Compliments of the Resorts Forum - Designated Smoking areas at DVC Resorts

I'm glad I'm not a smoker at AKL. Those people are going to have a LONG walk to get a smoke.

I'm VERY disappointed that they decided to make all the smoking areas at OKW the pool areas! I guess that means I wont be able to enjoy the hot tubs anymore.

Thanks for posting this! I'm happy I chose SSR as my home. Now I'm even more thrilled since they've been able to allow smoking at each guest building!!

I guess I don't understand if that means the entire pool area is a smoking area, or if there is a smaller designated smoking area at each pool.

I also noticed that there is a smoking symbol at each pool at SSR except the Grandstand pool. Don't know if that's an error, or if the Grandstand pool will be a totally smoke-free pool.

I'm missing something. There are clearly SSR buildings (7101-7436 / 7501 - 7836) .. and others where there is no smoking symbol in front of the entrance.

There are entire sections of SSR with no smoking... aren't there? Or am I missing something incredibly obvious?

Yep, you're missing :) ! In the blue box on the left side at the bottom it says Designated Smoking Area with the Icon and underneath it says "Also at the front of each Guest room building"

Well, even if there is just a "bench area" for smoking at the pools, you know there will be so many folks there, it wont be limited to the bench. I don't believe smoking is allowed IN the hot tubs though. I just think those small pool areas could get to be like a BBQ pit for smoke.

Thanks for posting this. Its does look like the SSR smoking areas are near the pools but on the paths near by or back pretty far.The CP pool smoking area is along the path to DTD not directly inside the pool area.

I so know whatcha mean about not being able to enjoy! DH and I can no longer get a smoking designated villa nor can we any longer enjoy morning coffee/evening cocktail on the patio with a few smokes.

I do hope that the pool areas have separated areas for smokers - the last thing that I as a smoker want is to hear non-smokers moaning or gasping after I have trekked all the way to the pool just so that I could have a cigarette! Turtle Pond and Miller's Rd seem big enough to have a separate area for smokers - South Point might not. Wouldn't it be great if OKW could have either Miller's Rd or South Point designated non-smoking! Maybe that was too easy to think of.

It looks like this new policy is creating more hardships and heartaches than anyone imagined! I can only remember my church pastor saying, "If you give them air conditioning in the summer, they will want heat in the winter!" whenever the issue about air conditioning the church! Seems like that is what we have with the new policy.

When it says "also at the Front of each Guest room building" (OKW and SSR) do they have a designated area at the front or is it anywhere? It would be pointless if not and I don't want to "run the gauntlet" each time I am going to my room. I would hate if Disney had it set like an office building. No smoking in the building so all the smokers smoke right at the entrance forcing everyone to walk through their disgusting smoke. While I can hold my breath those few seconds, my DS, 8 months old, can not. I hope DVD didn't drop the ball on this one.

when we were at okw in feb in bldg 44 there was a dsa at the end on the bldg facing the bus stop area - that spot had benches and ash trays. there was also a path from the parking lot a few doors away from the dsa - that path had a tall planter-like cigarette receptacle but no benches like the seating area had. so my guess is that there are more entry ways without smoking areas than wth them.

I too am concerned about the "gauntlet effect", but the great thing about SSR is there are entrances on each end of each bldg. I dont expect it to be too bad, but if it is, we can always use the other doors, and still access the elevators if need be.

Thats true about all the entrances. Just thinking ahead to next month (38 more days! :cool1: )

Also, now that the 1st has come and gone, does anyone know what happened to the smoking rooms? Where they taken out of inventory to be cleaned up? With the psycho strict policy about talking about The Policy I haven't read anything about this. If they didn't take the rooms our of inventory that is very poor planning.

Actually AKL has had the same DSAs for a while. My sister used them a couple of years ago. They are nothing new. They are a long walk from some of the rooms but they worked out okay for her.

We were there at Thanksgiving and my eldest hates smoking and it was like running the gauntlet(sp) to get from DME stop to Carriage House and back.

I just got the most interesting visual at that thought. I did think that walkway was an interesting gauntlet, usually filled with luggage & luggage carts (had to exit via the road a few times when headed back to Grandstand) and departing guests. It was sort of like the Walk of Sadness with all those poor folks going home. Now I guess it'll resemble purgatory with a smokey haze. At least it's covered from the rain.

The benches outside the buildings are in the open, not under cover where the elevators are. It's possible to avoid them if you must. I did encounter a couple ladies my last trip who came down in their jammies for an early morning smoke while their husbands were sleeping in. It really didn't bother me until I got a foot too close to them and the smoke wafted by. Then I backed up and continued the conversation.

Really? People couldn't smoke on the balconys at AKL before the new policy?

from what i have read on the resort and community boards this is another problem - the smoking rooms have been pretty well deodorized but things like the furniture and mattresses have not been. imagine what we will pay to replace all of that! or imagine guest reaction if we do not! oh well, change requires adjustment and i guess it isn't always in the direction we thought it would be or wanted it to be.

So we non-smokers will have to use the side entrances in order to avoid the smokers at the front entrance? That's not acceptable to me. I sure hope you are right and it won't be an issue. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

I guess it's the trade off for smoke free rooms and balconies. I spend very little time in the entrance but much more time on my patio and although I have not suffered from smoking on patios, others have, so I am willing to compromise.:wizard: It's nice to know that I dont have to worry about it now.
