Canadian vs American Ketchup (yes, you read this correctly!)

-KETCHUP UPDATE-

We had the great fortune to vacation at Aulani in August and I took along a mid-sized squeeze bottle of Canadian Heinz which I told my dd to ration but it wasnt enough so I bought a small bottle of Hunts to try and boy was it vinegary! So Hunts is off the list as comparables-LOL!

Are you referring to m & m's as American smarties? In the States, smarties are what we know as rockets (hard sugar candy given out at Halloween).

No!! Smarties are Smarties are Smarties! Rowntree originally produced them now they are made by Nestlé's. They are round candy coated chocolate spheres kind of like M and M's but with more colours, red, yellow, brown, orange, mauve. The orange coated ones actually have an orange flavor. They can come in a square box like Ike candy or a circular container like a cardboard toilet holder. They are in many countries and I guess the old saying you are what you eat is apropos since cows produce the milk that makes the chocolate and depending on where you buy them they do taste different. I think UK Smarties taste the best but I'm sure there are lots of people who disagree with me.

Hello fellow canuck Dis'ers! My dd really dislikes American ketchup, she finds it way too tangy and not as sweet as our Canadian version. We traditionally use only Heinz and most of the time I just pack a mid size bottle for when we travel. I got to thinking that perhaps there is an American brand other than Heinz that might be closer to our Canadian version. For example, Compliments is pretty close. Can any of you offer any first hand experience with this? LOL, weird, I know but just trying to lighten my suitcase for our next trip! Thanks in advnace for any suggestions!
I have not read the entire thread...actually only the original post but I have to say, we love Canadian Heinz better than the US version! Every time my husband travels to canada, I have him stop at Walmart for a case or two. They really look at him funny at the border.

Anyway, I find The Simply Heinz or the organic pretty close to the Canadian made. Now I'll go back and read the thread!

Ps. I have even contacted Heinz and told them Canada's is better!

My husband just told me that the organic Heinz is made and packaged in Canada so I'm sure it's pretty close. I've yet to try it since we have a few bottles of Canadian left.

I didn't realize that Smarties were UK originals. And Wikipedia confirms:
Smarties are not distributed in the United States, except by specialist importers. This is because the American rights to the brand belong to the Smarties Candy Company, which manufactures its own hard tablet sweet under the registered trademark name Smarties. (In Canada, these are sold using the brand name Rockets.)
I also didn't know that there was a taste difference depending on the colour....orange is orange in UK? ROCKETS, on the other hand, are my favourite, and I eat them in ascending love of the flavours-so yellow and white are always last. :goodvibes

The reason that chocolate tastes different in different countries is because each country has it's own rules on the coco butter content. It's quite high in the UK which is why all their chocolate tastes so great. Here in Canada the content is low. There is also a lot of cheaply produced chocolate here that has a high wax content.

We find the Miracle Whip tastes different in the states. We like Canadian better and we like Canadian bread much better. Have been tempted to take some in my suitcase but don't think it would make the trip without being squashed. :)
