The artwork on this map sure seems more groovy 70's than it does hip 80's.

Poor Mrs. TCD did not get a live performance of Starbooty, but she did get to shake her booty to the Pointer Sisters and 867-5309. Who can forget that song, Jenny, Jenny! Can you imagine how much fun that must have been? Classic!

Here are scans of the front and back of the scrapbook page where Mrs. TCD kept the map:

Whew!

I told you I had a lot of comments. But, I think that is enough for now.

So, thanks, and keep that scanner and midnight oil burning!

Please please please get Mrs. TCD to remove these precious artifacts from those sticky albums ASAP. Those pages have ACID and lots of it. There will be nothing left for your great-grandchildren to see. Please place these rare and beautiful items into and ACID-FREE album.

I know that I have already posted a couple of pics from the shores of D.I. in front of the shipwreck, but I noticed something I didn't remember on this one from 1975. I didn't remember the torches on the beach! Mom clearly remembered, of course. :goodvibes

KSCN0012-1.jpg

The straight bow was still there in '75. I almost forgot about posting this one! Maybe it will help solve the mystery! The promo pic w/the contemporary is a bit baffling to me too. Could the CR have been added to the background w/special effects just for the brochure? I don't see any other way the CR could be visible from the shipwreck, if indeed it is the same one as in my pics and brochure maps. As I recall while on the boat to MK, the wreck definitely faces the fort/RC area.

Edit/add: After a closer look, this one does not have the curvy carved bow as in the promo pic. There are brackets for the straight thing, but I don't see a curvy carved bow. Doesn't look the same as the promo to me. JMO Also just noticed that the ship in the 1983 pic has a boom on the mast. The 1975 ship pics do not have a boom. I saw the promo pic on a brochure in KFM's stash, I'll pull it back out for a closer look.

OK, I'm sorry. But, that Farrah poster left quite an impression on my adolescent male mind.

TCD

:lmao: I posted a shaking my head at you smiley, but I was really laughing in person! I'm sure that pic of Farrah affected many adolescent boys. Probably still does! :rotfl:

I'm afraid it's too late for that. The reason I scanned the pages with everything in place is that those photos are pretty much fused onto the pages. The brochure was damaged when I peeled it off the "magnetic" (I think that's what they called these things) page.

Some of the innoventions of the 70's ended up being bad ideas, didn't they?

I was going to say ask Mr. KFK how he likes the lady in the red bathing suit.

But, on second thought, I don't want to get him a whoopin' upside the head, so don't.

This boat conspiracy is getting out of hand. :thumbsup2 The shipwreck hasn't changed other than pieces falling off or being removed (exception being the boom on the mast). The pic with the CR in the background looks odd because of the perspective. You could take the same shot today, assuming all of the over growth was cleared away. One has to realize that in these pics that the ship is leaning, and that can play some serious tricks on the eye when viewed in 2 dimensions. For example, if you take the bracket on the bow, which is curved in 1 dimension, and rotate it toward being 90 deg to the focal plane of the cam. It will progressively look less curved until at the 90 deg point it will appear straight as an arrow.

I agree... the promo shot was taken from the water (from the other side of the boat than KFK's photos), at an angle getting the contemporary in the photo.

The lady in the red swimsuit's got nuttin' on KFK. No need to look beyond his own front door! :rotfl2: (and yep, one look that lingers a little too long just might get him a whoopin' up side the head.) :lmao: Kidding! I'm not the jealous kind. ;)

OK! I concede! I didn't consider the overgrowth and I see your point. However, the boom in the 1983 pic that wasn't there in 1975 is still mysterious to me.

Now, get your coffee and readin' spectacles......This is the first FW Gazette that we have in our stash 1989.

Since I was covering 1989, these pics needed to be shared. What are the 80's without HAIR!

Aaahhhh! christmas at Disney! Loved it. KFK's on and only Disney Christmas visit.

KSCN0020-3.jpg

Can't remember the name of the attraction at then, MGM Studios. You were selected out of a crowd, taken into a room, put into a costume and told to act out certain things which was shown on a screen as if you were on a TV show. When the curtain rose, you were standing on stage in front of a max capacity crowd in a theatre.:scared1: KFK and KFM were 2 out of 3 in a girls singing group. Da do ron ron was our song. :lmao: Looks more like Hairspray the Musical! :rotfl:

I did that show I was the Skipper and my cousin was Gilligan.

I agree with both of you. And also that this has been discussed enough.

On the remote chance that someone is still interested, I wanted to point out again that the Discovery Island boat, whether it is the Walrus or Hispaniola, is prominently featured in this video:

1978 Video of Pablo Cruise on Discovery Island

Here is a screen cap from the video:

Clearly, the pole that is missing in the 1983 photo was there, and so was the boom on the mast. So my working hypothesis now is that those dirty hippies from Pablo Cruise broke the pole off of the bow.

One last time- if you haven't watched that video, you really need to. It is very unintentionally hilarious!

OMG, that hair!

Fabulous!

And, I would be remiss if I failed to note the emerging mullet on KFK's bro.

Nice . . .

But I can't decide if he reminds me of a young Billy Ray Cyrus:

or Joe Dirt:

And, I mean no offense by those comments. I appreciated a nice mullet back in the day.

Now, for my comments about the Ft. Wilderness Gazette.

Wow! There is so much to note:

-There are several references to the "Fort Wilderness Lodge." Since there are no references to the Reception Outpost, I assume that is what is being called the Fort Wilderness Lodge. Obviously that nomenclature had to go when the Wilderness Lodge was constructed just a few years down the road.

-The Gazette refers to a food service location called the "Beach Shack." This is news to me. I have never heard of it before. I wonder if this was in the building where the boat rentals are currently handled. There is a side porch with tables there, and it appears that part of the building is not currently being used. I never knew there was a food service location on the beach. Does anyone remember anything about this?

-The Gazette lists the closing time for both pools at 10 pm. In recent times, both pools have been open 24 hours a day. The current Gazette does list a midnight closing time, but apparently it is not enforced.

-Both the Gazette and the DI brochure refer to Discovery Island as being presented by Gaines Food, Inc. I never heard of this before. Was this Gaines burgers? When did Friskies become the sponsor?

-The map in the Gazette shows the Trail Blaze Corral as basically abutting the 1700 loop. This has been mentioned previously on this thread and elsewhere. At one time, I thought the map was wrong, but now I think the corral really was located there.

-The Flag transportation system sure seems complicated. I much prefer the way things are today. And, that is not something I say very often.

-The Discovery Island brochure describes Discovery Island as a zoological park where the animals roam free. I hadn't heard that description before, but it is consistent with the TCD gang's encounter with a Capybara on the island back in the day (remind me to tell that story some time)

-Last but not least, the Gazette describes Trails End Buffeteria as a separate restaurant from Crockett's Tavern. I have heard of this before, but I have never understood how things were laid out there. Can anyone tell me how this worked in practice? Ever since I remember, the dining area has been Trails End, and just the small bar area was the Tavern. Back in the day, were these areas separated by a wall? What was Trails End and what was Crocketts?

Thanks for more great stuff, KFK!

What a thing this little thread has become!!!

TCD

I noticed the "beach shack" reference too, and thought it made a lot of sense. That boat rental building has always looked like it housed a food service operation at once time.

The one reference I keep expecting to find and haven't seen yet is one giving a clue to what the window on the lakeside of the Settlement Trading Post building was used for. We've seen references on the boards in the past about a ticket window operating there, like what the concierge windows in Pioneer Hall do, or even a window to sell ice cream. Does anyone know...or better yet, does anyone have pictures?

I vaguely remember the beach shack. We used to swim at the beach a lot, and I know that we had snacks and drinks there too. I was just a kid then, but I remember my parents buying food in the area.

I definitely remember eating at Crockett's and Trail's End when they were separate restaurants. Crockett's was just those tables on the lower level. The small "hip" wall was all that separated them. I used to tear the small arcade up and ride my skateboard outside while my parents waited for a table. I remember one time my mom tricked me into eating some cactus pulp that was in a salad she ordered. That was the nastiest taste ever to me then.

The bus flag system was horrible. Back then it seemed that you had to go to the TTC to go anywhere. I remember waiting and trying to spot the tiny stripes on the flags as the buses approached.

I also remember the old location of the corral. You could see it on the way into the Fort.

What a thing this little thread has become!!!

TCD

This little thread has indeed become a big thread!

We all agree the DI shipwreck discussion should just go down with the ship!

By all means, whoever has not seen the Pablo Cruise video, please do so now! You will either seriously love it or you will roll with laughter. I'm not judging you either way...just sayin' ...

Yes, the KFK hair was livin' large in the 80's! :lmao: I am proud to report that KFBro's hair never turned into a full blown mullet. That's about as far as it went.

Gaine's was def the makers of Gaine's burgers. Not sure why this is significant, but there you go. Not sure when Friskies took over the sponsorship.

I do remember animals roaming free at DI, but I also have pics of animals in cages. DH and I were there on our honeymoon in 95, but sadly did not take any pics at all and my memory is fuzzy on that trip.

I don't even know what the Trail Blaze Corral is. How did i miss that?

I do remember Crockett's Tavern being a make your own burger bar, sort of like the Electric Umbrella, only the burgers were far better. Cousin Julie and I ate there in the 80's. As I remember, the layout was the same as now, but I won't swear to it.

I didn't remember the name of the snack bar at the marina, but yes, there was indeed one there. I remember it well. Seems like they also used to provide towels for the lake swimmers.

Yes, the pools used to close at 10 PM.

Agreed...the bus flag system looks pretty rough.

The bus flag system was horrible. Back then it seemed that you had to go to the TTC to go anywhere. I remember waiting and trying to spot the tiny stripes on the flags as the buses approached.

I also remember the old location of the corral. You could see it on the way into the Fort.

There was a span of time where everything was filtered through the TTC, which was a complete and utter disaster! I don't think it lasted a terribly long time. Not good...not good at all. :sad2:

"Business in the front, party in the back."

Yikes! KFK is staying away from THAT party! :scared1:

I forgot one comment about the Gazette.

For some reason, this guy:

untitled.jpg

Reminds me of Bruce Jenner.

I don't think you can see it in this photo:

bruce_jenner_now_wi_full-711437.jpg

But, I'm telling you, shave off the facial hair, and that is Bruce Jenner.

Weird.

Who is that guy supposed to be anyway?

What does he have to do with the Hoop Dee Doo?

TCD

BTW- Just so no one worries, I will be away from the Disboards for the next few days, but I'll be back. . .

Please feel free to carry on without me.
