1200 pics, 1100 miles, 15 deluxe dining meals, 1 great time at POR *Completed 9/5*

Awww I hate the last day! :( The only thing that keeps me going is knowing I WILL be back. :)

Just wondering, why didn't they give you the credits back instead of giving you money? Seems they would have just done that.

I love DTD but, man o man what a mess. I know it's for a good cause and it will be worth it though. Hopefully they will at least have the parking garage done by the time we go back in December.

I have yet to go to AoA either. I might have to take a side trip over and check it out myself.

Yes, the dreaded last day. It just seemed like it went by so fast!

I have no idea why they wouldn't just return the meal credits. I don't know how all of that got so screwed up, but it was very frustrating and kind of dampened our last day.

I'm really excited about what will become Disney Springs! I'm sure the "growing pains" they are experiencing now will all be worth it in the next 3-4 years...but it sure is a mess right now. Hope they'll have better parking on your December trip.

You should definitely try to swing by Art of Animation Resort! The attention to detail in the four themed areas is just amazing!

It was about 11:30am on Thursday, June 5 when we arrived at Disney's Hollywood Studios. We had a lunch reservation at Sci-Fi at 12:10pm.

We had hoped to ride the Great Movie Ride before lunch, but we didn't want to be late for our reservation so we didn't get to ride.

It was SOOO HOT that day! We stepped inside the ABC Commissary just to be in the air conditioning for a few minutes....

...then we made our way on over to the Sci-Fi Theatre Restaurant. It was about 11:50am. I went to check us in but wasn't allowed to because they were still finishing up their special Star Wars breakfast until noon.

Several of us who had reservations stood outside the doors in the heat and the Sci-Fi employees were quite rude to everyone. :sad2: Finally, at about 12:15pm they started letting people in the doors to come to the check-in counter, but only one representative per party. We had been sitting there for about 25 minutes in the heat and now I was in a long line to check-in while the rest of the family were still sitting in the heat. It was all very disorganized and it put all of us in a bad mood. We were super hot and becoming impatient. Finally we were seated at about 12:25pm.

Once we were seated, everything got much better. It felt nice to be inside out of the Central Florida June heat. This was our second visit to Sci-Fi and I love the atmosphere!

Coming up next: a ridiculous amount of pictures from Sci-Fi! popcorn::

What an odd way of handling the double charging of dining credits. You'd think that they'd rather give you the credits back and hope that you didn't use it (thus, Disney keeping your $) At least you found out about the credits before you showed up at the restaurants and tried to use them.

I wonder if it was a pain to change the restaurant from Sci-Fi Star Wars to Sci-Fi "Normal" thus the grumbling castmembers? Even still, they shouldn't have shown it to the guests.

And now...for your viewing pleasure...one full chapter of nothing but pictures from the Sci-Fi Theatre Restaurant so you can get the full experience! Enjoy!

Coming up next: our lunch at Sci-Fi!

It sounds like the first part of your day got off to bad start! What a bummer!

We are staying in AoA in November and I can't wait to see everything. I just hope my kids will be just as excited.

I'm hoping the 2nd half of your day turned out better!

We ate at Sci Fi our last trip. The day before we ate there we ate at CRT. While I was eating one of the best steaks I had at Disney I thought this food is 5 times better than CRT. I will never again spend 2 dining credits on CRT unless I have little girls who love princesses :rotfl: .

It really was a great trip! If I had to do it over again, I would add one more night. This trip just seemed to go by too fast.

Even though I've had a couple of trips that went 12 nights, no matter how long my trip is, I always seem to think what else I could have fit in if only I had one more day. I think this would happen with just about any trip length!

You probably could have insisted that they give you back your dining credits instead of the refund. I'm guessing you didn't want to make a big deal out of it. But you would have been within your rights to get what you originally agreed to.

It seems they should have arranged to let people wait indoors at Sci Fi, when it was so hot out. Even if you would have seen their Star Wars setup!

We experienced the same kind of thing at Sci-Fi except we had a later lunch so we didn't have to wait to check in. They only allowed one person to go in and check you in and then you waited outside in the heat and it was quite hot. Maybe they should expand their waiting area a bit. Once inside everything was great tho. Looks like a fantastic lunch.

That really stinks that y'all had to wait in the heat for so long. And the CM rudeness....uncalled for. :(

I have only eaten at SciFi once and that was years ago. I am in no hurry to go back. I know the place is about the theme but, I was not too impressed. I do however love your pictures. The cars in there are really cool. I hope you enjoyed your lunch!

I know...I thought that was incredibly bizarre. I didn't even really ask why it was handled that way. At least they owed ME money instead of me owing them...so I guess I figured I would leave well enough alone.

I think it was a pain for Sci-Fi to transition from the Star Wars event to being the regular restaurant. A lot of the Star Wars fans stayed a long time getting pictures and autographs, and I don't blame them....they paid for that privilege. I just wish the staff would have handled the situation better. Another issue is that they have a ton of 'walk-ups' at Sci-Fi and they have to turn away hordes of people.

Nice view from your car!

It was a great view! We were very happy with where we were seated.

It sounds like the first part of your day got off to bad start! What a bummer!

Yeah it really did. It's hard enough knowing you have to leave Disney World, but even tougher having issues on the last day. I felt like getting those dining credits taken away really effected my attitude on this day. That, and the heat.

How old are your kids? They will LOVE AoA!!! I honestly think they could put in a few 'rides' for kids and charge more for the rooms. That place is like a miniature amusement park! So much fun!

Yes I agree. DW and DD ate at CRT in 2008. DD loved having the 'princess' experience but they were both underwhelmed by the food. Sci-Fi is far from being 'fine dining' but I've been happy with my food both times I've eaten there.

Even though I've had a couple of trips that went 12 nights, no matter how long my trip is, I always seem to think what else I could have fit in if only I had one more day. I think this would happen with just about any trip length!

Hahahaha that is so true! No trip to Disney World is ever long enough I suppose!

Yes, you are right, I really didn't want to make a big deal out of the dining credits. In the back of my mind I was thinking about the monetary refund and thinking about what we would order at our remaining restaurants. I figured we could make some minor alterations and it would all work out.

The space just inside the front entrance of Sci-Fi is pretty small, and completely walled off from the dining area. I think they were afraid that the space would get really crowded really quick, which it probably would have. What I didn't know then that I know now is that Sci-Fi and the ABC Commissary are connected and actually share bathrooms in between them. If I were faced with this situation again, I would just wait in the ABC.

We experienced the same kind of thing at Sci-Fi except we had a later lunch so we didn't have to wait to check in. They only allowed one person to go in and check you in and then you waited outside in the heat and it was quite hot. Maybe they should expand their waiting area a bit. I agree 100%...they really should expand that check-in area. When we ate there back in 2009 I remember them being a bit rude at check-in back then also. Once you get seated everything is great.

In retrospect, we should have ridden the Great Movie Ride first...but we were trying to stay with our precedent of being a bit early for ADRs. I had sort of forgotten about the Star Wars event being held earlier.

I really love the theme and the experience, but like you said I'm not really in a hurry to go back. I've had the experience, I enjoyed the experience, but we will probably try a different experience on our next trip.

Sorry to hear the dining credits got messed up and that your check in to Sci-fi wasn't that great either. They really need a better plan than just making you wait outside.

I'm eagerly awaiting to hear what you thought of the food though. Sci-fi was the only request my fiancée had when making our honeymoon reservations. He's so into those old Sci-fi movies. It at least looks really cool and nicely themed inside. Hope the food improved the experience for you guys.

Lord how I hated that mess at DTD! I can't wait until they are done with that.

We went and saw Art of Animation last year. Although I could never stay there, they really did a great job with it...it's really cute.

UGH on the wait to check in for your Sci Fi ADR and the rudeness of the Cast Members. We go to Sci Fi often, and I have found those CM's at check in to not be the brightest or the friendliest on the planet.

Can't wait to hear how lunch was.

It was lunchtime on Thursday, June 5th. After a long wait in the hot sun, we were sort of zapped of our energy and everyone was getting a little ill. For me, a bit of that "it's our last day at Disney World" realization was setting in. But once we were seated we were enjoying Sci-Fi. Our server was George and he was okay. He was a little bit slow but overall I think he did a good job.

For our appetizers, DD and I both ordered the Onion Rings:

You can't go wrong here. Delicious and a generous portion. I think onion rings and Sci-Fi go together like peas and carrots.

DW ordered the Spinach and Artichoke dip:

She had ordered this the last time we ate here and really enjoyed it. She enjoyed again this time as well. Very tasty!

DS ordered the Chicken Wings: (sorry for the blurry picture...it's tough to get good food pics in the darkness of that dining room!)

They weren't anything special. He compared them to the chicken wings you can get at the Walmart deli.

For my entree, I got the St. Louis style ribs: (again, sorry for the poor pics...they really weren't that dark, just poor lighting)

They were good. On par with what you might expect at a Chili's or something like that. The beans were nothing special but the slaw was really good.

DW got the NY Strip Steak with Blue Cheese Butter:

This was excellent! The steak was cooked just right and that butter made the steak so tasty! I was jealous! I wish I had ordered this!

DS ordered the Smoked Turkey Sandwich:

I don't remember if he liked it or not.

DD ordered the Famous All-American Picnic Burger:

I won't really give a review here because DD was starting to feel really bad. The heat had made her nauseous and she had lost her appetite. She excused herself from the table...and returned to tell us that she had indeed gotten sick. DD has a bit of a compromised immune system anyway and I could tell that she just wasn't feeling well. All of the excitement and the exhaustion of the past several days had caught up with her. Needless to say, she didn't order dessert. I didn't either. In fact, now I was starting to feel bad also. I excused myself from the table. Meanwhile, DS and DW didn't know what was going on so they ordered their dessert. They both got the Turtle Cheesecake:

By the time DD and I both got back to the table, neither of us were feeling well. We asked George for our check and had to wait on that for awhile. :rolleyes2

Here was the plan for the rest of this day: we had a FastPass+ for Toy Story Mania at 2:10pm, Tower of Terror at 3:10pm, and Star Tours at 4:10pm. We had dinner reservations at Sanaa at 6pm. After dinner we were going to drive North on I-75 for a few hours, get a hotel for the night, then drive on home Friday morning.

George finally brings the check and I see that we now have zero dining credits left.

I assessed the situation and then made a suggestion. I said, "since we have no dining credits left for dinner, we could just go ahead and leave now and we would be home and in our own beds late tonight." They all agreed. We were missing our sweet fur-babies back home and everyone knows there's no place like home when you're not feeling well. However, we all really wanted to do Toy Story since we had not ridden on this trip. Also, we still had several snack credits left to spend.

We decided to stick around until after we got in our ride on Toy Story.

Coming up next: our final few attractions, spending our snack credits, and saying goodbye to Disney World for this year.

Yes, I told DW that the check-in at Sci-Fi really needs to be better organized. In spite of a rough and long check-in, once you're seated it is really a neat experience! Your fiancee is going to LOVE it! Those old movie trailers are absolutely hilarious to watch! Sci-Fi is as much of an attraction as it is a restaurant. I definitely recommend the NY Strip!

Lord how I hated that mess at DTD! I can't wait until they are done with that.

Hi Kathy! :wave2:
Yeah me too. I know there has to be "growing pains" but DTD was just a mess. I can't wait to go back in a few years when it is Disney Springs! And I'm really looking forward to eventually experiencing the Avatarland at Animal Kingdom as well.

Isn't the theming at AoA adorable? DW and I stayed at Pop Century for a couple of nights in 2012 on a business trip and AoA had just opened. I walked across the bridge that connects the two resorts and took a ton of pictures. It was like discovering a new world! DD enjoyed getting to see it.

Yeah, that is well said about the CM's at the check out at Sci-Fi. They just seem like they are so disorganized. I know they get a ton of walk-ups, but it doesn't seem like you get any real special treatment for having ADRs either.

I just posted the lunch review!

LOVE Sci Fi's onion rings. I've learned to stick with the basics at Sci Fi or otherwise I'm disappointed (think seafood pasta a couple of years ago ).

I'm sorry you and DD were not feeling great. The heat can do that to you.

That's another thing about Sci Fi...service can be really slow.

Looking forward to your last attraction before you head home.

It took me a while but I'm finally caught up. I kind of felt bad when you said that the dreaded day of June 5th had come because that was the day when I got super excited that we were within 10 days of leaving which meant I could start stalking the weather channel for Orlando forecasts! :woohoo:

That stuff about your meal credits is crazy but maybe it was meant to be. After all, you may not of had the ability to sleep in your own bed that night otherwise. Did they make you pay the ADR cancellation fee? I would hope that they would waive it for you since you had the issue with the credits and were now going to have to pay out of pocket for it.

I'm so sorry you guys got sick on the last day. That heat can really drain you and put everyone in a miserable mood, especially when you are hungry. I hope you both got to feeling a little better before you got on TSMM.

It was about 1:15pm on Thursday, June 5 when we left Sci-Fi. We had about an hour before our FP+ for Toy Story Mania, so we headed over to see the Muppets 3D...

We literally walked right in, got our glasses, then entered the theatre...no waiting!

After the muppets DD and I were both feeling a little better after sitting in that nicely air conditioned theatre. We still had some time so we went over to Star Tours and rode...

Afterwards we started walking back towards the center of the park. DS and DD still had a few snack credits left so they visited the candy store on Hollywood Blvd.

It was finally time for our FastPass for Toy Story Midway Mania!

DS and I competed with each other...he beat me by a very narrow margin! Too bad we didn't have time for a rematch!

Alas, we had now ridden our last ride for this Disney World vacation. It was now time to go back out into the hot outdoors.

We've noticed big movie posters each year advertising Disney's big upcoming movies. In 2008, it was Wall-E. In 2009, it was UP! This year it was...

We had only two snack credits left. It was so hot that DS and DD used them on ice cold sodas. With sodas in tow, we headed out...saying goodbye to Disney World until next time. :sad1:

We got on the road around 3pm. DW called Disney Dining and cancelled our dinner reservation at Sanaa. We were told that there would be a $10 per person cancellation fee charged to our credit card we used to make the reservation. (I figured that was still cheaper than getting a hotel room on the road for the night.) I understand why they do this...it's to keep people from making reservations and not showing up at all....but it would seem that if you're giving a good three hour notice that you're not coming they may give you some leeway. Otherwise why would people bother calling at all! That being said, they never charged our card for the cancellation. Thank you Disney Dining or Sanaa or whomever!

I had filled our gas tank the night before, so we drove hard and didn't stop again until dinner.

We were sort of between bigger cities when we starting getting hungry and low on gas. I don't remember the name of the city in Georgia where we stopped, but there was a Shoney's there so that's what we had for dinner. After that it was on the road again.

We made it home just before midnight and got to sleep in our own beds. These two babies were happy to see us! (This was taken the next day.)

We were sad that our trip was over but also glad to be back home again.

Thank you ALL for reading along! It has been a lot of fun writing this trip report and I look forward to our next Disney World adventure!

Coming up next....a few final thoughts and notes

I'm glad they didn't charge your credit card for the cancelled adr. When someone isn't feeling well, you would think they could be a bit more forgiving. You gave plenty of notice and now they could take a walk up.

Those onion rings at Sci-Fi are so yummy! DW's steak looks pretty tasty, too.

Really great trip report! Looking forward to your final thoughts.

For a minute there I thought your ribs were burnt :rotfl: I also got the same thing as your wife and was surprised at how good the steak was.
Anyway thanks for sharing your trip with us, I really enjoyed all of it :thumbsup2
