Running for my Disney - Now a PTR!

Thanks Bec and Zanzibar :thumbsup2

I bit the bullet today and just booked my photopass plus. I think I was sick of thinking about it.
I figured that it's not a huge amount of money and I will at least get SOME value out of it. I don't mind a short wait for a photo, but definitely not one more than 10 minutes.

Congrats!

Well, the travel account balance has had a couple of weeks to build up again now. What better way to celebrate than to spend it all, right? :rotfl:

I went ahead and booked our San Andreas Fault cycling tour in Palm Springs. We are shouting both my parents for their birthdays, so it wasn't a cheap exercise, but I had a 10% discount code with Viator, which eased the pain a little :thumbsup2 I was disappointed though, that they now only offer AA points if you spend over $500 in one go :scared1: Last time I used them it kicked in at $200!

Next I did our ESTAs. I'm pleased to say that we have been pre-approved for travel :cool2:

Finally, I thought I'd have another go at Priceline to try and upgrade on my accommodation for those pesky first 2 nights. Still no luck! Actually, I could have got what I suspect was the Marriott Suites for a pretty good price, but I really want to be a short walk from the parks for this time.

You may remember that I had to change my horse riding plans in Phoenix, which meant that the hotel I orginally booked on Priceline was a long way away from my main activity. I didn't mind the idea of driving out there, it was the thought of a long drive back in the dark on my own that wasn't so nice.

So while I was on Priceline I thought I'd just see if there was anything good in the area. There was a mystery hotel deal on what I figured out would be the Carefree Resort & Conference Center, which was about half the price I could get it for anywhere else, but still a little more than I was happy spending (nearly $100 once taxes, conversion fees etc taken into account). So I thought I'd be cheeky and try to bid for a better discount! I was aiming for about $10 less than the price of the mystery deal, and was successful :thumbsup2 Of course, it was only after I'd done it that I realised I could have played the system a bit more to see if I could get even more of a discount... But I'm happy enough with that. My drive home will now be less than 20 minutes as opposed to more than an hour :thumbsup2

Of course, Priceline deals being non-refundable, I've had to just wear the cost of my original booking. But the good news is, the cost of that and the new booking put together is still about the same as what the new hotel would have cost me anywhere else.

On a side note, I actually did see the Carefree Resort for a similar price on a website called getaroom.com. I'd never heard of that website before, so I did some googling and found a real mixed bag of positive and negative reviews, but no current ones. I ended up not feeling comfortable enough with it to go ahead with the booking. Just wondering if anyone else has heard of it/used it?

Nice looking resort!

I haven't heard of getaroom before. Perhaps someone else might have used them.
Good for you booking that cycling tour along the San Andreas. Bet your parents will be happy for the treat!

Yeah it's a lot fancier than I need, but that seems to be more of a 'resort' type area and I couldn't really find any basic motels. But since I got it for the price of a basic motel anyway, I'm happy with that :thumbsup2

My parents are both quite heavily into cycling, so I think they'll really enjoy the bike tour. DH has had a bit of time 'in the saddle' too. I'm not so sure how I'll go with it, especially since I will be expecting it to get to around 40 degrees while we're there. But it's mostly downhill (they drive us to the top of the hill in the minibus, then we just ride down), so it shouldn't be too bad.

Next booking... Palm Desert, for our bike tour. Now, I looked long and hard at VRBO rentals out in the desert for this one, in areas like Joshua Tree and 29 Palms, since the scenery is what we're going for. However, having to meet for the bike tour at 7am, we didn't want to have an hour's drive to get there :crazy2:

There are so many hotels to choose from in the Palm Springs area, and they all kind of look the same. As long as it gets good reviews on TripAdvisor, I'm not really fussed where we stay.

I got a promo offer from a website called Rocketmiles, which is a hotel booking site which focuses specifically on hotels that come with lots of airline miles (only for US airlines though). The offer was 5000 bonus points on your first booking. There are no fabulous deals there or anything, it's all about the points, so I ended up spending a little more than I probably had to. However, it costs $145 USD to buy 5000 AA points, so I thought it was worth spending an extra $50 over 2 nights. I got 7000 miles all up with the bonus. I ended up booking Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, which is actually in Indio, but close enough. I gave up on the suite idea, and will just get my parents to book their own room.

This afternoon I plan to call the hotels I need to cancel. It may be too late over there with the time difference, but I figure they're hotels and should be available until pretty late at night anyway.

Slowly getting through the list!

With just over 4 weeks to go, I thought it was time I did a running update.

My body has decided that now is a great time to get sick with a yucky yucky head cold  At least I've got another 4 weeks to get over it!

My long run intervals have gotten up to 7 minutes now, aiming for 10 this week, assuming I'm well enough.

My last distance run was 8km, and I did it in less than 70 minutes, which is well under pace :thumbsup2 Only two more distance runs to go! For those who are interested, the minimum pace set by RunDisney is 10 minutes per km. I am currently averaging about 8.5 minutes per km.

I have ordered all our personalised running gear. The skirts for Mum and I arrived today. I also bought some craft stuff for making our accessories and will start on those this week.

The park hours/entertainment schedule has been released for that week now. The fireworks are on nightly, but F! is only on the weekend. Unfortunately WOC is on too late for DH and I to watch it together (starts at 9:45pm, not much good with a 3:30am start!).

I dropped off my Dapper Day dress to be altered yesterday. The alterations lady loved it and wanted to know all about where I got it from etc. I also got my shapewear and a little headband fascinator to go with it.

Hanging out now for the hours/schedule to be released for the beginning of September so I can lock in our dining options for those days.

Finally got my accommodation for the first two nights locked in!

For about the same price as the Motel 6, I have ended up with the Red Lion. Bidded for a 3 star, but Red Lion is 3 1/2 so I got upgraded. There's still no free breakfast, but each room does have a fridge (unlike the Motel 6 where I would have had to pay extra), so I can buy my own yoghurt/juice/milk etc. There is free wifi at this one though, so bonus!

I'd never considered staying at the Red Lion, so it will be interesting to see what it's like.

Looks like its all coming together. Don't overdo training while you are sick! Get well soon. Sounds like you're all set for the marathon!

Nearly all set! Just need to make the accessories now. That will include Piglet, Tigger, Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit ears, bow and apron for Alice, Mad Hatter hat, bowties for White Rabbit and Mad Hatter, and streamer overskirt for Cheshire Cat. I still need to get the material for the apron and overskirt, but I'll get started on the rest soon!

I also need to make up a black and orange stripedy cover for Mum's visor to go with her Tigger outfit. She doesn't have a skirt to match this one, but she'll probably just wear a pair of black leggings and we might try to find some orange KT tape to add some stripes :thumbsup2

I am so impressed with your energy for making all this! Looking forward to pics of EVERYONE wearing their outfits!

I'll be interested to see what you think as well.

Hope you feel better soon!!!
