If the flattening isn't working is it time to face reality?

I don't think Cuomo is going to lift anything even if the Feds say it's OK to do so.
If he does then he better lock down NYC, nobody out or in, we don't want more of it upstate.
I have friends and relatives on Long Island. They are helping their elderly leave because it is everywhere. I have one subset of our family that lives in NYC - they left a week ago Sunday. I think that this is what is going to happen - people are going to start leaving.

That's what worries me. Are we expected to stay in this "semi lockdown" state until a vaccine is available and out in the public in great numbers? Personally, I don't think we can wait until 2021 to get "back to normal". Do I think it should happen next week? No. But 2021 isn't realistic either.

It doesn’t have to be just a vaccine, although that would completely flip the whole situation and everyone can get back to life as it was before.

Even a SARS-COV-2 specific antiviral would turn things around in a hurry. It won’t take as long as a vacccine to be approved, but it still takes some time.

I’m sure we’ll see some form of rolling shutdown/relaxing of restrictions even without a vaccine or anti-viral at some point by the end of the year. I mean 2/3 of the country isn’t even in a shutdown yet.

And go where? It's going to be everywhere else too.

As I said earlier, they wouldn't be shutting things done if people listened to what they were told. The economy wouldn't be as affected if people avoided large gatherings as they were told. Having bars and restaurants limit the amount of people in them would have worked too. The problem was there a far too many idiots who invaded the beach and thought this virus is not a big deal.

Its funny how over in Europe and Asia, when their government tells their people they should stay home they listen. In the U.S. and Canada it feels that most don't want to be told what to do.

And quite possibly carry the virus with them to wherever they go. THAT is a problem.

That was never the plan. The plan was to spread out the illnesses as to not overwhelm hospitals, not wait for a vaccine. That's still the plan and not unreasonable to think can go on until May/June.

Somehow the narrative has changed - not by the doctors in charge but rather regular people on social media.
How many times I've said - Dr. Fauci said this virus should behave like other viruses (and he expects it will), and most will develop immunity and not be reinfected or get mild infections and the next season's wave should be more moderate in nature.
Yeah, this is insane. Its was just days ago everyone was on board with social distancing for a month or two. We go 1 week and people are panicking already.

It will be interesting to see whether we get a vaccine or here immunity first. That all depends on who’s calling the shots politically.

Herd immunity is typically achieved when about 65-70% of the population have been infected. By that time, we’ll have seen over 1 million dead, unfortunately, just in the US.

I think that we will have to get as bad as Italy before we decide.

Just going by what Dr. Fauci said. We have a good chance at a weaker wave next year due to immunity that's (hopefully) occurring as we type. Better shot with that than a vaccine being ready by then.

It has already happened. Why do you think NYSE went virtual. Those with 2nd/3rd/4th homes are already gone. Those with family close by are gone. Those that remain have no where to go. Just like they had no where to go during Sandy. Just like why DiBlasio wanted to keep NYPS open. There are millions of financially at risk with no means and where to go.

I heard towns upstate are starting to protest, they don't want their tiny hospitals overrun.
We have a camp that we plan on going to but we are withing a sort drive to home if anyone were to show symptoms.

I was thinking more of the commuters who would be going into the city then back home on the trains.

Assuming half the population gets it before then.

The Hamptons started complaining beginning of last week. Nantucket told summer people to stay home. Off season infrastructure can’t handle extra people of any sort in beach areas.
