Canon 400D (Rebel Xti, Kiss X)

How much money do you want to spend?

I have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 which is fantastically sharp with great IQ. It's the lil bro to the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

I have that combined with a Canon 70-200 f/4 L which is a great zoom lens for the money ($500 used). It has a creamy smooth bokeh that the 55-250 IS lacks. Then again, it IS a few hundred dollars more, so that's expected.

I can only comment on the 28-135IS I have it and use it more than any other lens.

the 55-200IS may not be wide enough for me - I tend to take more photos at the wider range. but that extra 200 would be nice.

Have you read reviews on the two lenses?

I have been reading reviews today. Sometimes the more reviews I read the more confused I get. I may try the tamron 28-75 instead.

Thanks for the response. I am looking for a lens in the $300-$400 price range.

After reading your & janns posts, I did some reading on the Tamron 28-75. It looks like many people are happy with it, but it also looks like people have had touble with it. I am definately considering this lens instead of the Canon.

I have the Tamron 28-75 and it stays on my camera 99% of the time, a great all purpose sharp lens. I've got some decent example of what it can do if you are interested.

because some third party lenses can be questionable quality control i think i would buy one where i could try it out first or at least not have to spend a lot of time and money to ship it back. i think the quality control of tamron at least is better than it used to be ( and like my first 28-235 even canon copies can be bad sometimes) but none the less i might buy "easily returnable"
and the only problem i have with reviews is sometimes they review a $200 lens and say "it's not an L lens" like they think it should be comparable...which i then figure, well yeah dummy it's not $1200 either:rotfl2: and there is often some name brand bias so i usually figure a tamron/sigma review of an 8.8 or 8.9 is probably equal to a canon 9 or 9.2. you also have to see what makes it less high, is it because it's not weathersealed/plastic etc or is it because it's lousy iq. for a cheaper lens i would accept not as tough build if the iq is very good/great
dizzyv6p's is pretty much the set up i am moving to...i figure hub can use the 28-135 when i get the 28-70( i really want the f2.8 or i would just stick with the canon), the 17-40 or 50 is good for wide angle unless i just go with a wide prime and i have my 70-200 so i will be one happy girl with those and the canon 100 macro..wish i had just gone with them to start but hindsight......

Me too, other than sports it stays on 99% of the time.

I wish I could have an all purpose lens lol
I was at Niagara Falls last week. I was often switching back and forth from my Tamron 18-50 2.8 to the Canon 70-200 F4(rented)

If you are a savvy Cannon rebel xti user would you please PM me.
I have a few questions and even though I have looked on line a simple guider who wouldn't mind a few questions would really be help full.

I want to increaseup my the contrast and sharpness and saturation I just don't like how FLAT my pictures look. Steery1's pictures really got me wanting to do this and to be honest...I just don't know how or how much.

So if you could help me I would REALLY be thankful

Like I said in my PM, in my Sonys menu I can increase or decrease the contrast, sharpness and saturation. I found my pics were coming off the camera a little flat, lacking something. So I increased the saturation and contrast a couple of notches.
I can then tweak them a little in photoshop after the fact if needed. :)
But like I also said in my PM, quite a few of the pics I have posted recently have been from my little Sony Cybershot DSC-P100 point and shoot on full auto. So no settings adjusted with them, just straight off the camera.
There are a few xti users about here so I'm sure one will be along soon with some more knowledgeable advice :)

You should start shooting in RAW mode and post-process your photo's to make them "Pop". It's easy to adjust Color, saturation, sharpness, etc. in software.

FYI - You can post-process JPEGs too, but RAW files are much more versatile.

Hi, based on this board's recommendations, I purchased a Canon Rebel XTi a few years ago. Well, yesterday, my car was broken into while on a daytrip, and yes, the piece of ##$ stole my camera. What should I replace it with? I loved the camera, but I know as with everything else, the technology has improved. Do I replace it with the Si? Any recommendations and advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

The XSi is getting great reviews - and so is the 40D. Either would be a great choice.

Sorry to hear about the break in. :goodvibes

It sounds like you were happy with the XTi so I would suggest sticking with something familiar. The XSi, as stated above, gets great reviews. Get to your local shop and take a test run (i.e., hold it). If it feels right, by all means, go for it.

But, if you found your XTi lacking at times, maybe it's time for an upgrade. Check out the 40D (assuming the ##$ didn't steal your lenses) or look at other brands (assuming ##$ did) and see what feels right with the features you've been yearning for.

Thank you SO much for all of your help! I'm gonna shop beginning next week and see which looks the best for my use. I appreciate the responses.

Okay, can I ask one more question? I have been reading online, and comparing the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1 mp @ $699.99; the EOS Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 mp @ $799.99; and the EOS 40D 10.1 mp @ $1299.99. I am leaning toward the XSi. As I said, I had the XTi and felt completely comfortable with it, and it met all my needs. I LOVE pictures, but I am certainly a novice. I have purchased Understanding Exposure, but I don't completely understand aperture and depth and all the photography terminology. I take pictures at Disney, any little day trips, school functions, and the soccer field for the most part. Is the XSi my best choice? What are your opinions? TIA!
