Day 1 of getting up early and going to bed early. So far the kids have done well. I know Emma's having a hard time going to bed early, though. Tomorrow we are up at 5:30a! So, we'll see how it goes! Emma's getting better but still has a nasty cough. Today was her last day of medicine. So, we'll see how it goes! Got DH to pull out his clothes tonight. We just did a quick weight and he's about 4 pds over. I'll start packing the kids stuff and mine tomorrow. Then doing what Krisann suggested and write it all down in case we loose a suitcast. Off to bed! Weird that it's not even 8:30p yet!

You've brought back memories of our Big One. Our houses almost touch each other here. During the EQ the noise, not the shaking was the most scary. The houses hitting each other as they swayed, the glass breaking in the houses and the telephone poles creaking as they bent all made so much noise. val

I just can't imagine experiencing that and I hope no one else has to again. When we lived in NY, we experience a small one during the night; it sounded like 18-wheelers were driving through the room. That was bad enough.

Good for you. I can't seem to get to bed before 12:30-1 am :sad2:.

So the reason for the helicopter last night was because a gentleman managed to leave a nursing home and got lost. He was found and is okay.

It is just so strange that after living here for 32 years, in the past two weeks, we are hearing helicopters. Never before have we had any problems. I just keep thinking I don't need this excitement!!!!

Yes, it's true. This needs to be used whenever you swim, wash hair, etc. With my hair, I don't mind it so much. My problem is that I will blow dry and flat iron my hair and then it will turn curly just by going out into the humidity. With the lotus shield I don't have that problem. (And it fits better with my budget. lol)

Rene

I understand completely. Doing these treatments every 4 months or so is an expensive proposition. I am really glad that you found something that works. I will have to mention it to my DD who has been looking for something like that to keep her hair more manageable.

That's great news!!! Now you can relax and enjoy the adventure!!

:thumbsup2

That's a relief. I have a couple of crowns and after awhile you forget which ones are the real teeth and which ones are the crowns. Very cool about the glasses. I'll bet Dennis is amazed at how much he can see now.

He is! He has worn glasses since he was 12, and should have had them before that. A teacher noticed he could not see the board.

He has had crowns before and actually these are replacements. He had decay under the crowns. :confused3

So glad you were not in danger and really glad they found him safe.

My mama called. :lovestruc I think she is getting a little nervous that we are going to be out of touch for a couple of weeks. She lives in WA State very near my sister, but she always calls Dennis for advice so she is getting a bit anxious. She likes Dennis best! I told her I will call her for sure a couple of times before we leave the US and then as soon as we get back to FL. Dennis told her she should be going with us!

I think the horn will be ok - its loud banging sounds that are keeping us on our toes.

There was an article on the news today about the "roar" of the earthquakes which explains why some of them are so noisy. Its the noise I remember from last Saturday - waking up and having it sound like a freight train was coming through the house. Pure terror

Waves rushing through the ground are the cause of the stomach-tightening rumble that sets nerves jangling just before an earthquake hits.

The distinctive roar – half-vibration, half-sound – before each aftershock is making quake-weary Cantabrians jumpy.

GNS Science seismologist Warwick Smith said the sound could be loud or indistinct.

"Some of the noise in an earthquake is the noise of the buildings moving, but there is a low rumbling noise you often hear which is the vibration of the earthquake itself," he said.

"It's just at a high enough frequency that you can hear it. The sound waves travel through the Earth."

Immediately after a fault broke, P-waves (primary waves) and S-waves (secondary waves) radiated out from the rupture, he said.

"What is happening is generally you are hearing the P-wave and then feeling the secondary wave. Just like in a thunderstorm, with the thunder and lightning, the time between the P and S waves is a measure of how far away it is."

In an earthquake like last Saturday's, the second set of waves could strike quickly, Smith said.

"When it's that big, that P-wave is going to knock you around as well. It's faster than the speed of sound in air," he said.

"The P-waves travel at somewhere around five kilometres a second and the S-waves about 3km a second, so if you are a few kilometres away you will get the sound."

I remember the sound from our last big quake here, the Loma Prieta. Once heard, it is a sound that you never forget.

We have a policy for the family that no news is good news and that we will not be traveling home for any reason whatsoever including someone dying. If they don't hear from us, they should assume that we are having a fabulous trip - if they do hear from us, its because we have a major issue they need to know about or have managed to find somewhere to gloat online :lmao:

I think that is a wise policy for travel such vast distances. My sister and her husband were on their honeymoon in Europe 1980 when my spouse died. There was nothing they could do so they did not know until they got home.

I am giving my children my itinerary to keep in touch via email if I can find the time. If not, they can review the trip in pictures when we get home.

Will he be signing autographs and allowing pictures ;)

Yes, at a greatly reduced price for this group!!

I detest hairdressers that take so long to do your hair - my time is too valuable. I either get Mum to do it or find the cheapest place possible what are wanting as many bums on seats as they can.

For me, it is a great time to gossip, read trashy magazines and generally have a good time. I know everyone in the salon since I have been going there for quite awhile.

I only go every 6 weeks or so and have since I was a little girl. I used to go every Saturday with my grandmother while she had a shampoo set and her nails done so I guess I am just continuing the tradition.

I like how you can read these magazines in about 1/4 of the time if you read them in 6 months time ... no they didn't, no she wasn't etc etc ;)

Trashy magazines can be a guilty pleasure especially if you don't take them too seriously

The rocking will be fine - its the noises that are getting us. Its been fairly consistently mentioned by people I know that noises are making them jumpy ... that and the fact that we are all tucking into "comfort food".

I think that is one consistent thing that people do is tuck into comfort food after a crisis.

I can hardly wait either - I'm starting to get pretty excited now!

We are beyond excited into the calm before the storm stage.

I think you have failed our group requirements, should have completed both at least 6 months ago :rotfl2:

Agreed!!

We are well through our "to do" list for today and have our sitting coming in a couple of hours to go through the final checklist and familiarity.

This time in 2 days, Robert will have taken off about 3 hours ago and I will have just taken off out of Christchurch to Sydney.[/QUOTE]

Three days from now we will have been in the air for 1 hour and 20 minutes if our flight is on time from SFO.

Thank you for that Paula. You are the first one I have ever seen voice my sentiments exactly. I'm not coming home, no matter what. That is why I went to visit my 94 year old Dad last weekend. I have explained to all my friends and family, do not tell me any bad news while I'm away. The only thing I can do is cry my eyes out. I can do that when I get back; don't need a head start...:goodvibes:goodvibes

I second your sentiments. That is precisely why we did not notify my sister many years ago when my spouse died. Why would I want their honeymoon to be forever associated with the death of my spouse?

I really, really, like you Noel.:love::love:

Hello all....it is truly hard to believe that next week at this time we will be a couple of hours away from Barcelona....two years ago we booked this cruise and now it is here.....just cannot believe it. DW will begin packing tomorrow....and that is a major accomplishment since we usually never start packing until the day before....safe travels to all and will see ya real soon!

I told everyone in my family that if something happened to anyone in the family, what was I going to do??? It is not like James Bond that I could just get off the ship if I needed to. Yes I would be sad, but things happen. My phone will be turned off and I will not answer it till we get back in the states.

I love my hairdresser. I have been going to her for about 7 years now. I do have to tell her to "Back away from the client" after an hour.:lmao: I cannot stand the feel of hair after a haircut, so I just go home and take a shower and undo all she has done with the styling!!!

Hi everyone!

I got a few things done today for the cruise including buying a new dress. My mom thought it was so cute that she insisted on buying it for me...however my sister can wear it too so it works out.

I'm hoping to work tomorrow - however, my track record for the last two Saturdays has been being sick. I'm HOPING that isn't the case tomorrow. I stopped the injections and I feel so much better so I'm glad.

I can't believe that next week we'll be getting on the Magic! It doesn't seem possible! :)

What a lovely thing to say! Thank you!!

That was a very courageous and selfless thing to do for your sister; to put her happiness before everything, in spite of peer pressure I'm sure from others who were telling you to call her. As my British friends would say, your a star. :thumbsup2:love::cloud9:princess:

I know my kids will have that fortitude, but I can't trust my siblings, so I will not take my phone out of airplane mode, except to send photo texts. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2
