Disneyland Reopening Speculation Superthread

As for my December trip happening, I’m not feeling so optimistic and a bit more devastated about the likelihood of getting to go. But we haven’t thrown the towel in yet. In a normal world, we would have been booking our dining today.

But if anyone needs me, I’ll be lurking on the WDW planning boards today...😬

Interesting. Well it looks like everyone lost this game of chicken. DL tried to pressure the state through it’s PR blitz, the state threw its hands up and said fine here’s some guidance, and then everyone got mad and retreated to their corners. I’m going to predict that no guidelines will be forthcoming for at least two more weeks and that DL will not continue to push for them, at least publicly. Everyone has some wound licking to do first ☹

I think Newsome will go ahead and announce his guidance. Its apparent that what Disney thinks is safe is very different than what the California government thinks is safe.
I wonder if Bob Iger quit the task force so he could come out and announce what the parks had offered and considered deal breakers...Should Gavin do this.
Speculating on what would be deal-breakers;
  • County has to be in yellow, or remain in any particular color for that matter. Just like in FL, once the parks are open and there is no spread, why should they have to close?
  • All outdoor activities only. That may work for Six Flags or Legoland, but certainly not Disney - almost everything has at least an inside line
  • Locals only restriction
  • Onerous contact tracing (though Disney is clearly on-board with park reservations)
At least they really are talking....now. They clearly weren't - that's a bit maddening. As someone who has visited WDW, I am really disappointed that Newsom won't take the lessons the parks learned in FL and apply them here. IT WORKS for God's sake! We are in a pandemic with a desperate need to get everyone back working again - and you aren't going to take the advice of a group that has found a solution? Why not?!? The silence in this respect is deafening.

Are they talking though? I hope so, but the proof will be in the pudding. It seems just as likely that with Iger off the task force, they’re farther apart than ever.

I have a feeling Iger will talk to him one way or the other. Either in person or through a lawyer. At this point I'm assuming Disney wants to get things rolling on the fast track now. No more dilly dally. Let's get this going.

This is what I think has happened. Disney knew the plans and put on the pressure to release guidance and said help us open. Governor Newsom throws up his hands and says ok, I'll release it, but you are probably not going to like the guidelines. Disney and the other theme parks look at what is about to be released (as I am sure they are provided them before they go public) and say this is not what we want and please hold off on releasing and let's negotiate more. I think the state and the theme parks are probably pretty far apart still and this will still take more time.

I don’t know if anyone else read through the Tweet thread but this was also included:

"Given the size and operational complexities of these unique sectors, we are seeking additional input from health, workforce and business stakeholders to finalize this important framework -- all leading with science and safety," Ghaly said.

Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s Health and Human Services secretary, had said crafting rules for a safe reopening of Disneyland and other amusement parks is extreme complex. Along with lines and rides, people gather in restaurants and hotels, come from all over and stay for days.“

With the exception of the rides, people are already doing this in DTD and in the DLR area hotels that are open. And, as far as I know, there hasn't been a large outbreak among guests or CMs. The rigid safety protocols appear to be working.

But hotels are allowed to be open, as are restaurants. They are all following their respective guidelines. The theme parks need to be treated as separate entities. You can't hold the theme parks responsible for what goes on in neighboring hotels and restaurants. Those industries are responsible for following their guidelines.

Theme park guidelines need to be based SOLELY on what goes on inside the gates of those locations. It isn't fair to bring in other business sectors as factors that influence the guidance for one specific sector. That is not being done with any other sectors guidelines, to my knowledge.

And Disney has already worked out the "lines and rides" portion, so what is left?

It's strange that after 4 months Dr. ghaly states that the administrative will seek more input as if there's confusion about what CAPA wants. The issues are with the yellow tier and travel requirement, full stop. If this administration is not willing to negotiate on that, then they should say it, anything else is truly a waste of time and disingenuous at best.

What are we thinking for the actual guidance to come out? Days? Weeks?
4 more months of "soon", " very soon", "very close", and " we are working closely together". 2021 is Newsom's goal I think, but it's strange that he's uncomfortable with sharing that and his reasons why because if he's afraid to hurt DLR and/or Anaheim, either way that's what's going to happen with that stance.
