Discovery Cove Expansion Announced
New in 2002: Expanded Aviary and Laguna Grill
Discovery Cove, Orlandos exclusive tropical adventure park where guests can swim with dolphins, celebrated its success by announcing expansion in the coming year.
The park will expand its Aviary by doubling the size and number of winged inhabitants with a new small- and large-bird sanctuary, and the Laguna Grill outdoor seating area will be expanded to offer permanent weather protection for an additional 300 guests.
Our first year has proven to be a great success, and Discovery Cove has opened to incredible demand from guests all over the world, said Frank Murru, the parks general manager. While the dolphin-swim will always be the highlight of Discovery Cove, our new expansions will offer guests exhilarating encounters with even more amazing birds, and an additional protected seating area for guests dining at Laguna Grill.
Expansion of Discovery Coves interactive Aviary will double its current size and double the number of exotic birds, increasing the number of winged wonders to 300. The new additions will feature a separate small-bird sanctuary where guests can touch and hand-feed tiny, two-inch birds such as honeycreepers, finches and hummingbirds. Larger tropical birds up to 4 feet in height -- such as toucans, kookaburras and red-legged seriema -- also will be added in a new large-bird section of the Aviary.
Scheduled to be completed by March 2002, the expanded Aviary also will feature a flowing centerpiece fountain, hanging vines, trickling streams, naturalistic rockwork and lush tropical landscaping. In addition, a new 21-foot-long rocky beach cave will create a striking entrance to the Aviary from Discovery Coves Tropical River.
So there you have it. DC still investing in fresh ideas - even if this expansion work might have a slight negative impact on guests who visit between now and then.
