A little r/churning observation in light of the recent change to ban flair outside of preselected choices - namely IATA airport codes and 5/24 counts. (you can only have 2 pieces of flair and it can be any combination of the two it looks like. hence a little office space humor about counting pieces of flair :)) The point of it was to eliminate the "Referrals in profile" type flair that the sub voted for. Rather than just turn flair off entirely, at the urging of some in the sub, the mods came up with this compromise so that people can see location information.

It's kind of fun to see the different combinations of airport codes you can get creative with. Of course FAT popped up a bit yesterday, I think one was FAT BOY. The one I think that is going to get the most play in the long run is Fukuoka, I see many people moving to Japan at various points :p (to save you the lookup, the IATA code is indeed FUK, and as we know reddit does not subscribe to the same G rated language we tend to keep on the thread here, hehe)
In fact, I see someone already commutes between Fukuoka and NC's Pine Island Airport, aka DUF... coincidentally, I'm sure, also the shortened username of one of the mods on the sub :rolleyes1

Some other fun ones I liked:

CIP PLZ
ERN BRN
LAZ BOY
EAT PIE
DIP SHT (side note, little sad that's "taken" already, I'd have probably considered it)
TPG SUX

and a couple others that may stray from G ratings :) But it only took a couple of hours for someone to find this combination -

RFR ALL

and just like that the plan shatters...

LOVE this. I have nothing to do at work today, so I'm off to be as juvenile about this as possible.

Lots of talk of MS strategies. I don’t really read much of it because that’s not my thing.

I was mostly being tongue-in-cheek. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen. I'm impressed there's legit stuff being discussed there.

We are go to Disney World April 2019..YEA!!...quick question. If I use Chase UR's connected to my Chase Sapphire Preferred for my car rental Does that carry insurance like the Sapphire Card itself does?

Ho. Ly. Crap. My mother would have been livid. And had I responded like that my parents would have shattered my world, I guarantee it. I do not envy your place right now.
Unfortunately, due to where we live, she resides in a bubble of wealth. I have tried hard to keep her feet grounded in reality and responsibility but it is a constant battle because everyone she knows is handed everything on a silver platter. I have at least been somewhat successful because on a rare occasion I get a “I’m so thankful you raised me how you did” text with a picture off social media of someone she knows being totally obnoxious about whatever bmw they have been recently gifted that they believe should have been red instead of white (for example.) Then three days later I’m an awful mom because I won’t replace a Patagonia jacket that is less than a year old and has disappeared.
...I focus on the small victories. Too bad The infancy stage isn’t longer and the teen stage much shorter.

Hahaha! TBH I'd say that shows some great success, because of that you know deep down she does have a foundation and the right perspective on everything, even if it gets brushed aside in those annoyed teenage moments :)

Quick question: We need two rooms for a stop on a roadtrip to Canada next week. I found a Fairfield Inn with good reviews. I am torn on how to pay for it! Cash rate through Marriott for both is $210 and I also have a $40 off $200 @ Fairfield offer on my Amex Gold, effectively bringing it down to $170 if I used it. The UR portal comes out to $215 or 14,360 UR's. I currently have Gold Elite but honestly we don't stay at hotels much so I don't know if it's worth getting 'credit' for the room.

Option 1: Use Amex and pay $170 cash, receive night credits, redeem 17k UR's as statement credit to offset
Option 2: Use UR's portal to book at only 14,360 points and get no credit. I assume that would mean no gold perks when we get there? Not that I think a Fairfield in podunk Moses Lake will be filled with amenities

Ugh! What would you do? I have this bad habit of collecting points but deeming things 'bad redemptions' and thus paying cash anyway when in reality I should just use my stinking points.

Yeah I kinda saw that one coming :) Not entirely sure how the mods didn't. It seems they made a cursory search, like JonLuca said they verified "REF" wasn't a code before making the site live "in case some users tried to skirt the rules", but I guess didn't really comb through the 6000 codes for alternatives (go figure). I also like the "in case" someone tries to skirt the rules... um... yeah... that totally wasn't anyone's plan to find the loophole... nope.
And yet nobody realizes that this is all an effort to make a mockery of banning "Referrals in Profile" flair. That never should have gone to a vote...The vote was a joke because I know people were voting multiple times. Either make the change or don't... AND the fact that they think that flair was causing issues in the community speaks volumes to how they plan to "fix things". Flair has nothing to do with how idiotic that place has become. Ok, nuff said, lol!

There are some further underground groups of like <25. That's where the real discussions happen. They talk about some crazy MS Stuff that I can't even comprehend. But they keep me around because apparently they like me, lol.

I assume you don't have Marriott points to pay for this? (Out of curiosity, how many Marriott points does it require per night?)

I have learned about so many airport codes this morning... Alas for all our Fukuoka airport peeps out there it looks like you've been banned :rotfl2:

Drat, that could have come in handy. I can't imagine it has anything to do with that commuter between Fukuoka and NC I mentioned earlier. Now I'll have to go check back in to get the scoop :)

Well one confession deserves another I guess, I confess, I did it
I did a couple on the first day cuz you know, flaw meet exploit, however I voted against the ban as it's just silly. But apparently it was like spitting in the ocean. Even if I could have remembered a few more passwords to some old gmail accounts it still wouldn't have made a difference. But I tried.

My dd18 is living at home for her first year of college. I don't regret it a bit. She is growing and maturing in leaps and bounds even while living at home. We treat her like an adult and she acts like one.
Going away for school and getting out on my own was a very good thing for me. But all of my 'failure to launch' friends lived at home... I think the difference is they were never treated like adults! No responsibilities, no expectations... I was treated like an adult and expected to contribute to things at the end of high school and when home from college. Your DD sounds like she is off to a great start and you all have a much better dynamic going than my friends.

I used to work in family law and saw some extremely sad cases as far as finances go. One poor woman found out that her home was being foreclosed on after her neighbor showed her the notice in the local newspaper. She had been relying on her husband to mail the mortgage check each month. Little did she know that he was not mailing the check and then was intercepting all of the notices about failure to pay since he was at home during the day. She was actually able to get a handle on things and not have the home foreclosed on, but obviously went ahead and filed for divorce as well.
:scared:
I always worry I will stumble upon something like this involving my dad.

I peg Marriott rewards points at 0.7cpp so 25k = $175 LOL. Sorry - I have not helped now. I’ve only added options to your list LOL!!

No! You added an option! Not acceptable! :teeth:. [side note: you've opened Pandoras box with that suggestion.] My other reasoning for wanting to keep those Marriott points untouched was that we (me. It's only me.) are waffling on our hotel choice for Maui over spring break. I have a 7 night cert that has a surrender value of 115k (if Marriott is even still offering that). I think we decided to maybe only do 5 nights on Maui and island hop over to Oahu to do 3 nights at Aulani (because we are spoiled). So *if* Marriott lets me cancel my cert and refund me the 115k then i'll have about 220k points to work with and maybe we can stay at a little nicer of a place. :scratchin

Currently we are booked here for 140k/5 nights: Residence Inn (free daily breakfast, kitchenette, bigger room, no resort fee, parking 25/night) https://tinyurl.com/yc2a43ry

But considering this for 200k/5 nights : Wailea Beach Resort ( A resort with a fee of $35 :scared: in addition to the parking fee of 25/day). But it's just so pretty.... https://tinyurl.com/y7jv8kw6

Man, when I type it out it doesn't make much sense to change anything. For 7 people and 2 rooms that daily breakfast will add up to some savings, not to mention the $350 in resort fees plus 60k more points.

Hi, I am linzjane88. I have been chronically vacationing and not present in any meaningful way to this thread in like a month but now would like everyone to help me decide on my travel plans :rotfl2:

Let me add another option to your list ;), Ebates has 10% cash back on Marriott bookings today. Get $21 back thru Ebates for Fairfield Inn, use your $40 off $200 Amex offer, and reimburse yourself 14900 URs (if you need to help yourself feel like it was free) and get whatever gold perks you're entitled to.

Fun story time.

Now, I personally have no interest in flying first class. Back when I was flying United a lot more and earned status with them, I was upgraded to business class a few times. It's nice. But I'm an economy guy. I prefer to stretch out my points and miles and don't mind suffering coach seats for an hour, five hours, or even twelve hours. But apparently, my ladies are quite taken by first class travel.

I think we'll have a reverse @calypso726 situation where I voluntarily sit in coach while my ladies are up in first.

As for Cameron Diaz's character in The Holiday, I doubt she booked her flight with miles but you never know.

Just wanted to comment that although I would LOVE to fly first class on a long trip (if that ever happens! not in any immediate future due to kiddos and costs), it would be difficult to justify it to myself because I feel like I'd be being wasteful, like I could go to Hawaii twice using the same points instead of once in first class. Maybe because I just don't have that many points that I just hate to part with them? Plus when you multiple the cost times 4 or 5 (2 adults and 2-3 kiddos), it's just really difficult to justify. BTW the 3'rd kiddo is my 20 year old DS who doesn't vacation much with us anymore. Although if we planned a trip to Hawaii that might change! :-)

Brain not fully functioning this month, I bought my husband the exact same gift from 2 different places, it was small and something we'll likely use and enjoy having 2 of, but still how did I overlook that in my Black Friday shopping?! Anyway, I don't want to screw this up:

Approved for SW Plus 11/21
I have a pmt due date for the fee of 1/2

So, I'm good to go on the spend now, correct? My statement is going to close after 1/2 and so points will post in 2019. Then, when is he safe to app for Sw Biz? Should I hold off until Jan or is after 12/21 okay?

Good to churn? My first real churn. Still dreaming of Hawaii and I think 2 CPs are going to be very helpful.

DH asked me if there's a MSR card he should be putting spend on. I told him his new CSP isn't here yet, but don't worry about it, I'll take care of it. He was like what are you buying?? Well, $2000 PNC savings funding (already did the checking), $1600 Wyndham timeshare maintenance fee (2x travel), $400 kids winter camp/ski lessons. Done! Nothing I wasn't going to charge anyways, except the PNC but that hardly counts.
