I just got a pin code in the mail. It's for travel through August though so I can't use it (going in October). It wasn't an outstanding deal anyway, 30% off and free park hopper on a magic your way 5-day ticket.
I don't think anything Disney does marketing-wise is purely random, but I don't know how I got the pin and I think I've received them before and either didn't know what they were or knew I wasn't going that particular year and just tossed them.
I did sign up for the DVD. I did update my info for My Disney Experience and put in dates and hotel preference for a trip, but didn't book. I actually did this on two or three different days, but never booked...not to get a pin, just to compare rates and specials.
In the past we've stayed on site, but I can only think of one other time about 12 years ago that I stayed during the time this recent pin code was offered even though it says something about how we've been there during this time of year or something.
I also have a Disney Movie Rewards membership and a Disney Visa Card.
Also, I generally get lots of offers for casinos, time shares, etc. by mail (and credit card offers), so I guess I have decent credit and I'm probably on some list somewhere that says I tend to spend money on vacations that provide entertainment/gaming, so that might have something to do with it.
And two years ago, we stayed off site, but used previously purchased Disney tickets, so it's possible something shows up on Disney's marketing list that says we went to Disney, but didn't stay on site after doing so three times in a row. We also don't go every year.
But, who really knows?
