Moonlight Magic AK

This hurricane really sucks. Ak was going to be our first mm event

this will also be our first time at Disney during a hurricane. under what circumstances will they shut down the parks?

I know outdoor rides won’t run but what about the parks themselves, what kind of weather will it take for Disney to shut them down entirely?

If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area—or for your place of residence—within 7 days of your scheduled arrival date, you may call in advance to reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort hotel packages and most room only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney.

I do think if the forecast remains mm gets canceled
Yep, wet indeed. Just switched all our suitcases out for athletic wear and tevas. Packed the ponchos and waterproof backpack. We fly out tomorrow and back next Saturday, it will be interesting to say the least!
EDIT to add: I’m a coastal NC resident so this is nothing new to us….it may be the safer option considering the storm could decided to run up the coast and beat me home.
It's been crazy wet here the last couple of weeks. Just hope they don't have to close the parks.

Tonight's news is suggesting it'll hit central FL at 8 pm on Wednesday as a category 2. But it's still early, right? Maybe it'll be gone by then! Then again, they're showing me "Hurricane Survival Guides" and places to flll sandbags. :-(

They usually don't close the parks unless it's actually a hurricane. This isn't looking good, but you never know. Storm track predictions change. New tracks will start coming out daily at 5 am and 5 pm eastern time.

Still too early to say how this plays out but latest gfs models have Ian hitting north west Florida vs Tampa. Euro models updates in an hour

the trends are what matter this far out and the trends do point to a westward movement, keeping my fingers and toes crossed on this one to follow the gfs models

I went ahead and cancelled our trip this week. A DVC reservation popped up for the same resort at the end of October so I grabbed it. Just couldn’t pass up that opportunity. I will definitely miss MM if they are still able to have it. I had never attended one. Good luck to all of you who have reservations!!!

So disappointed we'll be missing this! We had a reservation for our first MM event on Wed. Based on the forecast, I just cancelled our DVC stay that was supposed to begin on 9/28. The silver lining is that all points were returned to our account to be used normally.

I’m a bit surprised so many people are cancelling, seen a ton on Facebook. It’s Going to be wet but forecasts are looking up and up for the worst to hit elsewhere so it’s more a rain event than anything. The positive being a likely empty park

but what I guess surprises me the most are the cancellations before we have a solid understanding of the track. If I were to cancel I’d wait to get a bit more confidence on where this goes, assuming travel dates permitted waiting of course

From what I've seen today it's expected to hit the gulf coast. You might dodge the bullet.

Getting better, wed night might be a bridge too far but getting better

hopefully next 48 hours Ian pushes to the west even more

It is a shame that you can't transfer the tickets just in case someone is there and storm does not hit.

I cancelled because I was able to easily rebook for later in the month. I realize we don't have all the data, but even if it tracks more west, Orlando is going to be a rain event, like you said. I don't want a rainy vacation! Our vacation was going to be a very short one, and the forecast shows it will rain almost every day we would have been there. I also don't want to try driving into Disney in pouring rain.

Smart idea.

Does anyone think that if they have to cancel the MM event that it will get rescheduled? I’d say probably not because of having to open the registration again. That would probably be a nightmare. But I was just curious. Has this ever happened before?

Unless the parks are closed I’d expect mm to go on. The further west Ian goes the less likely Disney shuts down any parks. If he maintains course as projected right now, I’d say no park shutdown

but we will know for sure in a few days how this plays out

We already cancelled 2 nights at Vero Beach. We’re leaning towards cancelling 3 nights at Boardwalk, including one for MM.

Our next trip is 4 nights at VGF at the end of November. We’ve stayed at Vero Beach and Boardwalk many times, so not a big deal for us.

But I feel so bad for those once-a-year DVC members. :(
