Do you opt out of the body scanner?

My favorite part of that article was that the American public has a God given right to protection.....Well, flying isn't a God given right. If you don't like the security measures, don't fly. But please, don't tell us that you 'have' to fly, but you refuse to go through any of the screening machines and you don't want to be patted down. I really don't think that going through these machines is going to turn us, or our offspring, into raging mutants! It's just not a concern for me!

We're probably turning ourselves into mutants more by having cell phones in our hands at all times!

In all honesty, the amount of radiation you're exposed to in a body scanner is less than the amount of radiation you're exposed to while in the air.

I flew at 15 weeks pregnant and my doctor said it was fine to go through the scanner. My son is now almost 10 months old and he wasn't born with 2 heads or 4 hands or anything.

I don't opt out, doesn't bother me one way or another. I'm pretty sure I don't have a thing that they haven't seen and if I do, it's time they see it. I've also been patted down and some of them pretty thorough before they had scanners and I'd much rather be scanned then have things twisted that really weren't meant to be twisted (other than in a mamogram machine).

I love the backscatter machines! I have a metal rod in my leg and going to the airport used to mean a very thorough pat down every time because I set off the metal detector no matter what. The scanning machines mean I can just go through like everyone else and not get "handled" like I'm on a second date every date. Much faster! Now if they bought me dinner before the frisking, I might reconsider.

I have seen some people opt out, but most of the time for medical reasons. a friend who was pregnant just after they started using them would opt out each time because her doctor wasn't sure they were safe and she was traveling alot for work in her early pregnancy. Her doctor even said that 90% sure it would be safe but since they were so knew she may want to just get the pat down if she was more comfortable with that.

My mom gets the pat down too. I think its cause she uses a wheel chair alot of times in the airport. I'm not sure why that matters as she could stand and walk in the scanner. maybe if your in a wheel chair they just assume you can't?

You can find a variety of sources with scientists and engineers, doctors pointing out the harmful affects of millimeter wave technology machines. If you trust them, go ahead and go through them. I seriously don't have a problem with anyone who uses them. Just please don't say the science is settled on these. They are too new to know whether or not they are harmful. Everything that is now found to cause cancer was at one point deemed harmless by scientists and doctors.

Article Summary
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) claims their “advanced imaging technology” devices are just as safe as traditional metal detectors. Research shows this isn’t the case and that thedoses of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the TSA’s millimeter wave technology machines can cause cancer.

  • Millimeter wave technology is used in the treatment of skin cancer (due to its known skin-heating properties), which means it undeniably has an effect on human cells.

  • Like all other forms of radiation, millimeter waves don’t differentiate between healthy cells and malignant cells. In the case of concentrated radiation blasts from millimeter wave body scanners, it means every cell on the surface of your body is targeted.

  • A World Health Organization (WHO) report revealed that millimeter waves not only heat the skin but also damage eyesight and cause cancer − particularly skin cancer.

  • By choosing a manual pat-down, air travelers can minimize their radiation exposure and thus minimize the risk of developing cancer.

Quite honestly, studies are useless because if I wanted to I could find a study that argued water isn't wet and the sky isn't blue. Data can be spun however is needed to fit an agenda. And EVERYONE has an agenda

I agree and I like to live on the edge. Heck, I've been known to stand right in front of the microwave when heating up my TV dinner.

I absolutely agree. I think a person needs to read everything they can to educate themselves and then determine their comfort level for themselves.

As long as you are not jumping inside the microwave I think you are okay.

To answer the original question - DH opts out. Why, I really don't know. It doesn't take more than a minute or two for the pat-down. I figure I do things that don't make sense to him but cause no real harm, this is just his thing.

LOL... if I went through one of these things on a daily basis it may be worthy of research.
But only when I get the random buzzer? Which in all our flights this year was once, not enough to even be a blip to be concerned about

Apparently your "variety" of sources does not include any reputable ones. But you have me giggling hysterically This is beyond funny. If you had ANY idea of the differences in the two things this "summary" is trying to compare you would understand why.

Just because it's on the internet does NOT make it fact.

Folks, just trust me the technology used to treat cancer and the technology used by the TSA are not even comparable.

I think research into "how to avoid being gullible" might be a better option IMHO LOL!
LOL!

Wait, you won't go though the TSA scanner but you use a microwave????

Here's some articles from equally unreliable sources to keep you up tonight

I guess you don't have anything to worry about then, do you?

Just wondering how many people on this board opt out of the body scanner...

Every time. I've NEVER been through one.

I'm a trusted traveler now, so I generally get pre-checked, but before that, I'd always opt-out and do the pat-down. I get to the airport with plenty of time and the scanners add zero security, so I make the DHS folks work for their paycheck... ;)
