The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I got tickets for Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time for Hannukah (which I loved) and tickets to Fun Home for Christmas! Benefits of celebrating both holidays...:) I am really looking forward to Fun Home!

Saw Spring Awakening tonight. Still just as fantastic as it was in October. My best friend loved it. The only complaint I had about tonights performance was that Austin (Melchior) was BARELY audible a lot of the time. I'm going to venture to guess that this grueling holiday schedule is the reason and he's just a bit fatigued.

It was great to see the show completely sold-out tonight! I wish them all the best for the next few weeks as their run comes to a close. I hope EVERYONE at SA is extremely proud of the work they've done.

Regarding BroadwayCon - I had thought about it, and looking at some of the panels, some sound really interesting (like producing a Cast Recording) - but at the end of the day I'd really mostly be interested in the marketplace and signings and they haven't announced any names that I'd be willing to spend that kind of money for. :-/
If word-of-mouth is really strong, maybe I'll go next year if it happens again.

I saw The King and I for the 3rd time this past saturday - show is still amazing and Hoon Lee as the King is really fantastic. Ken is still my favorite though, Hoon is #2 and Jose would have to be #3.

Next week is my second visit to Spring Awakening - I loved it so much that I'm taking my best friend for her Christmas gift.

Is anyone giving or received any theatre-related gifts this year? Share!

I am taking my daughter's two best friends to weekends in New York as their Christmas gifts. I'm taking them separately, so friend number one is going in May, and we are seeing Tuck Everlasting and the girls are seeing Hamilton while a friend and I go to Waitress. We are all also seeing the Fiddler revival. I'm taking friend number two in September, and we are also seeing Hamilton (the girls are obsessed, which I think is just great!) and School of Rock. My gift is I get to watch these girls faces when the see the shows!

I received tickets to Shuffle Along ( I can't wait!) and I'm taking my best friend to Spring Awakening (so that means I get to go again!).

I also received the complete Robert Lepage/Met Opera Ring Cycle on Blu-Ray and I'm getting new head shots!

Oh! Shuffle Along! What a GREAT gift!

We have both those vocal/piano books. My daughter played/sang "Falling Slowly" at the school talent show this year.
My daughter does have the piano book for Once (not Next to Normal) and she plays Falling Slowly all the time. Her face when she took the Books out of the box was priceless. Then she says, now I can read the words so they can tear my heart out, all the time :-)

I've added Noises Off to my trip next week (so now I will be seeing King Charles III, The Color Purple, and Noises Off). It will be one of the final previews. I'm pretty pleased about it. :)

I saw Allegiance yesterday. It was very okay. I loved Lea Salonga and Telly Leung, but the score was so boring and repetitive and the show took a grand total of zero risks. I did enjoy it though! And I was with my aunt, who was very very moved.

Saw Fiddler on the Roof this weekend.

There were things I really, really, REALLY liked and things that were... eh.

First off, I just want to say that there's some incredible talent in this production. Everyone was phenomenal in their roles-- loved Kantor (Motel), Burnstein (Tevye), Hecht (Goldie), and all of Tevye's daughters. Second, the choreography in this show is genuinely some of the best dancing I've seen from all of the shows I've ever seen on Broadway. I hope it gets the Tony for best choreography this year.

However... there were some weird direction things going on in this production. Without spoiling too much, Tevye's character becomes sort of a "character-within-a-character". I can't explain it, but if you see it, you'll understand what I mean. I feel like it adds an unnecessary "layer" to Tevye's character that certainly has good intentions, but it got lost with a lot of the audience members around me. Also, the fiddler was on a harness and he... flew???? from the bottom stage right up to the top of stage left???? And it was really weird. Sher is known for "out-of-the-box" direction (see also this revival of The King and I), and I'm all for new interpretations of shows. Sadly, it just didn't feel like certain things were executed well. It felt like Fiddler was trying to replicate what came natural to the Spring Awakening revival just for the sake of having new things.

In any case, the show was good fun, especially if you loved the movie/past Broadway productions. It was my first time seeing Fiddler live and I really enjoyed it for what it was, weird direction choices aside.

I'm seeing it in 2 weeks, looking forward to it, weird direction and all

Interesting review! I like an honest assessment!
There are two shows that I never need to see again - "Fiddler" and "Annie"! lol There is truth to "too much of a good thing"!

Bette Midler is going to star in Hello Dolly! This will be a show worth seeing!!
Not until 2017, I read. But still, it should be worth the wait. It's been TOO long since her last show, Rochelle, Rochelle. ;)

Wow! Now THAT I would love to see. I missed seeing her live every time she had a concert here. :( (I did see a taped performance of her Vegas act, I think. I think Hello Dolly would be a delight to see her in.

Please list when you know the Hello Dolly tickets go on sale, especially as it goes into previews. :hyper:

On Broadway.com they say exactly the same thing.
