Not a lot to do in our little hometown, I guess...

Especially for this board - how can you not love this mascot!

Donald Duck! That's the best!

Be kind to your web-footed friends
For a duck may be somebody's mother....

My UofO alumni mom used to sing that to us...no, not a scary mascot, either!

sorry 12/9'ers.....I posted there already!

and it takes the DIS - whether trip reports or keeping up with cruise mates to really see the change in my girls!!! My gosh!! Cruise time they will look totally different as I hope and pray to!

I've got a mascot story, although it's not college, or even high school. Back in the 70s, the principal of the elem. school where I was teaching decided that the school needed a mascot. So every class (K-6th gr.) was asked to nominate something for the mascot and the whole student body would vote.

One of the nominees was the cow (didn't win). Another nominee was Fonzie. The votes were counted--as far as the kids knew, the winner was the cobra. In reality, the winner was Fonzie, but the principal just couldn't do it--thank goodness. The Miller Valley Fonzies--just didn't project the right image!:scared1:

So we were the Miller Valley Cobras until just a few years ago, when the current principal very slyly changed the mascot to the miner. He never liked the cobra. If he only knew what it could have been...;)

As you guys know, I am on EB and WB. The EB website was "broken into" by this group called . As best I can tell, they are DIS people who have been banned from DIS. There was viruses sent out and I am not too sure of what else went on. Well, they must have gotten my e-mail address off of that site, as I got the following e-mail.....kinda of Yucky:confused3

It is very sad they have to advertise for members.

Censorship? Being treated like a child and being told what you can and cannot say? Is LBGraves more than a little overbearing as she roars what topics and subjects are allowed and which are not?

Sound like a typical day on the DIS?

Why not join a group of like-minded DCL cruisers that will actually value your independent thinking? That will actually speak up for your right to have your own thoughts and express your own feelings without fear of total censorship.

**********************
(the stars are the website for the group)

You just might find freedom of expression is more than a little bit addictive
