Mickey Waffles Zero; Cucumbers are my Heroes! A September AND December 2020 Dining Report *Festival of the Holidays 1/31*

Yay, so happy to see so many "old" faces and always love seeing new ones! I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend and isn't having to harsh of a Monday :coffee: And now let's get on with what you all came for - Disney Food!

To start I'll go over a quick "why are we here" rundown. Like we need a reason though right? Well, originally we were supposed to be taking our son, DIL and DGD2 with us for DIL and DGD's first visit to Disney and we were over the moon excited. We were coming from Sept. 21-28 and would be there for Steve's birthday on the 23rd. However when...."things" happened and changed it was decided that we'd wait on their first trip sadly. I still think it's a great experience now for first timers but my granddaughter will NOT wear a mask. Here in NY at 2 she doesn't have to and they haven't been successful practicing so we're hoping for next year.

But, given that Steve wanted to celebrate down there and that our good friends Jenny and Joe were going, there was no need to cancel! We just shortened our trip to the 22-27th and of course, where we were eating definitely changed.

Speaking of eating, those of you who have followed my reports before know that not only do Steve and I often change up our plans last minute, we also often don't make that many dining reservations ahead of time unless the kids are with us. While this is still true we did learn on our first post-COVID trip in July that with limited restaurants open it's better to have something booked and cancel than to not book anything. Therefore knowing there was a chance we'd miss it with our flight arriving at 5:30, we made a 7:45 reservation at a "new to us" restaurant in DS:

530100

That's Terralina Crafted Italian to be exact. We were staying at BRV (or so we thought) and originally figured we'd arrive and hit Geyser Point, but I was concerned it would be crowded and we wouldn't get in. I also knew we'd be hangry and having a TS was our best bet. Of course we love Italian - last name DeVizio, we have to - and wanted to see how this measured up to our favorite Disney Italian restaurant Il Mulino.

We had our choice of sitting inside or out as they have a nice # of tables on the patio. We are fine eating indoors but it was a gorgeous night so we chose outside by the water. Besides their regular menu, the Orlando Magical Dining was/is going on so we got that menu as well:

530103

We got these in a couple DS restaurants and the offerings are all regular menu items at a great price. We walked by STK and their price was also 30-something per person! I just wonder where those steaks come from lol.

We started, as one should, with our adult beverages. Steve got a Moscow Mule; I was kind of feeling something different. Not in the mood for wine or sangria I chose a cocktail that sounded interesting:

Twisted Gimlet
Stoli Blueberry Vodka, Malfy Gin, Mint, Cucumber, Lime

530104

No copper mug for Steve and that's mine with the cuke in it so here comes the reason for the 2nd part of my report title 🥒
I've always wanted to try a drink with cucumber in it but the other ingredients don't usually sound like combinations I'd like, until now. I wasn't sure about the gin and I also don't generally like mint in my drinks so it was iffy at best. The blueberry vodka and cucumber just drew me in and BOY am I glad they did! This drink was outstanding! So light and refreshing! Not sweet like I usually do but that was fine as well, this went down super easy; too easy lol. I was ordering my 2nd before we had our apps! I was determined to find any cucumber drink on any menu at any venue we ate or drank at for the rest of the trip. While I was hoping for more than I found I did find some real winners and can say with confidence that any fine cucumber beverage has now replaced sangria as my go-to. My heroes 🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒

On to food! There was so much on the menu it was hard to choose but it definitely meant we need to get apps. Steve went with the

Mozzarella-stuffed Rice Balls
Tomato-Basil Sauce

and I got the

Burrata
Tomato jam, Smoked Sea Salt, Arugula, Lemon and Thyme

530107

530108

Those rice balls were exquisitely creamy :goodvibes I didn't want to eat too much of that since I had my own app and a big entree coming too! I couldn't leave one bit of my burrata though; now that was like butter. I am a huge burrata fan and have found some delicious ones in Disney including at WBG and Flying Fish. This was just as good as WBG and almost as good as the one at FF (please reopen Flying Fish Disney, please!) Tomato jam makes me a little nervous but this was perfectly tomatoey, not too sweet or acidy. I saved the arugula and mailed it to my good friend Kari @kastoney who loves it while I find it gross. You should be getting that package any day now!

Entrees! Oh but let me say here that the time between courses was perfect. We finished our apps in plenty of time to be able to digest a bit before the entrees but didn't get to the point where we were saying "ok, where's our food?" And I do say that often. Our server James was also fantastic so if you go there and get James, you're good.

Steve loves pasta but also works in a restaurant 5 nights a week so he gets kind of pasta'd out. Not possible for me however so while he went with a non pasta dish I did not:

Catch of the Day-salmon with creamy polenta and arugula

Spaghetti Bolognese
Beef, Pork and Pancetta Meat Sauce, Tomato, Parmesan Cream

530165

530164

I can't remember what sauce is on the salmon and unfortunately Steve is at work but under that arugula was, as he said, a perfectly cooked delicious piece of salmon. I don't like polenta (or seafood) but he cleaned his plate and deemed it a successful order.

My bolognese, while seemingly simple, was definitely not! The pancetta I think made the sauce. I got full after eating just less than half of this and SO wanted to eat more! I ate as much as I could. washing down those refreshing Twisted Gimlets as I went.

Steve said he liked this as much if not more than Il Mulino; I don't know and think right now they're tied. I'll eat once more at Il Mulino since it's been about 10 months and decide then 🤔 We've eaten at all the other Italian restaurants in Disney, parks and otherwise, and definitely feel both Terralina and Il Mulino are way above the others. I wanted to try dessert but was so full I settled for a cappuccino which you all probably have seen before.

To add for anyone that hasn't yet been to Disney post-COVID: this was our 2nd time down and it was more crowded. Not "too" crowded in my opinion but the July and early August no crowds and walk on rides are over, and that's a good thing because it means people are traveling. It means people like and are comfortable with what they saw Disney doing. It means hopefully Disney continues adding more and more offerings that are closed and hopefully there is not another mass layoff.

We were comfortable in DS on this Tuesday night as well as on the bus back. Terralina was practicing physical distancing on their terrace as well as inside.-

We left around 9:30 and most everything was closed that we passed on our way back to the bus except for a few stores. Terralina was open until 9; Paddlefish next door we were told by James seated until 8 during the week. Upon returning to our resort we actually switched resorts in a way which is a longish story I'll recap when I start my Sept. TR, but here is the lovely view from our CCV studio:

530166

Peaceful! This is the Boulder Ridge or "quiet" pool and as you see there's a lone swimmer in there. This was around 10:30 and the quiet pool was open until 11 while the main pool closed at 9 just FYI. We pretty much went right to sleep without unpacking much, we didn't have an early morning call but did have a day of food to look forward to as well as seeing our friends Jenny and Joe again!

Before I go I'll share that my newfound love for all drinks cucumber has followed me home like a Happy Haunt! Saturday night Steve and I went out to eat and instead of my go-to drink here I got this, with vodka:

The Secret Garden
Vodka or gin, cucumber, basil, ginger, lemon

530167

And then yesterday morning I went to brunch with my BFF and got this cucumber watermelon wine spritzer!

530168

Still can't believe how light and refreshing all these cuke drinks are and that I'm just discovering them!
Keep following along as we discover some Taste of Epcot snacks and beverages next!

Looking forward to all the details! Only 322 days until I can have Disney deliciousness again. :)
Ugh that's too high a number! Let's just cross fingers it doesn't go up. The good thing is that by then, all the wonderful restaurants should (PLEASE) be open again!
You got me when you mentioned "Mickey waffles". I heard they are not as good as they were pre-covid. I sure hope that isn't true! :worried:
Hey, thank you for coming over  Funny because that thread here was started shortly after we returned from our July trip on which we also had Mickey waffles and I was like, "hmmm". Luckily we have them our first morning so you'll get my version of the answer soon! These always need to be good because what's a trip without Mickey waffles???
Hiya I'm here for the craic and hoping it's mighty! Given that there were birthday celebrations and Jenny it's a sure thing right! :rotfl::thumbsup2
Hey Moira :wave2: Jenny was a very good girl lol but the beverages were definitely flowing as were the laughs!
Following along! :hyper:
Yay hi Raeven! Really happy to see you here :goodvibes
What gives? Are you in some sort of DIS witness protection program?
Um :rotfl2:People in the Witness Protection Program can't give themselves away :rotfl:Let's just say........if the situation in question were a nail, you may have hit it right on the head!
BTW I can't wait to hear where the title of this DR came from!
I had some other titles that involved cucumbers as contenders but @pepperandchips who will also be in this report kind of set me straight with those :rolleyes1 When you're in hiding being conspicuous isn't the best thing to do but I'm not that great at hiding lol!
I’m in!
Yay! Hello and :welcome:to another of my reports! I hope you enjoy this one and thank you for finding me!!

Joining in! I love cucumber drinks. The one you had at dinner and the brunch one, sound delightful.
I love Italian food, if my husband Joe traveled with me and not Andi, we would be hitting the nice Italian places! Both of us love a good Italian meal, yum!

Hey Caroline thank you for being here! I love finding new drinks I enjoy, it's nice to mix it up sometimes!
I love Italian food, if my husband Joe traveled with me and not Andi, we would be hitting the nice Italian places! Both of us love a good Italian meal, yum!
I could eat Italian every day! Over the years the boys have become less picky in what they'll east so we can expand where we eat in Disney, but there are still a few places we love that there isn't anything for Ricky like Citricos unfortunately. And Tiffins! So I feel you lol

Should know better than to read these kinds of updates when I'm starving and it is nowhere near lunchtime!!!

Also, I love cucumbers in my water, but have never tried them in a cocktail, so now you've got me all intrigued! Everything you've mentioned sounds SO refreshing, especially on a hot Disney day! Guess I'll have to get back there soon :)

The switch from BRV to CCV was a nice switch. We have a CCV studio booked for January and are looking forward to staying there. :)

Still can't believe how light and refreshing all these cuke drinks are and that I'm just discovering them!

I need to try one of these cucumber drinks since I don't really have an easy, go-to drink at Disney.

You can never go wrong with Italian. Dinner did look really good. I also like cucumber in my water but have never had it in a drink, may have to try that.

Yum...dinnner did look pretty good. We have only tried Maria and Enzos in DS, and of course we like both of the Italian restaurants in EPCOT and even Mama Melrose in Studios...and this includes the Italians in the family! I'm leaning towards Italian for the birthday dinner, but I still like I'd like to avoid DS if possible otherwise I'd give this place a try.

I'm going to have to revisit burratta now after your review and others here. I feel like we had it at Flying Fish once and it just didn't "wow" me like it sounds like here but now I feel I might be missing something.

Your cucumber drinks do sound delicious as well.

Sounds like a fabulous trip so far!

Should know better than to read these kinds of updates when I'm starving and it is nowhere near lunchtime!!!
Ha! Same about writing updates when you're hungry and it's not time to eat!
Also, I love cucumbers in my water, but have never tried them in a cocktail, so now you've got me all intrigued! Everything you've mentioned sounds SO refreshing, especially on a hot Disney day!
I was skeptical but I also like them in my water so figured they can't be bad in alcohol? Luckily I was right :thumbsup2
Guess I'll have to get back there soon :)
I think so ;)
The switch from BRV to CCV was a nice switch. We have a CCV studio booked for January and are looking forward to staying there. :)
It definitely was! Our first room at BRV was unfortunately not clean. I'm never ok with that but in these times even moreso. They gave us another one but I think I was already soured on it so when we returned from dinner I politely asked if there was any availability in CCV and luckily there was! We stayed there in 2018 and loved it so I knew we'd be happy.
I need to try one of these cucumber drinks since I don't really have an easy, go-to drink at Disney.
You should! None I had were overly sweet or tasted strongly of the alcohol in them.
You can never go wrong with Italian.
Correct! Oh and if you see this before you leave safe travels TOMORROW and I hope you have a truly magical time!
I also like cucumber in my water but have never had it in a drink, may have to try that.
And I hope you try one down there lol
We have only tried Maria and Enzos in DS,
We've eaten there once and did like it; we had it booked for last month too. Stayed tuned to see if we ate there :rolleyes1
I'm going to have to revisit burratta now after your review and others here. I feel like we had it at Flying Fish once and it just didn't "wow" me like it sounds like here but now I feel I might be missing something.
I've had some that was just "ok" but seriously all that I've had in Disney has been wonderful. Try it again! It's great at HBD as well if you go there

I had the same view a few weeks ago. It was a great room location just across from elevator.

Not in the mood for wine or sangria I chose a cocktail that sounded interesting:

530104

I love gin, and everything else , so this sounds fabulous!

No copper mug for Steve and that's mine with the cuke in it so here comes the reason for the 2nd part of my report title 🥒

A mule not in a copper mug?! How strange!

Mozzarella-stuffed Rice Balls

Yumm! can't go wrong with mozza and marinara

Beef, Pork and Pancetta Meat Sauce, Tomato, Parmesan Cream

I never order spaghetti out, but this sounds so good with pancetta and the parm cream!

The Secret Garden
Vodka or gin, cucumber, basil, ginger, lemon

530167

Yummm!! I'm a fan of basil (love pesto) so I think I'd like this!

I had the same view a few weeks ago. It was a great room location just across from elevator.
Cool! I remember you were going before us! Did you enjoy your stay there and your trip?
A mule not in a copper mug?! How strange!
Definitely strange! In general when he gets one not in a copper mug he scoffs but I think he was so happy to be away again he didn't care and he also didn't complain about the taste - because also when not in a copper mug he says it doesn't taste as good!
never order spaghetti out, but this sounds so good with pancetta and the parm cream!
You know what neither do I! I go with something less....boring lol? But while they had a good # of choices there were still some usual options not on there and I would have gone with one of those so that's why I went with this. So glad I did!
Yummm!! I'm a fan of basil (love pesto) so I think I'd like this!
The basil made it I think!

Let's get on with the show! The last couple days have been a little crazy; a little on the downer side; a little "eh". But then yesterday I got to see our granddaughter and when she gets excited to see her "Mams" (Grams) all is right with the world again! We're also going to visit Ricky at Quinnipiac again tomorrow and take him to dinner; I hope you all have fun plans for the weekend!
Our first full day was Steve's actual birthday, Sept. 23rd. I asked what park he wanted to go to and not surprisingly he picked Epcot, his favorite! I did not mind at all especially since we failed to hit Epcot on our July trip and we did want to try some of the festival booths.
But since the park didn't open till 11 there was no reason to rush and we had time to get dressed and have a little breakfast. Besides, what's a birthday without some
MICKEY WAFFLES?

531031

This is the only breakfast picture I have, sorry! We ordered your standard QS breakfast stuffs, I had the kids Mickey waffles with bacon and Steve got a bounty platter. It came out about 10 minutes after we ordered and while Steve waited I grabbed a table outside with this gorgeous view:

530986

My bacon was nice and crispy as it should have been; Steve's eggs were cold and runny. I love Disney eggs but his looked gross. It doesn't help that it's all served in those brown containers now. As for my waffles?

Have you guys read the thread here on the restaurants board about how they aren't good anymore? That was started after our July trip when I had them twice and when I saw the thread I thought "interesting. I thought the same". When I ordered these I was hoping for something better but sadly the negative reports on that thread are true. Not sure what it is but they are NOT the same. Four times I've gotten them now since reopening and they are always super hard on the outside and the weird thing is, pieces flake off. When you go to cut them it's really hard to do so.

The inside isn't terrible and is usually soft but the taste isn't the same; there isn't as MUCH taste unfortunately. So dry :( I hate saying this! I hate buying in to the rumor that they've changed the mix or whatever but something is definitely different. So there's the full reason for my report title, you can go home now lol!

Before we finished eating our dear friends Mr. & Mrs. @pepperandchips arrived via automobile for their stay at CCV! It had been way too long since we've seen each other so this was an added birthday surprise for Steve. While Mr. P went up to their room to being working Melinda came down to pick up their breakfast and we got to say hello. No pics yet but they're coming!

We were on a bus to Epcot and in the park before 11 and started with a ride on SE since the booths had a few minutes before opening. A little glimpse of our future:

531049

Although I hope by the time we wear space suits we don't have to wear masks with them!

First up was a stop at my absolute favorite booth,

531051

I was disappointed they did not have my favorite dessert, the , but they did have another favorite of Steve's from last year so we both ordered the Chimichurri-up Offense: : Charred Chimichurri Skirt Steak on a Smoked Corn Cake with Pickled Vegetable Slaw and Cilantro Aioli

And to drink Steve added the Bell’s Seasonal Beer, Comstock, MI

531052

And an up close:

531054

Ah that pickled slaw! If you get the corn cake, meat and slaw together in one bite you're in for a treat! The meat is so nicely charred and all these flavors work together perfectly. I would have loved a bit more aoli but the slaw keeps the dish from being dry anyway and the corn cake is fluffy and......moist :) I'm not a beer drinker but this one was good; not hoppy and had a hint of like a fruity flavor? Just a hint and Steve probably would think I was weird for saying that.

The park had not been open an hour yet and the cleaning was in full swing:

531055

As we left Steve went up and thanked the chef. This poor guy grilling with a mask in the heat! This was at noon and when we left at 5 the SAME guy was there. Being in the restaurant business Steve always says the guys in the kitchen don't get any thanks since it's the people out front who are seen who do.

531067

We headed right towards Canada and did a detour to watch the new Canada Far and Wide film. Partly because it was super hot already and partly because I'd heard it was good! We then continued our quest for food but nothing was calling to us. I'd read the menus ahead of time of course and knew a few of my faves hadn't made it but Steve wasn't feeling anything either. We finally chose the Festival Center right before the UK as our next stop:

531062

It was nice and cool in here and not too crowded yet. There are a few different "booths" including Festival Favorites with the Nitro Cake pops and then the one we hit w, Appleseed Orchard.

This was just a drink stop! I love my hard cider but instead of the flight I went straight to the larger size 3 Daughters Raspberry Lemonade Dry Hard Cider, St. Petersburg, FL and Steve got the Short’s Brewing Co. Mule Beer, Elk Rapids, MI because, Mule I guess.

531066

There are high top tables set up all throughout the building so we grabbed one, de-masked, and drank in comfort and coolness. My cider was deliciously not sour and tasted nothing like lemonade which I was happy about since I don't particularly like lemonade, but a huge lover of raspberry. Steve enjoyed his beer but this one for me tasted too much like a dark beer even though it wasn't.

We were not done eating and drinking yet! We were only near the UK! Next up we finish off a Taste of Epcot on our one and only Epcot day :goodvibes

Had a great split stay at CCV and Poly Villa....pools at both were mostly empty through the day. Hit all parks at rope drop and walked onto everything we wanted. Longest line was for the Leota Sipper cups!!! Missed the shows but loved the calvacades. Ate a few times at Geyser Point no problem getting a table and they also had carry-out. Food from Roaring fork was awful especially the waffles! We just threw them out after one bite...tried getting the waffles over at Capt Cooks but they were just as bad and the Tonga Toast wasn’t much better. Best meals were at Beaches and Cream and Homecoming....
Looking forward to Dec trip at GDT.

pools at both were mostly empty through the day.
We spent quite a bit of time at the Boulder Ridge Pool and yes, it wasn't crowded except for one evening but even then it was comfortable.
Ate a few times at Geyser Point no problem getting a table and they also had carry-out
We LOVE GP! Actually I think this is the first time we've stayed at WL and NOT eaten at GP since it opened but we did have drinks there one night with friends.
Best meals were at Beaches and Cream and Homecoming....
Looking forward to Dec trip at GDT.
We ate at Beaches & Cream in July and it was so good! We have GDT booked for February and are headed back to Disney for Thanksgiving. Glad you enjoyed your trip enough to be going back soon!

Happy Birthday to Steve! My birthday was the 24th, we were supposed to be there, but DH wasn't feeling masks in the Sept heat. lol We are trying again for Nov. Fingers crossed!

Loving the trip report, so far!
