scooter rental

Hi all,

We have a friend joining us in October who may rent a scooter for the fist time. Although she is able to walk, she has a bad ankle which really limits the amount of walking and the speed of walking. In any case, I did a search and read about companies that rent. I think she was just planning on renting at the park each day - is this a bad idea? Does anyone know what how costs would compare?

Finally,- does anyone know if there are weight limits?

Any info on this topic would be most helpful!

Thanks!

I have used Walker a few times. They will ask for a credit card and charge it the day before arrival. They will deliver the ECV to your hotel bell services before your arrival and pick it up there after your departure. Their rates, especially for longer than a week, are much better than Disney's. Also, their scooters are much better.

You don't say if you are renting a car or what. If you are using a car for getting around, the ECVs break down into five pieces, the heaviest about 39 pounds. They take about a minute or so to take apart and about two minutes (once you are used to it) to put it together.

Another suggestion is find out your state's requirements for a temporary disabled hang tag and get the paper work and have your doctor sign off on it. The tag will allow you to use any of the handicap parking areas (which will be a necessity). Also, with the policy of charging for valet parking, with a handicap hang tag the fees will be waived. Also the valets will usually volunteer to assist in loading/unloading an ECV. In Virginia I printed the required form from the DMV website. When I took the completed form to the DMV Office it took less than 15 minutes from the time I walked in until I had my tag.

I know that at Walker the standard ECV can carry up to 300 pounds, and they have larger ones (at a slightly higher price) that wuill handle up to 450 pounds.

The most important reasons for renting offsite (in addition to price and maneuverability) are that you always have the ECV (such as for Downtown Disney or the minor parks) and sometimes, if you arrive at a park after opening (such as switching parks on the same day) an ECV might not be available for park rental. (Although the batteries are generally good for about 20-25 miles at maximum weight, Disney will not rent out a returned ECV unless the battery is at full charge.)

I'm sure you'll get some helpful information from DIS posters who have rented ecvs, but I'll start you out.
If she's only going to the parks for a few days and is OK with getting a wheelchair if there are no ecvs left when she gets there, then renting at the parks is OK. They can't be reserved ahead of time and if you park hop, it's possible that there may not be an ecv at the next park. Here's a link to the official Disney website info about touring with a disability.
The per day cost is less if you use one of the off-site rental places than if you rent per day from the parks. Renting from off-site also means you don't have to worry about availability and it can be used where ever she goes.
Here's a list of places DIS posters have rented from (in case they were not all on your list):

When you rent, they will ask the size of the person. They do have heavy duty ecvs for people who are "Pooh sized".
