How embarrassing! Perceptions of DVC members...

Does anyone watch the TV show "Airline", either the US version or the GB version?

Maybe a new, similar, TV show titled "DVC Member".....:happytv:

Don't take offense, MrsNick, I think Dis Fix was simply making a joke referencing the old stereotype of NYers being rude. :)

So does this mean it would be in my best interest NOT to bring that beautiful tote bag with me on my first trip home:sad1:?
Bring it with you and carry it proudly, I'd never let a few idiots from any group dictate how we all act. For the most part the people I have met during my stays at DVC resorts are extremly friendly and easy going. It's almost as though we are in some way connected when we meet at different places, even on the plane ride down or sitting in the airport. We take our chances and are happy with the rooms we get and expect no special favors other than those listed as perks. I have seen a few knuckleheads but they're are some in every group. The only thing we can do is try to be extra nice to the cm that has just put up with them. Take your bag and enjoy you first trip Welcome Home!!:grouphug:

In NY the stereotype isn't rude it's normal. Similar to some Asians. I like my space, but in some countries, rubbing up against someone and packing a enclosed space to overflowing with people is considered normal. I guess it's all how you look at it. :confused3

the theme parks and resorts board don't like us as is - this type of situation only increases it.

if she is a DVC member why doesn't she have them stay at a DVC resort on her points.

something doesn't make sense.

how about a florida resident who promised to enable her relatives stay at Pop century - only to find it is booked.

which means they might be staying with her. Hey that would get yelling!

Wow, I really hate to hear that you guys feel disliked by others on these boards! I am not a DVC member, but I really wish I was! I keep hoping that one day DH will see the light! For now, I must be content with renting points from one of the nicest people I've ever "met" on the DISboards. I personally haven't witnessed anyone demanding anything unreasonable just because they're DVC members. I've ordered the DVC info from Disney; it seems pretty well laid out what the benefits of DVC are.

But, as another poster said, some guests in general will demand more because they are staying at the GF and should be treated more specially than someone staying at the AS. I think it has more to do with an individual's personality than a stereotype of a group of people as a whole. Some are thankful for the opportunity to have a wonderful vacation. Some people are never happy & are always looking for something to gripe about.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly, in NY rudeness is the norm?

If someone acts up that badly, they should simply ask for their Memership Card to prove that they, indeed, are members.

Once they have the card the CM should say, "We will be shredding your card at the directions of DVC. They will send you your money back for your purchase of the timeshare and they do not want you to purchase ever again."

That ought to do it! :thumbsup2

No... What I am saying is, what is perceived as rudeness by some people may be considered normal behavior by others. An example would be that in some cities honking your car horn is normal behavior, in my city, the Police would pull you over and ask why are you honking your horn.

True enough, especially if one is honking at the aggressive driver who just cut you off and missed you by a half inch :rotfl2:

To some people 1/2 inch is "to close for comfort", to others, "I had plenty of room". :)

I would be horrified if I didn't have enough sense to make my reservations in a timely manner, then yell at the front desk because there wasn't room for my family. Whose fault is it anyway? Then to throw in being a DVC member, If I should ever hear such a conservation, I am afraid, I will have to say something.

True Story, We were staying at AKL, Thanksgiving 2005, two parties were traveling together, the front desk had given one a room upgrade, not the other. I, just happened to be checking in, when the second one came down to see, if she could get upgraded. The resort was full. For some reason those words didn't seem to make sense to her. She fussed, then she screamed, then she pounded her fists. I looked over thinking this is really getting bad. The manager came over, he did everything he could to explain to the woman, that there was not anything available. It was Thanksgiving weekend, no less. She reminded him how much money she was spending! I had booked 3 Savanna rooms, so mine was not cheap. The CM helping me apolized and I said," no problem, I am sorry you have to deal with people like that." "It's Disney!" " Where's the magic?"
Point I am making, I try to make all my check-ins as nice and easy as I possibly can, I don't know what just checked in ahead of me. Shame on people that try to throw weight around, if being DVC member is weight. :rolleyes1

I absolutely love that show. Actually there should be just a general Disney version!

I've seen that kind of thing happen at the parks as well-not with people specifically claiming DVC "rights" but their "rights" as people who "spent a lot of money to come here and we want to do X and you have no right to stop us from doing it!!" I think many times CM's pick their battles with these types of guests. I can understand not wanting to create a larger scene and a more irate guest, but the message they are inadvertantly sending is that having a tantrum will allow you to do whatever you want.

DD was/is a cm and they do their best to enforce the rules, ie. people who want to use their fp's before their time, line cutting, things like that. Usually when it goes to a higher level of management, those managers give in to the rudeness, which puts the cm's into an even worse light in the eyes of rude guests. I get real defensive when I read the rude cm's threads because they can't win.

:offtopic: Really thought about jumping in here, even had a reply written, then I thought no lets not go there. Being originally from NJ, DF was from the Bronx, I'll settle for saying that "I love NY".

I'm a DVC member.

I'm a New Yorker.

I'm Asian.

Is that a 3 strikes and you're out?

 No wait! You'd better give me what I want NOW  or I'm going to rudely invade your private space while screaming "But I'm a DVC member!!" the whole time!!!!

jk :rotfl2: But yikes, I would hate to be a CM and have to deal with people like that all the time. :sad2:

For some people, spending a lot of money brings on a sense of entitlement. The more money spent, the more they feel they are entitled to. It doesn't surprise me that a dvc member who spent a lot of money to buy in to the program would feel that they should be entitled to everything they want. Too bad manners and respect aren't a requirement to buy dvc, or even common sense for that matter.

Yes Chuck you are right having a little chuckle at such a boorish display. I am a New Yorker if you couldn't detect the sarcasm.
Sorry
