movies--are they that big a deal?

The FB book for my cruise has a couple of threads talking about what movies will be playing. Is it weird that for a short cruise, I have no intention of spending 2 hours in a theatre? If I want to see a movie I can go while I'm home--even if Im cheap I can go on a Tuesday for $5.
Now for a longer cruise, one with a sea day, maybe that would be a good idea. Or if it rains on CC day and drives us back on the ship. Or if we had kids with us. But we are spending our Nassau day onboard and have spa day passes and a mixology class scheduled. Time is so precious on short cruises I don't get the time spent watching a movie. Am I missing something?

Different people have different priorities. I'm like you. I rarely make it to a movie on any of my cruises, even the 7 night ones. But some people really enjoy going to see the movies on board. And I can understand the draw if you have a family of 4 or 5 and can see the new Star Wars or Pixar release without spending extra.

It's not weird at all.

Nope. You aren't missing something. You have pointed out exactly when it makes sense for you and when it doesn't. The reason you see a couple of threads about what movies will be playing is because some people look forward to seeing a new movie when they are on a cruise.

Well as an expate it's awesome seeing a movie not dubbed and we rarely go to the movies.. I seem to see most of my movies either on Netflix or on a plane.. I am actually looking foward to seeing a movie or two with my kids on the 4 night.. but most likely the late showings depending on weather.

Same as above, depends on your preferences. I can take or leave movies, but my husband loves movies. He is so excited that he will get to see Infinity War, Incredibles 2 AND Solo next week! With 3 kids, jobs, sports, etc, we don't make it to the movies often. The kids are pumped to see Incredibles 2 and taking our family of 5 to the movies at home is an expensive outing, so we feel like we are getting a deal with our "free" (ahem, "included") movies a part of our cruise fare!

On the other hand, our family doesn't go to the shows. Although I am going to force everyone to go see Beauty and the Beast with me:)

You might find that a nice, cool, dark, theater with a movie is a great way to relax and slow down while racing around between activities on the ship. We even watched some old Disney movies in our room as well, but it is true that we were on the ship for 7 days, not three. We intentionally left a movie that had come to theaters the week before we sailed so we could watch it together on the ship. It was fun. Plus we were travelling with my sister's family and my mother, so it meant that all of the cousins could see it together with their grandmother. She appreciated that a lot.

Over 140 nights in 19 cruises on DCL. Have made it to a movie that wasn't that nights main stage entertainment about 4 times - and twice was after 10pm and I slept through most of it. One time we were at Castaway Cay and the weather was simply awful (but they had to dock so they could collect the big bucks from the people that rented cabanas :smooth: ) we didn't get off of the ship and we did watch a movie. Have stood on the top deck or pool deck and watched 15 minutes of a movie up there from time to time.

For the main stage movies I have seen from Marvel: one of the Iron Man movies, and both Guardians of the Galaxy movies and Ant Man. Also have seen many Disney / Pixar movies there as well. But I have passed on seeking Dr. Strange, Spiderman, Lincoln and a whole lot more, because there are other things for me to do and I can always rent a movie back at home!

But the choice is up to you. Remember, the hardest part about a DCL cruise (after getting past the sticker shock) is deciding what NOT to do!

Agreed. On a short cruise, IN OUR CASE, it's a very bad investment of our time. (Please take note that I'm talking specifically about Movies in a movie theater, which I have, a 5 minutes walk from my office and can easily go to on discounted tuesday so it's nothing special for us.)

Let's say I booked at 700$/pp for a 3 nights cruise and we boarded early and we'll disembark late (9h), without ever leaving the ship (or just disembarking at Castaway Cay as we'll count Castaway Cay as an incentive of cruising with DCL). We'll spend 69 hours on the ship.

This means we paid more or less 10$/hour to be on the ship (and even more if we chose to disembark in Nassau). That movie "cost" us 20$ and while we are in the theater, we cannot enjoy the ship and/or other entertainment exclusive to DCL...

p.s.: A "dive-in" movie is a different experience.

So you pay more or less 10$ an hour to be on the ship (and even more if you chose to disembark in Nassau). That "free" movie just cost you 20$ and prevented you from enjoying the ship and/or entertainment exclusive to DCL...
You've already paid for the cruise; it's a sunk cost. So it doesn't really cost you $20 to go to the movie any more than it costs you $80 to sleep 8 hours at night. You've paid the same price whether you go to a movie, swim in a pool, or play trivia.

Just do what will be enjoyable for you and your family.

I don't think its weird to not want to, and it isn't weird to want to either. Just depends on how you want to spend your time. We like a variety of stuff - we don't really go to the stage shows (we've seen them now) and we don't spend hours at the pool either. If there isn't anything else going on and a movie we haven't seen yet is showing we'll see it. I suspect we'll watch the Mary Poppins movie this December on the ship and hey maybe even Ralph Breaks the Internet if its showing and the weathers cool/we aren't otherwise entertained. It's all good fun and we rarely go to movies at home so its kinda special in its own right.popcorn::

I’ve questioned this myself. As nice of an experience it might be to watch a movie on the ship, there are so many other activities that I could be doing instead of sitting in a dark theater. Even if it’s as simple as sitting on the deck, or my cabin balcony, watching the sunset, or the ship pulling into/out of port. And I know I would be thinking about it the entire time.

With two young children and limited babysitters we never get to go see grown up films in the cinema. We have to wait till they come on tv/on demand. So we were quite excited to be able to see black panther, infinity wars and solo on our recent cruise. I also watched pitch perfect 3 in the room whilst packing.
None of these would be available in my living room for a fair while. Was also nice to have a couple of dates to see two of the films (black panther was late at night so we had to go separately whilst kids slept).
