Hi Sarah, am I too late to vote? It sounds like you'll end up doing the Rangerstown race, which sounds fun! I wanted to also put in a plug for the Poland Springs run. I live in NYC and have done that one before, and it's fun. Even though I run in Central Park all the time, there was a different feeling that day for that race. For someone like me who has never done (and never will do!) the NYC marathon, it's pretty exciting to run in Central Park and cross the same finish line where the marathon will take place. There's a really exciting vibe. I know you are planning to do the NYC marathon in the future, so it may not be the same, but for me it was pretty cool. Either way, you have three great options! (And on a separate note, I admire how you plan and do a great job of sticking to your training!)
It's not too late until the race sells out
Thanks for the input! I've done a bunch of Central Park races this year, and I was kinda thinking that the Poland Springs run would basically just be a repeat of all of those. But one of the reasons why I did want to consider it is that I thought that with it being so close to the marathon it would be a totally different feeling ... so it's definitely good to hear that the race has such an exciting vibe. I'm definitely not writing it off, because I think it could be a really great experience, but I think I'm going to see if I can hold off on the decision for a bit and see how I feel after my next race (which is in two weeks, not in Central Park for once ).
Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words and helpful input!
Whlle not a millennial, I also sometimes think "I really wish I had taken that particular photo with a race medal." I enjoy seeing the different fun medal photo ideas runners come up with. I saw somebody do one of those distance jersey photos where the guy was standing far enough behind his Giant Race photo so that it looked like he was wearing his medal as a jersey.
I once created a website where you can log in with your Strava account and it would show you pictures taken near the end of your last activity (the implication being that you would log in right after your race and it would pull the race data from your Strava account) to serve as inspiration for your medal pictures. Despite having created that ... I'm still terrible at race medal pictures. The best one I ever came up with was actually an idea I stole from someone else who had done something similar at DL after the Dumbo Double Dare challenge (I want to say it was @Ariel484, but I might be wrong), which was for the WDW 10K, when my costume was dumbo-inspired, I took this a few days later:
I think this a very healthy attitude to have. You need to enjoy running on your terms and for your reasons. That also means enjoying it at the distances and time duration that you want to. Like you said, you can always train for a longer distance if you find a race that you want to run. And there may be plenty of shorter races that fit your needs.
I think we're happier as runners when we run on our own terms and for our own reasons.
This is very true.
Also very hard around the DIS with all the enablers who try to #peerpressure you into running all the races. Oh DIS people...
But yeah, I think I'll definitely be able to find shorter races that I enjoy, and if I occasionally want to do something a little longer, I can do that too. It's all about finding what works for me ... the only way to survive running is to run the way that you want to run.
