We're watching youtube videos via Chromecast getting ready for our trip in july. Soarin' has always been a must do for us. This will be the first time seeing the updated Soarin' Around the World.

I know the transitions are CGI. Are most of the details in the scenes CGI too? Maybe I'm naive. But I don't remember a lot of CGI in the original.

1. I know the transitions are CGI.
2. Are most of the details in the scenes CGI too? Maybe I'm naive. But
3. I don't remember a lot of CGI in the original.

1. Yes.
2. I'd not necessarily say, "most." But, a LOT of the images are at least "CGI enhanced."
3. Not overwhelming, but the golf ball was added. So was the hang glider.
I'd call the effects in the first version more "compositing" than "CGI."

(And, yes, the use of CGI in the current version is "overuse," in my opinion.)

There was some cgi in the first film, but it was much more limited. (Like the golf ball flying at your face) The original film is close to 20 years old. Technology has come so far in that time span.

mixed bag of reviews with the new Soarin.
I am in the camp that I don't enjoy it as much as the original. All animals are CGI and the entire Taj Mahal scene.
To me the original just felt more real, I guess, because it was

Soarin' is my favorite ride. My only complaint about it is the distortion when you sit on the sides of the theatre. I have no idea if that distortion was a problem with the old version--it seems I always lucked out and was queued to the middle, but the second time we did the new version, we were placed on the side and the distortion was distracting and significant. Still worth doing, but not the experience we were used to.

I don't remember the distortion being nearly as bad with the old version, and we went on that one a lot! The new one is horrible for distortion unless you sit in the middle .

I've said it before and I"ll say it again....I hate that hawk or eagle or falcon...or whatever pterodactyl shrieking transition that is! ...not good with the small plane either. ...but hate the bird.

I don't like the new Soarin as much as the old one. It looks way too computer generated to me in a lot of places. Soarin used to be my favorite Disney ride...not so any more. I still like it, but wouldn't be terribly disappointed if I had to miss it for some reason.

Not a fan of the new one. The original had heart and seemed to connect you with humans in most scenes. The new one doesn't do that. Plus it is way too haphazard and is quite fake looking in many places. You might not notice it the first time you ride, but after a re-ride or two you begin to notice how fake the Taj Mahal looks, or how pretty much every scene has to have some unnecessary "gotcha" in-your face transition.

We liked the old Soarin', but liked the new one even better. Because it's not limited to California, the sights are more impressive. The screen quality is better, too.

I did love the original and when i found out it was going to be partly CGI i was a little worried, but i think the way they did it was so well done and very beautiful :)

I didn't notice the CGI in the original or the new version, however, I can't get around the screen distortion. We have tried it twice and it was so distracting that I'm not even sure if the wait was 10 min. if we would ride it again. We loved the original, the current one doesn't seem to be as interactive either, I miss the smell of oranges.

I feel the same way. Even when I'm in the middle section but on the end the distortion is so bad I'm not sure if I'll bother with it next trip. How curved does the Eiffel Tower need to be before it looks like crap?

I personally miss the California film. That is because there is too much CGI in this film. Two of the locations are CGI in this film, and the transitions are all CGI. I miss the "real" factor that the California film had.

I was shocked at how bad the distortion was. I read the bad reviews but this is Disney. They make movies. It's what they do! I can't believe how badly they screwed it up. IMAX is not new technology - screen curvature should be a pretty basic thing to get right.

My husband wasn't bothered but he'll watch TV with the aspect ratios screwed up too which is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

But my kids love it and parts of the movie are fun. The ride itself is good so I hope Disney does a new movie or changes the screen in the not too distant future.

I like the original because I'm from California, but the new one is quite nice, and I had no idea anything was CGI until someone told me.
