Rumor about “modified experiences” when Disney reopens (read 1st post for potential modifications being considered)

I had scheduled a surprise first trip for the kids for April break, which I then pushed to first week of September but it sounds like I need to throw in the towel and cancel based on these modified experiences. I completely respect and appreciate the rationale behind masks for everyone over age 3, no character meets, etc but I just can’t imagine a first disney trip with kids like this.

For a first disney trip with kids I'd reschedule. Even if masks are not required then, it is very unlikely not be "normal" by then.

I dont have any children yet, so I cant speak on behalf of parents. But I would assume the first Disney trip for children is an equally magical experience for both the parents and child(ren). I wouldnt want my hypothetical kids first trip to be anything less than what Disney has the potential of being. There will be certain things that will very likely stick around after this, but more than likely at a lesser scale than they will be when they first reopen for the first 6-12 months or so. Things that in 20 years you’ll forget wasnt always there. I‘Ve been to WDW at least once almost every year since 1988. I honestly don’t remember going to Disney without the metal detectors.

I honestly don’t remember going to Disney without the metal detectors.

I do and I remember going to disneyland when they were only certain people were pulled off for it.

My funny story on that is the year I went and did Dopey and got my 6 medals then the next weekend went to anaheim to do the first star wars and got 4 more medals. I wanted a nice pic of all my medals so I had only one around my neck and the other 9 stuffed into various pockets (they are heavy and with 9 it adds up) and as I went into DLR I got pulled aside for "secondary screening" and I just looked at the guy and said "this is going to take a minute" as I pulled medals out of all my pockets. I think it took two of the bowls to hold all of them...lol. Of course that would be the time I would be pulled over for for medal detector line.

It did all work out and I got an awesome pic in the end.

That’s awesome. And incredible feat, congrats. I’m too afraid to even commit to the Goofy let alone the Dopey.

I agree. Why not just replace coffee cups/glasses with disposable. At many of the Deluxe resorts, they have Keurigs. Why remove those? No coffee pot needed. K-cups are disposable, You can easily dispense into a disposable cup instead of ceramic.

I NEED my cup of coffee to function in the morning. I too would just bring a small Keurig and k-cup supply in my suitcase if these were permanently removed.
I need my coffee too bought a kettle on first trip 25 years ago took it back every time till we got owners lockers.
Don't know how we ever managed without them .

Also, while I always wear a mask whenever I go out, there’s just no way I can make the kids wear one all day, especially in the Florida heat. My 7yo barely tolerates a mask for 10 mins and my 4yo is even more oppositional, sigh. And while I do hear that the disposable surgical ones are more comfortable, I haven’t seen any that fit kids so they have cloth ones, which feel brutal after a while. I’m so so bummed. What was intended as a surprise “7th birthday” trip will I guess never happen. :(

I feel similar. While our August trip was going to be two of my kids' second trip it was going to be the first for two and six years in between trips. We initially scheduled for April then August and now I'm not sure but character meals was what we were most likely forward to with the trip. We're debating either February or waiting until 2022. I keep reminding myself that if we do end up waiting there are advantages of going with older kids.

Do they typically come out at certain times??
yes, usually in the morning before 8
Remember last week it was delayed and came out Wednesday, since the Disney owned stores don't open until the 27th, wednesday schedule would give the CM 7 days notice, which is what they usually get

Does anyone know if you can still walk to DS through the golf course at SSR
No. Per the email to pass holders only entrances to DS are Orange and Lime Garages, ride share drop off, and bridge to the non-Disney hotels. Since Saratoga is closed they’re not going to want anyone parking there or walking over there either through the marketplace side or the west side walking trail.

Can there be a surprise first trip/ 8th Birthday trip instead? We're scheduled for an anniversary trip this year, but we've booked a back-up trip for next year in case. It's not going to be a milestone anniversary anymore, but it can still celebrate it, or, as my son said, it can hopefully just be a "Hey, things are more normal again!" trip instead. ;)

His birthday is in April and I’m not sure if that will still be too soon? It’s so odd to be stuck in this endless present! Also NYC school district has frustratingly not yet released the 2020-21 holidays school calendar so not 100% sure when school breaks are. Sigh. I was wondering if i should cancel and plan two shorter trips versus one 8 day trip like I’m planning now...

A friend of mine just reached out, she is a FT at Co-Op she has been called back to go the 24th with the opening on the 27th
She tells me, at least the DS CM, will not see a regular HUB schedule for now, instead they will all be required to report to work at a set time (in my friends case the 24th) . And then schedules will be setup for the first week without regard to preferences, just based on need. Then the next week it will be by seniority/preference. They are reaching out to call back cast by phone or email. With 5 days notice. If they can't get in touch with the cast that way then by certified letter with a recall date 10 days from mailing the letter.
Again this is just for DS as to Theme Parks and resorts CM have not been called or contacted by the union at all

Sooo, about the coffee maker :D - the coffee might not have been the greatest, but it was free.

Rather than buying coffee every morning, if we purchase a refillable mug, can you use it for coffee? We would be there 9 nights. Not sure of cost of mugs, but if we drank two cup a day at hotel, if coffee free, should make mug purchase worth it?

Also, do we see this as something permanent?

Hmm I wonder if they'll do a coffee area somewhere with (social distanced) lines where a CM can fill a mug of coffee for you in the lobby or something considering the lack of in-room machines?

I don't know how much coffee is at WDW because we never purchased, we just drank in room in the morning and later afternoon.

Say it's $2.50 a cup - for us $5.00 each a day. $10 for 9 days would be $90 just for coffee!!!

I didnt specify this, but I meant for free from a large brewed pot rather than making you pay for that. Apologies for not being clear! Still waking up :teeth:
