Agreed. Pain is pain. No they are not equipped to fix the tooth. Yes they are equipped to temporarily help you out and get you to a tolerable pain level.

The doctor called me back, but he wasn't much help. He told me as I was under the care of the dental office (even if nothing has happened yet,) he couldn't comment really except to tell me to go to the ER if the pain got intolerable. He advised a different hospital than the one I was going to go to if it got too bad, so I might do it.

Others have mentioned the possibility of infection and abscess, so I know you know. I hope you get a call to be seen, or if it gets worse, or you can’t tolerate the pain, please try to get seen at urgent care or some place like that.

There is no shame in going. This is nerve pain. Not ”just a tooth” etc. nerve pain is unbearable. Just go and get taken care of if you think you’re headed into another night of no sleep.

Vicks Vaporub. Follow the nerve pain/line on the outside of your mouth & it will probably help.

Well, I didn't stick it out the night. I went to the ER about 1 a.m. and just got home about a half-hour ago. The doctor who examined my mouth (no dentists on call) couldn't see any outward signs of infection, but told me to follow up with my dentist on the 19th.

They gave me a shot of morphine, and I had the first relief in what seems like forever. So, now I have a prescription for Tylenol 3 but I have to wait for my pharmacy to open at 9 to get it. Right now I feel groggy from the morphine but the pain is manageable. Hopefully now I can tough it out until my appointment.

They gave me a shot of morphine, and I had the first relief in what seems like forever. So, now I have a prescription for Tylenol 3 but I have to wait for my pharmacy to open at 9 to get it. Right now I feel groggy from the morphine but the pain is manageable. Hopefully now I can tough it out until my appointment.

I just can’t believe your dentist won’t see you. I would not be able to take the Tyl#3 as codeine makes me sick. Even if they do have a dentist on call, they mainly deal with emergencies in the middle of the night (fractured tooth, accidents, etc.). Do you have an Aspen Dental near you? Did you ask the receptionist at your dentist if the dentist is aware you are in this much pain? (Shoot, I’d stay late if necessary, as I do when my own patients need me.) Let them know the pain was so bad you had to go to the ER and got morphine. Ugh.

Still, though, I‘d think your dentist would want to see you, especially knowing that the ER people now know the story. (Presumably you told them who your regular dentist is.)

I do go for routine care like cleanings, yes. Bad teeth run in my family and except for one I still have all of my choppers and intend to keep it that way for as long as possible. I do have to say that the lady I've been speaking to has been very sympathetic. My regular dentist is booked through the end of the month with people needing help for pain and other problems. They've slotted me in on the 19th with a different dentist. I can't remember if I told them in the ER who my regular dentist is. They smacked me up with so much morphine I'm a bit fuzzy on what I said and did.

I know there are issues with overprescription of antibiotics but this seems like a situation where a $10 prescription of amoxicillin is in order.

I have had two teeth that needed root canals. In one case the dentist was able to see me that day, in the other it was late on a Friday.

The dentist sent a prescription to a nearby pharmacy and I was able to see her on Monday. That Friday night was the worst pain I have ever experienced. The only thing that helped was keeping cold water in my mouth. I ended up swallowing so much water I was nauseous. In the morning I got the prescription filled and by that night all the pain was gone.

Push for an antibiotic!

The nearest Aspen Dental is about a half-hour away. The closest major city is Philly, but I have to stay in NJ because of my insurance. I live in a very small town, but it seems like everyone who lives here needs to see the dentist right now. There is one other dentist in my area, but I've just left them because they are terrible, and I gave them a piece of my mind before leaving so I can't go back to them. I will call them if the pain goes above what it is now-manageable. Promise.

Push for an antibiotic!

I'm going to call the office right now and ask if I can get an antibiotic in the interim. It's a good idea. Perhaps I'm being too nice about it.

i am so sorry for your pain. just as an aside b/c i'm sure with mouth pain you are not much into eating right now-but try to make sure and eat some fruits, veg, maybe some oatmeal/cream of wheat to prevent constipation from the t-3's.
