Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend 2021 (April 15-18, 2021) - Now Virtual Only

It would have been nice if they had made it virtual BEFORE Southwest opened up their flight reservations for the weekend - which happened YESTERDAY. Ugh!

I haven't had to deal with a "transition to virtual" event before. Is the gift card for the difference between the in-person race and virtual or is it in addition? If I want the difference applied to my credit card, is that an option?

No you can not get the difference to your card. It’s gift card or full refund.

Ah well. I’ve said that the Rival Run theming really puts them in a tough spot as far as creativity goes, so maybe this means they’re going to go in a more general direction (i.e. just call it Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend) but we won’t know for awhile.

Anyway, easy decision on the medals for me, gonna pass on these.

More surprised they announced the transition today than the actual cancellation which was for the most part a given. Based on the verbiage, who knows what's in-store for this weekend come 2022. There could just be some rotating IP themed weekend given everything that's under the Disney umbrella now.

No you can not get the difference to your card. It’s gift card or full refund.

But I could - theoretically - request a full refund and the re-register for the virtual? I'm registered for the Kessel Run Challenge so it is a potential difference of $225. I'm not thrilled with the idea of a Disney gift card of that size when I have no firm plans to go to Disney any time in the near future. (Dopey 2022 is a possibility, but I'm not liking the "things are up in the air" vibe that I'm getting from this email).

Also, have the shirts been posted anywhere? I'm having a hard time with the price tag for a few race shirts, but for the right shirt, I might be tempted.

I'm assuming the shirts will be the logo that is listed under each event (minus the Ursula one). I do like that Challenge logo with the TIE Fighters and X-Wings.

I think the things are up in the air is the right way to go right now. There have been several races now they have opened registration for and then cancelled and you have to think on the backside they had put effort, money, planning into those races. You can only keep doing that so long because it costs them money for plannig for races they don't happen and the people signing up start to get upset.

Based on what we are hearing now I think W&D is a possibility but is far from a guarantee it can be held. Wait and see what happens with the vaccine a bit and then make a call is likely the right thing to do.

My bet is marathon weekend is next in-person race. They do offer W&D but make it virtual from the start. That is my guess.

Now I need to decide what to do with my trip plans. I'm going in a few weeks for what would have been marathon weekend. Not sure I want to turn around and go back in april given current state of WDW (and I doubt much is going to change between Jan and April). May be best to wait till fall and hopefully by then WDW may be "more normal"

Honestly, I'm kind of pleased about this. Given the situation, I wasn't planning on doing any in-person races next year, so this is a nice surprise.

Yeah I don't see them bailing on SW entirely, they just announced a boatload of content. I'm just baffled that they've kept the Rival Run theming this whole time, they were clearly running out of ideas to make it work.

As for my plans for April.... I dunno. I'm desperate for a vacation of some sort so depending on how things look I could head over anyway. It's either that or maybe do Marathon Weekend, when there's a possibility that at least one of the rides in development will be opened (thinking Tron specifically here).

I wonder what the Virtual Half Marathon Medal will be? I assume it will still be different than the Rival Run Half Medal despite them both being the same virtual race now. Just curious because I've been waiting to see what it will be. Last year's Chewie?

Weird that the medals are the exact same as last year.... I'll probably just get a refund, given that I did the race last year. If they had introduced something new I would definitely go for the virtual option. (EDIT: oops, it has been pointed out that we never actually received last year's medals... duh, I am confused and tired lol... still might choose the refund option this year.)

I am disappointed at yet another race cancellation, but I agree with their decision not to have an in-person race given that we don't know how much vaccination will happen by April.

As soon as it's my turn for a vaccine, I am READY (I'm high-risk, I live 1.5 hours from the Pfizer covid vaccine manufacturing plant, and 5min from a huge research hospital with lots of great big vaccine freezers, so... sign me up NOW please, lol!)

Hope everyone gets vaccinated asap so we can get back to runDisney again!!
