Has anyone gotten any good airfare for March yet? We're trying to decide if we should fly and take the extra expense or if we really want to spend 40 hours in a car driving. (Round trip, 20 hrs each way WITH an almost 3 yr old!!!) I've only flown once before so I don't know if it's better to book early or wait it out and book later. Any pros out there have any advice?

Misty -

I never used to have very good luck flying anywhere out of Amarillo. Your best is probably to watch the Southwest website for a good internet special.

I used to get stuck on those Delta "puddle jumper" planes going up to Denver all of the time to make most of my connections. I HATE those things --- plus I have to warn you -- the seats are 2 single file rows with the aisle running down the middle -- except for the very last row which sits 3 across. If you don't get that back row it's very difficult to fly with a little kid. They are very noisy and bumpy.

I know what you mean!!!! The one and only time I flew, we flew United from North Dakota to Amarillo via Denver. The plane from ND to Denver was a 12 passanger I believe and the flight from Denver to Amarillo was the little tiny plane that you talked about. What a nightmare!!!! I'm hoping to get in on the $99 special on Southwest. It would still be $594 for the 3 of us but still better than driving I think.

The problem is that Southwest really doesn't have very much competition out of Amarillo -- so I think $89 to $99 one way is pretty good. Southwest will issue vouchers for a future trip if the rate drops, but I think they are only good for one year. Also - their internet site frequently offers double flight credit on frequent flyer miles.

There was a couple of times that we got really good rates out of Oklahoma City - so we drove there (about 4 1/2 hours) to fly.
